Introduction

• Gandhidham is a city and a municipality in the Kachchh District of Gujarat state of India

• The town was created in the early 1950s for the resettlement of the refugees from Sindh of Pakistan in the aftermath of the partition of India

• In recent history Gandhidham is a fast developing city in Gujarat state

History

• Maharaja of Kutch on advice of Gandhiji, gave 15000 acres of land to Bhai Pratap, who founded Sindhu Resettlement Corporation to rehabilitate Sindhi Hindus uprooted from their motherland

• The foundation stone of town was laid with blessings of Mahatma Gandhi and hence town was named Gandhidham

• Main objective of the corporation was to assist in the rehousing of displaced persons by the construction of new town on a site few miles inland from location selected by Government of India for new port of Kandla on the Gulf of Kachchh

Overview of earthquake

• A severe Earthquake of the magnitude of 6.9 at Richter scale occurred at 8.46 A.M. on 26th January 2001

• The earthquake devastated the district of Kutch in the northwestern part of the state, and many other districts of the state also suffered terrible human and property losses

Impact of earthquake

• Its impact has been felt in various parts of the Country• The total number of injured is reported to be 1,66,000 out

of which around 20,000 persons are seriously injured. The number of people still missing is 233 in Kutch

• The earthquake most seriously affected the Kandla port, the busiest port in India, which caters to the hinterland of western, central and northern India

• The workers have migrated from Kandla due to fear of earthquake

Development after earthquake

• Education:- Gandhidham has several schools providing high school education

• Business:- Most of the business depends on shipping, but after the tax incentives incorporated after the 2001 earthquake, many corporations and industries have moved in

• Transportation:- Gandhidham is connected by road and rail with rest of India Gandhinagar, Mumbai, Pune, Calcutta, Ahmedabad, Indore, Bangalore, Jaipur, and Delhi

Conclusion

• The earthquake in January 2001 has been a blessing in disguise and the blessing calamity has been forwarded to the massive development aid

• After earthquake there is number of development in many areas such as education, transport and business sector also developed in Gandhidham
