Until the year 1054 for all intents and purposes there was only one organized church. In that year a split occurred between Christians in the eastern and western parts of what had been the Roman Empire. The split involved not only differences of opinion over some theological questions but also a power struggle and politics. Those in the east became known as

Thus today we have Anglicans, Baptists, Lutherans, Pentecostals, Presbyterians and many other kinds of Protestants. Today, on Reformation Sunday, we celebrate the good things which are part of our heritage as Protestant Christians. But we also pray for greater unity and understanding among all other Christians that is, all those who have repented of sin and confess Jesus as Lord.
