Dear Friends, Fall always brings with it the opportunity for the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur Tri-Province Development Office to express in a public way our enormous gratitude to the many generous donors who have contributed to our life and mission during our fiscal year 2019–2020. You are numerous and so many have given year after year. Where would we be without you! Not only in good times do we benefit from your generosity; in the challenging months we have just lived through (and continue to live in) your financial support has not lessened. May Christ’s words describe the rewards of your giving. “Give, and there will be gifts for you: a full measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be poured into your lap.” (Luke 6:38) It has been so very heartening to know that we continue to have your material and spiritual support as we live through many losses. Within the course of a month four Sisters have died, three of them within seven days, two of whom were still very active members of the community. (None died from COVID-19.) It is hard to take it all in. We have to believe that, just as the falling leaves of this season make it possible for new buds to appear in spring, so the deaths of these Sisters will lead to new life, not only for them, but for all whose lives have been touched by them. You will read about them in this issue of ENDeavor. From the many requests we receive from you through the Mass and Prayer Card program, we know that you, too, have many losses to grieve. Be assured that the Sisters include your intentions in our prayers daily. Again, thank you for being partners with us in our mission of bringing the news of God’s goodness to all, especially to those who are poor and marginalized in our society today. Dear Friends,
Fall always brings with it the opportunity for the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur Tri-Province Development Office to express in a public way our enormous gratitude to the many generous donors who have contributed to our life and mission during our fiscal year 2019–2020. You are numerous and so many have given year after year. Where would we be without you!
Not only in good times do we benefit from your generosity; in the challenging months we have just lived through (and continue to live in) your financial support has not lessened. May Christ’s words describe the rewards of your giving.
“Give, and there will be gifts for you: a full measure, pressed down,
shaken together, and running over will be poured into your lap.” (Luke 6:38)
It has been so very heartening to know that we continue to have your material and spiritual support as we live through many losses.

The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur wish to express our gratitude to all those who are listed in the following pages as donors to the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur from September 1, 2019, through August 31, 2020. Your friendship and generosity mean so much to us.
Every gift has a positive impact on the life of our Sisters. You are supporting our Sisters in underfunded and unfunded ministries, as well as those whose ministry, after many years in active ministry, is now one of prayer. You are providing the support needed so that the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur may continue to follow and validate St. Julie Billiart’s Mission.
Now, more than ever, the Sisters need your ongoing financial assistance. A gift of any size will be used to support and sustain our Sisters as they carry out their many ministries.

NEW ADDRESS
Sr. Seton Cunneen, SNDdeN
Sr. Ann Gormly, SNDdeN
Sr. Maura Prendergast, SNDdeN
Mt. Notre Dame Health Center 699 E. Columbia Avenue Cincinnati, OH 45215
On September 1, over four hundred Notre Dame Mission Volunteers started their journeys of service in the midst of a global pandemic and unprecedented time. During this year, they will be challenged to meet growing needs in creative ways to ensure the health and safety of their students and communities. This will be a year of service unlike any other, and we are accepting the unknowns as an opportunity to shift our view of service.
Meaningful connections are occurring through virtual platforms in an array of ways: members are facilitating e-learning and providing tech support, and teams are collaborating at their biweekly training meetings. The virtual space is creating opportunities for our members across the country to meet and establish relationships that will carry them through the year.
We are grateful for their service and ask you to keep our members in your prayers as they are challenged to stretch their hearts as wide as the world. Follow Notre Dame Mission Volunteers on social media to stay updated on how our members are continuing to get things done!

12 Honor Roll 2020
Joan Susan Kerrigan, daughter of James and Susan Kerrigan, was born in Chester, Pa. One of three girls in the family, she enjoyed the friendship of her sisters, Marie and Eleanor. It was at Notre Dame High School, Moylan, Pa. that Joan met the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. Like many other Moylan graduates, she entered the community at Ilchester, Md. in August of 1951. Following her years of formation, Joan found herself in the classroom at St. Ursula School in 1954. Although she acknowledged her first year of teaching to have been “quite a challenge” (she had 75 third-graders!), she accentuated the positive: “I learned a great deal during that year!”For the next 30 years, Sister Joan served in schools in Washington, D.C. and Maryland. At Our Lady of Perpetual Help and Trinity School, Ilchester, as well as at St. Jerome School, she was a teacher. Joan then served as principal at St. Jerome, St. Philip Neri, Little Flower and St. Francis Xavier, and as Assistant Principal at the Academy of Notre Dame, K Street. During those years Joan completed her B.S. from Trinity College, Washington, D.C. in 1964 and an M.S. from Fordham University (Educational Administration & Supervision) in 1971.The 1980s found Joan as a “teacher of teachers,” first as an instructor in Education at Trinity College and then at Egoji Teacher Training College in Kenya. After completing
an M.A.T. at Trinity College (Education & Computer) in 1995, Joan helped found the Notre Dame Education Center in D.C. to teach basic skills (reading, ESL and computer) and help adults without a high-school diploma secure their GED certificates. From 1995 to 2011 Joan taught and then served as co-director at the Center. Before founding the Education Center, this very able administrator was of great service to her community as well. For three years she served as Director of Educational Ministries for the then Maryland Province and later as a member of the Province Leadership Team for six years.A community member described Joan as a person “comfortable in her own skin,” who seemed to have an abiding sense that “everything is O.K.”—or at least “getting to be O.K.” The presence and peace of the Lord seems to have been a strong part of her life. It anchored her through her many years of fruitful ministry, and was evident in her kindliness, empathy and sense of humor when the going got rough. In 2013, Joan retired to Villa Julie Residence, where she continued to serve the community and the ministry of prayer. In August, as she came to understand that she was dying, Joan was peaceful and unafraid of death. She slept her way into heaven while one of her favorite hymns played: Precious Lord, Take My Hand. She is sorely missed.

13 Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur
Sister Shawn Marie—Molly, as her family called her—was born in Philadelphia, the oldest of five children. Her brother Patrick noted: “The family always looked to Marie. She was bright; she looked out for others’ welfare, for ways to make things better for everyone.” These qualities were manifested throughout Sister Shawn’s life. Shawn Marie met the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur at West Catholic High School. “Sisters William Marie (Pat Murray) and Mary Augusta exhibited a simplicity, joy and commitment to their students that I had not experienced before,” she said. In the summer of 1957 she entered the community at Ilchester, Md. After completing her studies at Trinity College, Shawn taught for almost 20 years in elementary schools in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Pennsylvania. During this time she received an M.S. in Language Arts from Temple University and an M.Ed. from Loyola University Maryland. For the next 31 years, Shawn served at Maryvale Preparatory School, first as Assistant Principal and Teacher and then as Head of School. During her tenure much was done to update buildings and construct new ones; to increase technology capabilities; and to increase enrollment to capacity.
In a letter to the entire Maryvale community, President Tracey Ford spoke of Sister’s legendary impact on people. “A consummate letter writer, she spent countless hours each day sending notes of encouragement to students, alumnae, their families and her colleagues. She was unequivocally a ‘people person’ with a twinkle in her eye and a deep faith.”Throughout her years as a Sister of Notre Dame, Shawn contributed her time and talents to the many internal needs of the community, especially with regard to matters educational. Even in retirement, she served on the Boards of Trustees for Trinity School in Ellicott City, Md. and Notre Dame Academy in Villanova, Pa. Readers of ENDeavor will recall her many years assisting in the production of this publication. In early 2018 Sister Shawn Marie suffered a major stroke and spent her remaining time at Stella Maris Nursing Facility in Maryland, unable to talk or walk … such difficult impediments for a “people person” like herself. Jesus’ action toward the woman bent over as recorded in Luke 13 seems a fitting image of Shawn’s passing to new life: “He touched her, and instantly she could stand straight. And we can imagine that, with her tongue now free, “… she praised and thanked God!” We thank God for her life among us.

14 Honor Roll 2020
Sister Rosemary Donohue, SNDdeN (formerly Sister John Margaret)
May 1, 1942 – September 21, 2020
Born in Upper Darby, Pa. to Geraldine and John Donohue, Rosemary enjoyed family life with her brother, John, and sister, Peggy. Rosemary first met the Sisters of Notre Dame as a student at Saint Bernadette School in Drexel Hill, Pa. and again at Archbishop Prendergast High School. She wrote at the time of her 50th anniversary, “In my desire to respond to … God’s call to me to become a religious, it became clear that I was bound for the SNDdeN.” Sister Rosemary entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur at Ilchester, Md. on August 14, 1960. After graduating from Trinity College in 1965, Rosemary was launched into what became a lifetime of ministry in Catholic Education. While teaching at SS. Joachim and Anne School in Queens Village, N.Y. and at Trinity School in Ilchester, Rosemary earned an M.A. in Educational Administration from the University of Virginia, and in 1972 she began 16 years as Principal at St. Albert the Great School in Huntingdon Valley, Pa. In 1992, Rosemary completed a doctoral program in Educational Administration and Supervision at Boston College and after a year as Assistant Superintendent of Schools in the Miami diocese, Rosemary was hired as Superintendent of Maine Catholic Schools.Since the Diocese of Portland includes the entire State of Maine, Rosemary’s work took her near and far. During the next 21 years, Sr. Rosemary developed and implemented a Maine state-mandated certification support system for
all Maine Catholic School teachers and administrators. As merging of schools became a necessity, she presided over several such mergers. Sr. Rosemary served on numerous diocesan, regional and national boards and committees. She appreciated the opportunity to daily continue Julie’s work of bringing God’s goodness to all whom she met. In 2014, Sr. Rosemary left her beloved Maine and moved to the Baltimore, Md. area. Soon after, she became Supervisor of Graduate Interns in the School of Education at Notre Dame of Maryland University. This lifelong educator supervised “Teachers-in-Training.” At the same time, Sr. Rosemary served on several Boards of Trustees. Trinity School in Ellicott City, Maryvale Preparatory School in Lutherville, and Sisters Academy in Lansdowne all benefitted from her wisdom and years of experience in Catholic education. She was also an active, contributing member in the Ohio Province; her gifts and talents were greatly appreciated and will be sorely missed. On September 6, the community at Villa Julie celebrated with Rosemary her 60th Jubilee. Rosemary rejoiced in “My 60 years with the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur [which] have been replete with blessings, challenges and surprises.”After overcoming cancer several times during the years, Sister Rosemary succumbed on September 21, 2020, at Villa Julie Residence. Rosemary has been a blessing, a challenge and a wonderfully compassionate Sister among us. We give thanks for her life.

The daughter of Charles and Katherine Hendren, both from Scotland, Helen was born in Brooklyn, New York as was her brother, James. On the occasion of her 50th Jubilee, Sister Catherine Charles wrote: “How Good Is the Good God was a familiar saying during my childhood. My mother was taught by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in Glasgow, Scotland. These Sisters taught me in St. Catherine of Genoa, Brooklyn, N.Y. Because of their example, kindness and faith, I felt called to Notre Dame after high school.” She entered at Ilchester, Md. on August 14, 1955.From 1958 until 1976 Sister Catherine Charles taught in grammar schools in Ridgewood, N.Y., Drexel Hill, Pa., Linthicum, Md., Baltimore, Md., and Queens Village, N.Y. During that time, she obtained an M.S. from City University of New York in Adolescent Child Development. And her ministries took a new turn. The next 44 years found her in the Diocese of Wilmington, Delaware, where she served in Youth Ministry for several years and as a theology teacher to juniors and seniors for 13 years at St. Mark High School. During six of those years, Sister Catherine Charles worked in a summer camp for 100 children suffering from spina bifida and cerebral palsy. Her introduction to computers began in 1989 when she worked in a data entry position at Cathedral Cemetery in Wilmington for almost a decade.
Almost 20 years ago, in 2001, Sister Catherine Charles became Director of Religious Education at what was then a new parish, St. Margaret of Scotland, in Newark, Delaware. Beginning with 100 students, the program soon grew, at one point serving 700 children from grades K through 8th grade. In 2013 she was invited to be the Pastoral Associate. The year 2013 was also the year she developed cancer. But this didn’t keep her down! Six years later she was still cancer free and said, “The Good God has been good.” In addition to visiting ill parishioners in hospitals and at home, Sister Catherine began a “Lazarus” group which planned luncheons and helped with any needed arrangements for funerals. She spearheaded many other activities which keep a parish family connected. She wrote:
“The years here at St. Margaret of Scotland have given me much joy. The people have become my family and are always willing to share. Many of the parishioners are my past students from St. Mark High School. ‘God is good’ has been my motto in all that I do.”
When asked if she ever planned to retire, Sister Catherine Charles said not a word about retiring: “With the help of God and Julie I hope to continue ministry here at St. Margaret’s.” It seems that God had other plans for this unique and devoted Sister of Notre Dame de Namur! She will be missed.
