Reaching for the Stars Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men’s blood. Make big plans, aim high in hope and work.

—Daniel H. Burnham, U.S. architect & city planner (1846–1912)

There’s a difference of opinion about the benefits of big. Some say bigger isn’t better; some say too much is never enough. But there’s an undeniable benefit to reaching for the stars when undertak-

ing an action: the possibility of achieving one’s wildest dreams.Trendwest was definitely thinking big when they developed WorldMark’s

newest Southern California resort at Indio. Phase I alone of this massive vaca-tion complex—which began welcoming owners in July—contains 270 units. Upon completion of Phase II (anticipated in fall 2007), WorldMark Indio will boast a total of 436 units in 14 buildings in a dramatically landscaped setting covering nearly 28 acres. Our art director, Chris Bulloch, treats you to a picto-rial of this magnificent newcomer; turn to page 18.

WorldMark San Diego may not be large in size, but it is colossal in terms of value due to its proximity to dozens of the attractions that this California coastal city is known for. Start on page 10 for your armchair tour of our newest urban resort and its surroundings.

WorldMark owners who stay deeply engaged in the workings of their club are certainly big thinkers and proactive club members. October is the month for the Annual Owners Meeting, and we’d like to thank all attendees in advance—and salute the owners running for the open positions on the WorldMark Board of Directors—for their time, ener-gy, and attention. Turn to page 8 for a meeting reminder and a quick primer on the three ways you can vote in this year’s election.

Trendwest reached for the stars when it developed WorldMark, The Club, and succeeded in creating the best vacation ownership company with the high-est owner satisfaction rate in the industry. Now, with Wyndham Worldwide as our parent company, we are also the biggest—but it’s the smart kind of big. The kind that knows hotels, timeshare, and the world of hospitality inside and out. You are our stars, and we’ll keep reaching to find new and better ways to make your life shine through an array of unforgettable vacation experiences.

CorrectionIn the August 2006 issue of Destinations, Missouri’s Table Rock Lake was inadvertently referred to as Table Top Lake in our feature story, “Branson Burn-ing Bright.” Our attentive and passionate Midwest readers were quick to alert us of our gaffe. We sincerely apologize for this error.

Guest memberships to Thousand Trails—one of the largest and most successful private RV camping clubs in the country—are now avail-

“Trendwest is thrilled to be offering our WorldMark RV-ers a chance to use their credits for yet another type of exciting vacation experience,” says Peggy Fry, Vice President of WorldMark Owner Services. “Like WorldMark, Thousand Trails offers maximum flexibility. At WorldMark San Diego, everything’s waiting for you—a

rooftop terrace, handy transit system, world-famous sights,

and eternal sunshine. By Katie Showalter

10 DESTINATIONS | October 2006

Focus on WorldMark San Diego

San Diego has all the trappings you’d expect of a vibrant city: high-rises, pedestrians at every hour, hustle-bustle, diverse venues, sporting events, lively nightlife, fi ne dining, corner cafes, and top-notch cultural off erings. Yet, with excellent weather, 70 miles of beaches, a recreation-minded populace, a large bay, and the ocean beyond, San Diego is also an outdoor destination. Whether your thing is sunbathing, boating, scuba diving, bicycling, or simply get-ting doused in the front row of a Shamu show at the marine park, you’ll be able to do it year-round here.

WorldMark is here, too, with your newest urban resort. Th e red-bricked WorldMark San Diego opened in June and rises fi ve stories on the edge of downtown. It is within easy access of public transportation, highways, and all that indoor and out-door San Diego has to off er—you’ll be where the action is.

WM San Diego provides studios and one-bedrooms. Amenities include DVD/CD players, kitchenettes (with two-burner stoves, refrigerators, and microwaves), a busi-ness center with high-speed Internet access, exercise room, game room, and self-serve laundry. Th e geometric shapes

and bold lines characteristic of art deco style grace the lobby and other interior public areas. A rooftop terrace lined with potted fl owers is ideal for taking in city and bay views. Sit at one of several tables situated underneath the pergolas. Hang out, sip a drink, munch a snack, or enjoy conversation with friends and family. Future plans include a rooftop hot tub.

Another unique WorldMark amenity: You get to bed down in a bit of history. Th e red-brick building began its life as the Riviera Apartments in 1928. Th e city of San Diego designated the building as a historical site in 2001 for its Italian Renaissance Revival architecture, and the fame of its architect, Henry Harms Preibisius, who also built an 11-story luxury hotel downtown in 1912. Th e Riviera eventually incarnated as the eHotel, so named be-cause it off ered unlimited Internet access to guests back when the Web was still new. Th e building sold again, and after a nearly year-long remodel, it opened as the Stay-bridge Suites in 2004. Two years later, in nearly turnkey condition, it was purchased by Trendwest and began its life as a WorldMark resort.

Th e last owners chose the art deco interior; a favorite painting inspired the bright, geometric carpet design. Local artists created the carved-glass entrance doors, as well as the lobby’s stained-glass scene depicting Balboa Park. World-Mark front desk manager Cara Godfrey enjoys the art: “It brings up conversation for owners and front desk staff .”

Yet perhaps WM San Diego’s best amenity is its location. All that downtown off ers is at your fi ngertips. World-class attractions are minutes away, and the beaches are calling for you. Frankly, as striking as this elegant building is, you prob-ably won’t be spending much time in it.

If you don’t drive

“Our local transit system, especially in downtown San Diego, is phenomenal,” says Cara, a 20-year resident. Bus, trolley, ferry,

or your feet will get you to every destination on this list. From the resort, several bus stops are within a half-block, and the trolley stop is only 2 short city blocks—one-tenth of a mile—away.

• Cara’s first suggestion is Horton Plaza, “a shopping mall that’s set up for tourists,” she says. The brightly painted multi-level mall with open-air pedestrian walkways of-fers well-known shops and department stores. Walk about a mile or take the trolley to the Civic Center stop.

• Adjacent to Horton Plaza is the Gaslamp Quarter, a 16.5-block historic district named for the lamps that used to line its streets. Formerly San Diego’s red-light district, the neighborhood is still lively at night with dozens of restaurants, bars, and nightclubs. Enjoy lunch or din-ner, attend performances, play a few rounds of pool, hang

• “I send people down to the waterfront if they ask for seafood restaurants or want a different kind of shopping ex-perience, because there’s Seaport Village, another popular spot,” Cara says. With clusters of shops located along side-walks, and with restaurants, a gazebo, fountain, and grassy areas, Seaport Village does indeed feel like a village, albeit one crowded with visitors. Many of the shops specialize in one item or niche, such as kites, surf wear, hats, salsa, music boxes, seashells, sunglasses, or toys. You’ll also see plenty of

A Cinderella view of the cityMichelle Abbott and her family began their vacation with four

nights at Oceanside. “It’s a beautiful location, right on the beach,”

Michelle says. They went to Disneyland and visited her grand-

mother. “We went out to eat a lot because I don’t cook on vaca-

tion,” she smiles.

Since arriving two evenings ago in San Diego, they’ve been to

Seaport Village, a cluster of shops and restaurants located along

the waterfront. “My daughter Zoe loved the Cinderella carriages.”

These pumpkin-shaped, horse-drawn coaches provide rides through-

out the shopping village and in nearby downtown areas.

“We just hung out and relaxed; we kept it to things kids could

do,” Michelle says. Her daughters Naomi and Zoe are one and

three years old, respectively. After checking out of WM San Diego

at noon, they are heading for SeaWorld.

From one owner to another: “I love this resort,” Michelle

says. “The rooms are not as well-appointed, but it is by far made

up for with location.” And it’s not an overly congested part of

town, she notes.

places to grab a sweet snack or a meal. Take the orange trol-ley line approximately 1.5 miles to the Seaport Village stop.

• Along the harbor at Navy Pier, 1.5 miles from your resort, is the Midway, an aircraft carrier that was transformed into a museum in 2004. When this ship was commissioned in 1945, it was the largest in the world. Check out restored aircraft and visit the hangar deck, flight deck, and captain’s bridge; hear stories from docents, many of whom are Midway veterans. Take the orange trolley line to the America Plaza stop.

• Cara likes to recommend taking the ferry to Coronado, a narrow peninsula full of pricey real estate that juts from the mainland south of San Diego and nearly encircles San Diego Bay. The famous Hotel del Coronado, a grand dame of a re-sort (where Marilyn Monroe once frolicked in “Some Like It Hot”), sits along beautiful Coronado Municipal Beach. Take a stroll through the historic hotel (built in 1888), window-shop its expensive boutiques, and enjoy the view from its Pacific Ocean-facing decks. Spend a few relax-ing hours at the beach. To get to Coronado from the resort, take the trolley to the America Plaza stop, walk to the Broadway Pier along the harbor, and hop aboard a ferry (leaving every hour on the hour).

• Merely a mile away from WM San Diego is one of the city’s star attractions, the San Diego Zoo. Ninety years old this year, the exceptional zoo houses giant pandas, Caribbean flamingos, polar bears, clouded leopards, pygmy hippos, and 4,000 more rare and endangered animals. In addition to the fauna, the zoo’s botanical garden holds 700,000 exotic plants; some of them, such as eucalyptus and bamboo, are used as dietary supplements for the animals. Walk or take the No. 7 bus to the north end of Balboa Park.

If you do drive

As in most urban environments, parking comes at a premium. Valet parking is available at WM San Diego

for $23 per night. You’ll find parking places around town, but you’ll need to pay for most of them. Some spots, such as Horton Plaza and Seaport Village, offer validated parking if you make a purchase.

• Thomas’s first recommendation for drivers? “The beach-es,” says this San Diego native, without hesitation. Places such as La Jolla are out of range when taking public transportation, he says, because it would take a few hours to get there. In La Jolla, you will find La Jolla Shores and La Jolla Cove for swim-ming, snorkeling, and scuba diving. Seals and sea lions are often spotted in a protected area oddly called the Children’s Pool. Shopping and dining are also enjoyable in this upscale,

scenic area 15 miles northwest of downtown San Diego. • Torrey Pines State Reserve, 18 miles from WM San Di-

ego, protects the rare Torrey pine. The tree grows only in the reserve, favoring its sandstone bluffs, and on Santa Rosa Is-land near Santa Barbara. Hikers and birdwatchers can choose from several hiking trails (all less than 1.5 miles) with views of wind-gnarled pines, the ocean, and a lagoon that’s home to three rare birds. Bring drinking water. You can access Tor-rey Pines State Beach, a 4.5-mile stretch where swimming, surfing, picnicking, and fishing are popular. Note that food is allowed only on the beach and nowhere else in the reserve.

• “Del Mar has the San Diego County Fair, which is the biggest fair of the year,” Thomas says, “and year-round, Del

Mar has phenomenal beaches.” The fair—which features amusement rides, games, exhibits, livestock, food, cowboys, and competitions—lasts for three weeks in June and July. Visit Del Mar State Beach, roughly 20 miles from WM San Diego, for fun in the sun.

• You can get to the San Diego Zoo and SeaWorld via public transportation, but the zoo’s Wild Animal Park, roughly 35 miles north of WM San Diego, is beyond easy reach without a vehicle. The spacious park is home to exotic creatures such as oryxes, rhinos, buffalo, cranes, tigers, and elephants. This year, that birthday is here in San Diego.

“Tomorrow’s Tuesday—that means we’re going to the

its restaurants and shopping.

Joseph traveled the world with his wife, now deceased. Both

often ensured free transportation. “We just traveled until half the

Joseph plans to pass his ownership on to his daughters. “In 20

From one owner to another: “Well, we just spent, like, $300 at

dinner together in their two units.

• Best first-timer tour: Th ose owners who are new to San Di-ego will get oriented and learn about this seaside jewel on the Old Town Trolley Tour. The 32-mile narrated tour takes two hours (longer if you opt to hop off and look around), and gives you an overview of the city, including Seaport Village, Old Town, Coro-nado (including a thrilling ride over Coronado Bay Bridge), and Balboa Park. Board the trolley at Horton Plaza ($30 per adult, $15 for kids 4–12).

• Best Mexican cuisine: With such close proximity to the Mexican border, that San Diego has excellent Mexican food is not surprising. Resort manager Th omas Stuart recom-mends Old Town for its myriad Mexican restaurants serv-ing up everything from chimichangas and carne asada to fi shbowl-size margaritas. Located 4.5 miles from WM San Diego, you can drive or ride the blue trolley line.

• Best museum browsing: San Diego is rich with museums: a children’s, maritime, fi rehouse, and contemporary art. In

addition, Balboa Park, a quarter-mile from your resort, has more than a dozen museums in which to wander. Kids and adults alike enjoy the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. Also popular are the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego Air and Space Museum, San Diego Museum of Man, and the Mingei International Museum, which exhibits folk art.

• Best performing arts venues: Each Sunday afternoon you can watch a 100,000-pound organ being played; such out-door concerts at Spreckels Organ Pavilion are free. If you’re visiting June through September, don’t miss the Summer Shakespeare Festival at the Old Globe outdoor theatre. Both venues are in Balboa Park.

• Best picnicking: Balboa Park also takes top honors for picnic sites. In addition to designated picnic and playground areas with tables and rest-rooms, favorite spots in-clude beneath the More-ton Bay fi g tree—near the Natural History Museum and adjacent to the Botani-cal Building and Lily Pond. Plan ahead as Ralph’s, the nearest grocery store, is in the opposite direction.

San Diego’s trolley system provides handy transportation for visitors.

• Best places to bike: San Diego is a bike-friendly town. Th e Coronado ferry line is full of spandexed riders on two-wheeled steeds waiting to ride Coronado’s streets and bike paths. Northwest of downtown, along Mission Beach and Pacifi c Beachis a boardwalk—really a concrete pathway open to bicyclists, runners, walkers, and inline skaters—with ocean views and fan-tastic people-watching. Th e very athletic can ride all the way from downtown to Mission Beach along Harbor Drive, says

Joe Hayes, maintenance manager at WM San Diego, “with a scenic view the entire time.” Bikes can be rented downtown and along the boardwalk.

• Best multisport destination: Accolades go to Mission Bay, an aquatic recreation area roughly 7 miles from WM San Diego, where, in addition to biking, inline skating, and running on pathways, you can kayak, sail, water ski, Jet Ski, swim, windsurf, and surf. You’ll fi nd outfi tters and rental

shops for these activities at Mission Bay. • Best city views: For a view of downtown from the water,

take a one- or two-hour San Diego Bay boat tour with San Diego Harbor Excursion. You’ll also learn about San Diego’s Navy ships, city buildings, and tourist spots, and perhaps see Navy Seals in training during this narrated tour. For a 360-degree view of San Diego and a gander at the Pacifi c Ocean, drive the winding road to the top of 800-foot Mount Sole-dad, in La Jolla.

• Best places for romance: San Diego is right on the beach and has beautiful sunsets, Cara says. Th e best spot for you and your sweetie to see the sun drop in the west is Sunset Cliff s, a strip of rocky coastline northwest of downtown. For views, cruise Sunset Cliff s Boulevard, which runs paral-lel to the cliff s, or stop at Sunset Cliff s Park, at the end of the boulevard, and walk its paths. In Balboa Park, you’ll discover the Japanese Friendship Garden, where the two of you can stroll and enjoy a cup of tea; and Th e Prado, a fi ne-dining establishment ideal for lovers, amidst arches, courtyards, and palm trees.

It’s big. it’s bold. it’s beautiful. It’s your new resort in Indio, boasting the first WorldMark presidential suites ever. All three are luxurious, decorated top to bottom with the finer things in life. Inside the approximately 2,500-square-foot units, you’ll find 42-inch plasma flat-screen TVs, custom-made dark cherrywood furniture, granite counter-tops, stainless steel kitchen appliances and barbecues, gas fireplaces, and rich window treatments.

The muted colors, chosen by interior designers Mark Kel-logg and Stacey Clifton, create a mood of comfort and ease. They chose neutrals accented with striking oranges, greens,

and splashes of red to bring the natural surroundings inside. “Design direction came from colors of the desert, and then we incorporated them into a contemporary Palm Springs motif,” Kellogg says. Through use of sleek lines, the design-ers added a modern twist to the desert/tropical approach.

The brilliant accent colors of the interiors are sparked by the dazzling hues of the natural surroundings on view from the patios. The emerald golf course dappled with lemon-yellow morning light, then the hills shaded in the deep pur-ples, burnished golds, and warm roses of the setting sun—enjoy it all from some of the best seats in the house.

A fter WorldMark Indio’s early july opening, all Adalberto Lugo really wants to do is fl oat aimlessly around the cool waters of the resort’s lazy river. But he

can’t. As the resort’s fi rst manager, he’s much too busy for that.

What do you think is special about this resort? Everything is at Indio. Families can engage in multiple ac-

tivities in a resort-like atmosphere. Th ere’s fun for kids such as our lazy-river pool. We’ve got a great fi tness center and an owners’ lounge second to none. Adult activities include fi rst-class golf next door, nearby casinos for nightlife, and great shopping and dining around the area. But most of all, our WorldMark team is special!

What are three fun things to do with the kids outside the resort?

Th e Knott’s Soak City Water Park to cool off on a hot day, Th e Living Desert with a variety of activities and animals, and the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway—all located in Palm Springs, 20 miles from Indio.

If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you would buy in Indio?

I would buy myself a home. Th ey have beautiful houses in the area but you need to win the lottery to buy one.

In Indio, do people really drink date shakes?Yes, they do. Many visitors visit the various establishments

that sell them, such as Shields Date Gardens on Hwy 111. I have tried one. Th ey are delicious and have a nutty taste—very healthy and refreshing.

Where would you consider the most romantic spot in Indio?

One of the presidential suites at WorldMark Indio. Once you are there, you will agree that there is not a more roman-tic place in the area than this—the views, the Jacuzzi, the sunset! You have to see it to believe it. I asked my boss if I could move in, but my request was denied.

Then where would you take your significant other on a dream date?

I like going to Zin American Bistro, a cozy and elegant but casual restaurant in Palm Springs with great food and wine. Th en we might take a leisurely stroll at the Villagefest on Palm Canyon Drive. On Th ursday nights, there is always good food, a variety of exhibits, arts and crafts, great live music, art exhibits, and an incredible atmosphere.

and the El Paseo Shopping District in Palm Desert—a gorgeous stretch of shops, restaurants, and galleries (16 miles from Indio).

What are your other recommendations for restaurants in the area?

Th ere are incredible restaurants such as Caff e Italia, where the waiters sing when they are not waiting on you. Th e food and service are great. Or there’s Okura, an outstanding Japanese restaurant and sushi bar in a casual environment.

What is Indio’s best-kept secret? Its excellent location among the desert cities and outstand-

ing golf courses.

If your mom came here to visit you, where would you take her?

She would defi nitely love the desert and just driving around the various desert cities. She loves to have someone drive her around, just like Miss Daisy.

What’s your favorite thing about the desert? Its beauty is amazing. I was particularly impressed during

the spring, and enjoyed the cool weather with the mountains full of snow; it is a stunning view!
