A Pre-Visit Social Narrative for Sensory Friendly Nights

I am visiting the Greensboro Science Center! This story will tell me what I can see and do when I visit.

First, I will stand in line and be patient while we get our tickets. Next, I will choose what I want to see and do while we are here.

In the evening, the Zoo is closed and the animals are resting, but the

museum and aquarium are open.

A map of the museum and aquarium shows me different directions to take and marks restrooms, water fountains, Take A Break spaces, and

more.

I can visit the Aquarium to see animals like penguins, sharks, otters, fish, and more! I will not tap on the glass because it can disturb the

animals.

I can also pet a stingray at the open Touch Pool if I want to. The stingrays won’t hurt me (their tail barbs are clipped off). I will follow

directions and only touch them gently with two fingers.

On my way to SciPlay Bay, I will be able to watch the pendulum swing. We will pass by the Gift Shop and Café, but they are only open during

daytime hours.

In SciPlay Bay, I can play on a boat or in a submarine. I can also build with blocks, play with toys, or build a fort with pool noodles and

blankets.

Flying Colors is a fun tube that can shoot out balls. It is a little noisy and I may have to wait my turn. The yellow submarine has fun blinking lights

and buttons that can make loud sounds.

Octavia the Octopus has drums that play funny sounds. They can be a little loud.

I can watch a show in the OmniSphere. It will be very dark in there, and sometimes loud. I can leave during the show if I need to, but if I leave I

won’t be able to go back in. This is to keep myself and others safe.

In Prehistoric Passages, I can see dinosaurs. I can watch screens and read signs to learn about dinosaurs, fossils, and more!

I will hear a lot of different sounds, but none of the dinosaurs move.

In the Extreme Weather Gallery, I can learn about lightning, snowstorms, tornados, and other extreme weather.

If I put my hand into the box to feel hurricane winds, it will also be loud.

Sometimes there are Temporary Exhibits that are here for a short time that I will not see at every visit. Until May 17th, 2020, the special exhibit is Hands-On Harley Davidson! Here, I can learn about physics with golf

balls and ramps in the Engineering Lab. I can also learn how motorcycles work, and pretend to ride one myself in the Harley

Davidson dealership!

If I want to learn about propulsion, I can launch golf balls into a big metal sphere! The golf ball launchers can be a little loud, though.

Downstairs, I can see reptiles and amphibians! Snakes, lizards, frogs, and turtles are here.

Sometimes a volunteer will be in the Herp Lab, but if it isn’t open when I am here, I can still see the animals through the window.

It may seem very loud in some parts of the Greensboro Science Center. It may also be very dark, very bright, or there might be strong smells.

There will be quiet places in the museum where I can take a break if I need to. There will also be places where I can play a game, or a place for

my grownup to take care of me if I need it.

In some areas of the museum, I may need to wait my turn to do an activity or see an animal.

I will have a lot of fun, and learn at the Greensboro Science Center! While I am there, I will remember these rules:

I will stay with my grownup.

I will take turns with other children. I will not run and shout.

I will clean up after myself if I make a mess. I will be kind to the animals and to other people.

If I get lost, it is safe to talk to an adult who works at the Greensboro

Science Center. They will have name tags or shirts that have the Greensboro Science Center logo.
