A peaceful and prosperousYear of the Goat

The Year of the Goat is approaching! Come February 19, we will ride the galloping horse out into the sunset and usher in the Year of the Goat, which some Feng Shui experts have forecasted as a year of peace and harmony.

With this in mind, I hope staff and members can work, play and socialise, in an atmosphere of peace and harmony. Due to the prevalent manpower challenges and labour shortages in the F&B industry, our service staff are currently quite stretched, especially during peak periods and the festive season. Hence, we seek your patience and understanding on occasions of the seemingly slow response time to your requests. I also hope that members can be considerate towards one another, in places such as the car-park and swimming pool. Let’s all strive towards peace and harmony in the Year of the Goat.

When we think of the Lunar New Year, what immediately comes to mind is ang pow, new clothes, and our usual festive treats, like bak kwa and pineapple tarts. But what I think is more important is the renewal of old ties and forging of closer bonds between friends and family members over this festive period. Families gather for their reunion dinner, we visit our relatives and catch up with how they are doing, we go house-warming at friends’ homes, and even have a game of mahjong. This is the spirit of Lunar New Year that binds us all, in the midst of the revelry, feasting and festivities.

Since its opening in November, the newly revamped Jade Phoenix has been drawing in the crowds. Records have been broken (in terms of revenue generated) and seating capacity has reached its maximum, especially during weekends, so much so that we had to ask members to come back or patiently wait to be seated.

Due to overwhelming demand from members, Jade Phoenix has announced that it will be open on the eve of Chinese New Year (CNY) for families’ reunion dinner and during the CNY period (except on 19 February). To cater to private events, Jade Phoenix has opened a brand new function room, called the Emerald Court. Here, you can hold special events for your guests, such as your Lunar New Year gathering, and at the same time, enjoy the ambience and service provided by our Jade Phoenix staff.

Still on the F&B theme, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our newest MC member, Mr Yeo Chui Hee, who is now Chairman of the F&B Sub-Committee. I would also like to thank our outgoing F&B Chairman, Mr Gary Oon, who has done a wonderful job during his tenure! Mr Oon, who is also Vice-President in the MC, will continue to serve as Chairman of the Social Sub-Committee and will now focus his energies on introducing new & exciting events at the Club.

On the swimming front, I congratulate our three Club swimmers, Christopher Cheong, Chantal Liew and Malcolm Low, who excelled at the 10th Singapore National Swimming Championships. They have done us proud, and will represent Singapore at the upcoming SEA Games in June, which we now await with keen anticipation.

On this note, I would like to wish our members and staff a prosperous and peaceful Year of the Goat. Gong Xi Fa Cai to all!

GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE

Come, enjoy a roundtable feast thisLunar New Year!

I wonder if you have observed that round tables are the favoured shape of tables used in Chinese restaurants and homes. Apart from the practical aspect of having a 10-person seating capacity and for ease of the diners to reach the common bowl or center plate of dishes, the round table has its signifi cance. Roundness has its cultural meaning for the Chinese. It symbolises “reunion” as in the Chinese word “tuanyuan”(团圆) - which literally means united and round. It can also symbolise success as in the Chinese word “yuanman” (圆满) — meaning rounded and complete. Unity, success and wholeness are cherished in the Chinese culture and I would venture to say that these traits are prized across all cultures.

The Lunar New Year Eve dinner, also known as the Reunion Dinner where families and close friends gather around a round table to feast, is an important part of the Chinese tradition. Indeed, it is so important that family members, who are far away from home, will make it back in time for this special occasion. This year, more than 600 members, families and friends will enjoy a rousing time over a scrumptious meal, specially prepared by our Chinese Master Chef Choi & his team at Jade Phoenix for the Reunion Dinner on 18 February. This is unprecedented! We will hear the resounding shouts of “Huat ah !” (prosperity) as the boisterous crowd toss high the Prosperity Yu Sheng (raw fi sh salad which is a uniquely Singapore cuisine available only during the Lunar New Year season).

Don’t be surprised if you hear the rip-roaring from exhilarated and satisfi ed diners coming from the old jackpot room on level 2, as well. This is because the old jackpot room has been retrofi tted into a new private dining area, named Emerald Court, as a permanent extension of Jade Phoenix.

For those of you who have made other plans for your Reunion Dinner but would not want to miss out on the Lunar New Year festivities at the Club, you can still sign up for the Annual Club Lo Hei Dinner on 27 February (the ninth day of the Lunar New Year). Celebrity Emcee Nick Shen and other artistes will bring you an entertaining evening, with good food (from Jade Phoenix) and great company. You can sign up at our Front Desk Reception Counter or call 6342 3695 to register. We have limited seats for the Lo Hei Dinner on 27 February, so be sure to sign up early while seats last.

This Lunar New Year season, we are facing a “happy problem”. As demand for tables at Jade Phoenix has been unprecedented and better than expected, we will be mobilising staff from other F&B outlets and departments to help out and to guide our auxiliary team of trainees and interns. The manpower crunch is here to stay, so we seek your forbearance if you experience slowness in service, and in the gentle and magnanimous spirit of the Goat — the mascot for this Lunar New Year, please be kind to our staff and trainees as they strive to serve you as best as they can.

Huat ah !

Alfred PoonGeneral Manager

PS: By the way, if you have yet to savour the highly acclaimed Cantonese cuisine at Jade Phoenix, then it’s time you make this your New Year resolution. Don’t be left out from the enjoyment of great food.

The revamp of the Deli Cabana has been completed and now includes more seating for members, who can now dine al fresco and enjoy the outdoors. The newly completed Deli Cabana has so far drawn in the crowds, who can be seen dining in numbers at the new area. It certainly appeals to members who buy their food or drinks from the Deli.

Another piece of good news is that the Multi-Storey Car Park (MSCP) has also received the TOP (Temporary Occupation Permit)! The newly completed MSCP offers more parking lots for both members and guests, and is a welcome addition to the Club!

EVENT REVIEW - LIFESTYLE

Everyone gathered early in the morning at the Harbourfront Ferry Terminal, excited to start the trip. Upon arrival at Batam, we made our way to the fi rst location — Yong Heng Food Trading, to purchase a variety of snacks as well as the famous sambal belachan. The next stop was Layers Batam, where everyone sampled and purchased the famous Kueh Lapis (layer cakes), available in a myriad of fl avours such as cheese, cinnamon and mocha.

Later, the group enjoyed a traditional Javanese Kuda Kepangperformance. Many were amazed by the performance which included glass and fi re eating. Then it was time for shopping! Members visited the 1st, Batik, Golden and Polo Ralph Lauren factory outlets, where they found an exciting range of watches, perfume and clothing. Some adventurous members even tried go-karting at the nearby circuit! By noon, everyone was famished and were delighted to dig into authentic Indonesian food served at the Sunda Sari Wangi Indonesian Restaurant, especially the tasty Ayam Penyet with sticky rice rolls in banana leaves. After lunch, it was time for sweet treats at the next stop — Chocolate House. As the name suggests, it was fi lled with a huge variety of chocolates resulting in everyone being spoiled for choice!

After a day of fun and excitement, everyone checked into the BCC Hotel & Residence for a much needed rest. Subsequently, members proceeded for a seafood dinner at the famous Golden Prawn

555 Restaurant. Right after dinner, the tour agent surprised everyone with a delectable chocolate cake topped with fresh fruit - to celebrate two of our members’ birthdays.

A trip to Batam would not be complete without a traditional Javanese massage. At First Choice Spa, Massage & Refl exology, members chose between a one-hour foot refl exology or full body massage. For members who wanted to continue to enjoy the sights and sounds of Batam - a karaoke session with private rooms and free fl ow of drinks was arranged for them, while others continued shopping at the mall near the hotel.

The next day, following a hearty breakfast, members visited the market where they purchased dried goods such as ikan bilis, dried shrimps, scallops and other items. Later, members were treated to a delicious buffet lunch that included local delights and Dim Sum at the Golden Palace Restaurant located in the Pacifi c Hotel. Before leaving Batam, everyone stopped at Mega Mall for some last minute shopping. Everyone had a great time in Batam, and look forward to another exciting trip!

Last but not least, even though we were not able to cater to abigger crowd as hotel rooms were fully occupied during that period, we hope that members will continue to look out for other upcoming events that will be organised by the Lifestyle Department in due course.

To kick-start the holidays, a two day non-residential boot camp jointly organised by ‘PlayMoolah’ and ‘Mosaik’ was held at the Club. The camp began with a warm welcome by the friendly facilitators playing various musical instruments, as the children made their way to the Fort Room.

During the camp, the children were introduced to the fundamental principles and virtues around the fi ve pillars of money - Earn, Save, Invest, Spend

The SSC Annual Christmas Light-Up Ceremony took place on 22 November at the Main Lobby. The evening began with Christmas carolling by our members and staff from various departments, led by Ms Elizabeth Ang. The highlight of the night was the lighting up of the Christmas tree by our Management Committee, with dazzling blue and white lights that also adorned the Main Lobby. This was followed by the balloon drop where the children excitedly grabbed as many balloons as they could.

There were also many activities to entertain both adults and children, such as the Ventriloquist Puppet show and interactive stage games. The star of the night – Santa Claus and the Santarinas fi nally made their appearance, much to the delight of all the children. At the end, everyone took turns to take a photo with Santa Claus and even got to take home some presents!

Members and guests started arriving at D’Tanjong by 8pm for the Christmas countdown. There was an impressive line-up of entertainment including Nora, our resident musician as well as Michael Jackson and Teresa Teng impersonators, who captivated the audience with a sleek dance performance and wooed the crowd with amazing vocals, respectively. Also, who could forget Lydia Sum, who entertained the crowd with her hilarious comedy segment.

One of the highlights of the event was the lucky draw, where fi ve lucky winners walked off with a bottle of Whisky each. There was also a game of ‘pass the parcel’ (an adaptation of musical chairs). When the music started to play, a gift box was passed around to each participant. When the music stopped, the last person holding the box won themselves a prize. At the end of the game, there were 10 lucky winners!

At around 11.45pm, everyone gathered near the stage to sing Christmas carols. When the clock struck midnight, members and guests welcomed Christmas, greeting each other with well-wishes. Overall, it was a great Christmas countdown and a nice get-together, as everyone had an amazing night.

To celebrate the last day of 2014 and welcome the year 2015, the Grand Ballroom was fi lled with members and guests, dressed in their best masquerade costumes. At the cocktail reception, everyone was treated to a mouth-watering spread from the candy buffet. At the same time, members and guests were able to take away wonderful memories at the photo booth fi lled with props, such as masks and feather boas that complemented the ‘fantasy’ theme.

The audience was entertained by Emcee Eileen Wee’s interactive and comedy segments, as well as the band of the night – The Thunderbirds. There was never a dull moment with the packed entertainment schedule.

Everyone was also treated to a fi ve course Chinese sit-down dinner, followed by a mouth-watering buffet. Participants gathered at the dance fl oor just minutes before midnight, to count down to the New Year. After midnight, the merry making continued as everyone

We would like to express our sincere appreciation for members and staffwho have contributed to the sales of the handmade keychain ornaments during last year’s Christmas.

A total of 160 keychains were sold and all proceeds from the sales have been channelled towards Care Community Services Society’s (CCSS) children services. This initiative would not have been a success without your generosity and support.

The funds raised were presented to Mr David Chan, Executive Director of CCSS, by Mr Gary Oon, Vice-President and Social Chairman of SSC, through a cheque presentation ceremony on17 December.

This activity put the children’s creativity to the test as they had to choose from a variety of colours and designs, to customise their own unique keychains. All of them completed their tasks successfully and at the end of the workshop they got to bring home two keychains each.

From November 6 to 16, SSC competed against SIA Group Sports Club (SIAGSC), at the 26th Annual Bilateral Games. The Games consisted of eight games, namely Badminton, Bowling, Golf, Snooker, Squash, Soccer, Table Tennis and Tennis. SSC won their fi rst game Badminton against SIAGSC with a score of 12-6. SSC’s winning streak continued as they won in the Bowling (22-8) and Golf (525-497) events. As SSC had already won three out of eight games, this boosted the morale of the SSC players for the remaining games.

Next was Soccer, and SIAGSC was well-prepared, as the game was played on home ground, which gave them an advantage. SSC lost with a score of 2-6. However, SSC bounced back as they won the games for Squash (6-0) and Table Tennis (7-6). Our SSC Snooker players competed against the SIAGSC Snooker players (who are also part of the National Snooker League) and tried their best, but lost to them 2-5. Due to bad weather, the Tennis event was cancelled. Overall, SSC emerged as the winners of the 26th Annual Bilateral games for the second time in a row!

The dinner and trophy presentation was held at the SSC Mountbatten Room, where SSC Sports Chairman Mr Simon Ong addressed participants and supporters. SSC President Mr Chua Hoe Sing presented the trophies to the winning SIAGSC team captains, while the SIAGSC Board of Games Chairman Mr Looi Tein Po presented the trophies to the winning SSC team captains.

EVENT REVIEW - SWIMMINGFINA World Cup (Singapore Leg): 1 and 2 November

Competing against the world’s bestby CONDREY LIU

The FINA World Cup (Singapore Leg) was held at the OCBC Aquatic Centre. Over the course of two days, the competition showcased international swimming athletes competing in Singapore. We had nine representatives who qualifi ed for this prestigious competition. Being an international meet, our swimmers’ main aim was to maintain their form and attempt to better their personal best records in this competition.

Christopher Cheong participated in all three breaststroke events and made it to the fi nals for each one. He clocked in new personal bests in all three events and was fourth in the 200m breaststroke. Malcolm Low managed sixth place in the 400m individual medley and eighth place in the 200m backstroke.

Chantal Liew bettered two of her personal best times in the 200m backstroke and 800m freestyle. She managed to reach the end of the 800m in sixth position. Chloe Wang rewrote her personal best time in the 200m freestyle and completed the 800m freestyle just slightly behind Chantal in seventh place.Ashley Khoo participated in four events, clocking in two new personal best times in the 200m and 400m freestyle. Ethan Lim qualifi ed for the 200m freestyle and promptly clocked in a new personal best time. Kathlyn Yeo competed in the 100m and 200m butterfl y and achieved a new personal best in the 200m. Brandon Tan and Melissa Chan, two other participants in the meet, ranked eleventh in their best events.

It was also the fi rst time that our swimmers participated in the mixed relay events. These events comprised a team of two male and female athletes. Chantal, Christopher, Malcolm and Chloe came in sixth place for the 200m medley relay, while Malcolm, Ethan, Chloe and Ashley achieved seventh place in the 200m freestyle relay.

It was a very enriching experience to compete against the best in the world. Our swimmers performed to the utmost of their abilities and showed that they could perform amongst the world’s best.

EVENT REVIEW - SWIMMINGSSC Grand Prix: 5 December

Four meets completed!by CONDREY LIU

Swimsafer: 8 to 12 December

Learning new skillsby CONDREY LIU

The SSC Grand Prix is a series of four swimming meets that are held over a period of one year. At each meet, all swimmers compete for points. At the end of the year, these accumulated points are totalled to determine the overall champion for the respective age groups.

SSC organised the SwimSafer course for members during last year’s December holidays. This was the fi rst time in two years that we had managed to conduct this course.

SSC offers the bronze, silver and gold levels for SwimSafer. However, there was only demand for the bronze level classes. This course offers a different aspect of swimming which is not in our current programme. During the course, the 17 participants learnt new skills which would benefi t them as they progress through the various levels.

SUMMARY OF COURSE SKILLS

Entries and Exits- Enter the water using a compact jump

Sculling and Body Orientation- Demonstrate forward and backward somersaults in the water

Underwater Skills- Search and recover an object in 1.5 metres of water depth- Demonstrate a feet fi rst surface dive

Movement/Swimming/Strokes- Swim 100 metres continuously - 25 metres front crawl- 25 metres breaststroke- 25 metres backstroke- 25 metres survival backstroke or sidestroke

Survival and Activity Skills- Dressed in swimwear, shorts and t-shirt, demonstrate three minutes of swimming slowly using any appropriate swim stroke, changing each minute

Rescue Skills- Perform a throw rescue using an unweighted rope over a distance of 6 metres- Wade to a person and deliver a fl oatation aid in deep water- Approach in “Ready” position

Knowledge- Principles of water craft safety

On 5 December, the last Grand Prix featured 78 swimmers who swam in 172 events. There were 158 new personal bests set during this fi nal meet. At 92%, this high percentage was very encouraging as it was the end of the year, where most swimmers would have reduced their training frequency.

As all four meets have been completed, the overall age group champions will be announced at the upcoming Swimming Gala Night in April 2015. Do keep a look out for the winners!

STAFF NEWS

Annual Staff D&D: 3 November

Fright nightby SHYAMALA NAGULESWARAN

It was thrills and chills at this year’s Halloween themed staff Dinner & Dance. Just after 6pm, staff started streaming into Hilton Hotel’s pre-function area. It was defi nitely an unforgettable night with our staff dressed as Chuckie, Medusa, Supergirl, Superman, and a crew of gun wielding masked mafi a! Everyone scrambled to take photos with each other to capture their special moments.

The dinner started off with a speech by Club President Mr Chua Hoe Sing, who thanked all staff for their hard work over the past year. After that, the night’s programme began! The night started with the ballroom plunging into darkness and fi lling up with fog. Next, zombies were unleashed in all different directions scaring everyone as they moved across the ballroom. This was followed by a “Zombie Dance”.

In the games segment, everyone’s hands and minds worked overtime as they tried to fi gure out the identity of the monster featured. The next game got everyone on their hands and knees, dressing up a selected person as a Mummy – with toilet roll and any other material they had on hand.

One of the highlights of the evening was the ‘Long Service Award’ and the ‘Employee of the Quarter Award’ which were presented to staff who have served for fi ve years and more and for staff who have shown outstanding work performance, respectively.

During the Lucky Draw, some very attractive prizes were given away. In the Best Dressed competition, a few male and female staff were shortlisted and were made to catwalk. The winners walked away with cash prizes! At the end, the smiling faces said it all. The staff defi nitely had a good time as they were able to take a break from work to relax and enjoy themselves.

STAFF NEWS

Hard at workby SHYAMALA NAGULESWARAN

While almost all of us were enjoying ourselves at the Annual Staff Dinner & Dance, six members of our facilities team was hard at work in the Club completing various restorative works. As the restoration process would be noisy and dusty, it would have affected the operation of the Main Lobby, Jackpot Room, Children’s Playroom and Ballroom, thus the Club would have required a day of closure. However, as the Club was closed from 3pm onwards for the D&D, the facilities team was able to complete the works that lasted till midnight, without any disruption.

The most essential task that day was to repair all the wall surfaces of the Club’s Main Lobby. As no work had been done to it for the past eight years, the old paint was blistering and peeling, affecting the look and feel of the Club.

We would like to extend our thanks to the facilities team, namely Roger Tan, Nahar Azmi B. Masrani, Abdul Halim B. M. Taib, Mohd. Arif B Omar, Zhou Zuo Ming and Azni Bin Basri for their hard work!

GETTING TO KNOW YOU

Interview with:

Coach Zhang Chan YanSection Head, Development and Competitive35 years old, joined in November 2002by SHYAMALA NAGULESWARAN

The responsibilities of a Swimming Coach are both challenging and ultimately rewarding. It entails preparing athletes for competitions as well as communicating strategies and goals to swimmers, team members and staff.

Taking on this role (with keen enthusiasm) at SSC is Coach Zhang Chan Yan, who is the Section Head of the “Development and Competitive” programme. She started swimming at the age of six and was on the Jiangxi Province Swimming Team in China. While she was a competitive swimmer in China, she took part in many competitions and one of her best achievements was winning a silver medal in the 400m freestyle at the China National Age Group swimming competition.

After retiring from competitive swimming at the age of 18, she became a Swimming Coach. After coaching stints in China, Coach Zhang decided to join SSC due to its excellent swimming programme. She has a total of 17 years of experience and has coached swimmers of various ages in both countries.

When she isn’t coaching, the mother of two likes to spend time with her family, cook and watch movies. Coach Zhang tells us rather sheepishly that she has a weakness for cheese cakes as well as desserts. Coach Zhang also loves going to Japan for holidays to enjoy the beautiful scenery and tasty food.

She believes that patience, perseverance and passion are necessary to motivate and encourage her swimmers to do well and keep on improving. Coach Zhang also makes sure she exercises on a regular basis in order to keep fi t. Finally, her goals for the future are to work hard and ensure that her swimmers achieve good results.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU

Interview with:

Chef Patrick TanPastry Chef, Main Kitchen Joined in January 2011by SHYAMALA NAGULESWARAN

The eye-catching and mouth-watering cakes at Le Petit Tresor are the creative works of Pastry Chef Patrick Tan who has been baking for almost 20 years. He was inspired by his love of pastries and now whips up American and French style cakes and pastries as well as cupcakes for birthdays, weddings and other special occasions, including chicken pies and curry puffs at the Deli.

Chef Patrick began learning the basics of pastry making at Singapore Meridian Hotel and The Dynasty Hotel. Later, he joined The Oriental Hotel, where he learnt how to do high standard cake decoration and presentation as well as prepare bite-sized pastries and desserts for cocktail parties. Chef Patrick was also Assistant Pastry Chef at Carlton Hotel Singapore and Pastry Chef at Amara Hotel.

After his stints at many of the best hotels in Singapore, Chef Patrick joined Café Cartel where he was part of a team posted to Jakarta to oversee the set up of Café Cartel’s overseas outlet and later Foodedge Gourmet, where he was in charge of a production kitchen that supplies food and beverage to various restaurants and cafés.

As Chef Patrick is in charge of the SSC’s Pastry Department, his responsibilities include planning pastry production for banquet functions, supervising the quality of pastry and bakery production, menu planning and introducing new cakes and pastries (ie. the “much anticipated” cake of the month). In addition, he also takes on special requests from members for customised cakes.

When he is not baking, Chef Patrick spends time with his family and plays badminton. He also loves travelling to different countries, such as China, France, Korea, Switzerland and Taiwan where he can fulfi l his other passion – photography.

To Chef Patrick, a pastry chef should be responsible, have good leadership, teamwork, organisational, problem solving and communication skills to be able to guide, supervise and ensure cooperation among the pastry team. His goals for the future include exploring different ideas to create new cakes and improving quality control measures.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU

Interview with:

Security Officer Vicky ToonSecurity Offi cer62 years old, joined in August 1994by SHYAMALA NAGULESWARAN

Ever wondered about the people responsible for ensuring the safety and security of SSC members? In this article, members will fi nd out more about security offi cer Vicky Toon, a familiar face in the club, who joined SSC in 1994 (some twenty years ago!) and has been here ever since. Vicky decided to become a security offi cer as she prefers to work outdoors instead of being cooped up in an offi ce. However, she had no prior experience in the security industry and had to learn everything from scratch.

To prepare for this role, Vicky underwent various training courses to learn about fi re alarms, service quality, computer literacy and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) under the National Skills Recognition System (NSRS). Although she faces challenges in her daily work such as unexpected incidents, she takes it in her stride and strives to do her best. Also, according to Vicky, alertness, cooperation, teamwork and keeping fi t are essential qualities that a security offi cer should possess.

When she is off-duty, the mother of two enjoys travelling to Hong Kong, Macau, Phuket and Batam. Vicky also likes going to church, cooking for her family and working with Katong Community Centre to do social work (helping to take of the elderly). She hopes that in the future, she will continue to stay healthy to be able to keep working and take care of her family.

For the past 20 years, Vicky has been happy working at SSC and wishes to thank all members as they have always been kind and caring towards her, as well as the Club management for taking care of the staff.
