LET’S TAKE A CLOSER LOOK EGG Day 0 A fertilized egg is laid on the hair shaft within 4-6 mm of the scalp.

NYMPH 6-9 days in, a nymph makes its way into the world and is able to start crawling.

ADULT By day 23, lice are fully mature and capable of mating. Male and females mate once, providing the female adult with a reserve bank of sperm to use as she continues to lay eggs throughout her lifetime (day 35 the louse dies).

The cycle repeats itself with each newly laid egg, making it impossible to eradicate lice unless sufficiently treated by a professional lice treatment company.

What are head lice?Perhaps you feel that dealing with the nuisance of head lice is an inevitable right of passage that parents have to endure. Sure enough, finding out your child has a case of head lice can cause feelings of shame, anxiety, and worry.

So what exactly are these insects that wreak havoc on the lives of many families and households? Head lice, not to be confused with sea lice, nor body lice are small six-legged parasitic insects that make their home in human hair. To survive, they receive nourishment by biting into the scalp and sucking the blood of their human host several times a day.

How long can lice survive?Assuming the lice have a host (a human’s scalp), the life cycle of a louse is about 30 days. Duringthat time these critters are laying numerous eggs—up to 200 eggs per louse—that will hatch and do the same. Thus an infestation left untreated can last indefinitely. Without access to fresh human blood, lice can only survive for about 24 to 48 hours. Lice go through three basic stages of development: Egg, Nymph, and Adult Louse.

What do head lice look like?

Lice eggs, also known as “nits”, appear as yellowish or whitish specks in color, and are found attached to the hair shaft. Adult lice are generally grey or brown though they can camouflage and assume the color of the host’s hair. Exceptionally fast crawlers, head lice multiply and spread rapidly, laying their eggs in the hair of the infected host.

At about 1/8” long adult lice are similar to sesame seeds in both size and appearance.

How do head lice spread?Head lice pass through head-to-head contact with an individual who has head lice or by sharing personal belongings with an infected person such as hairbrushes, pillows, hats and anything else that touches the hair or scalp. Highly contagious, though not disease-spreading these parasites pass rapidly among children in close contact such as in schools, daycare centers, summer camps and on sports teams. Anyone can get head lice and spread it to another person and having the condition is not related to the cleanliness of a person or home. Furry friends can’t contract or spread head lice.

NIT TEST: Shake the hair to see if the tiny grain-like “specks”fall out. If not, you may have lice.

The difference between nits and dandruff Head lice nits (eggs) and dandruff may be similar in appearance (both small and white or yellowish in color), but the important difference is the way in which lice and nits adhere to the hair. Dandruff and flakes caused by dry scalp fall away when brushed, whereas nits are attached to strands of hair and do not brush away.

What are the symptoms?

Moving and tickling sensations in the hair and scalp can be the first signs of a head lice infestation. However, in most cases symptoms of having contracted lice don’t appear until up to 4 to 6 weeks and by that time lice families have already made comfortable homes on your head and in between your hair strands. Not everyone experiences common symptoms, but there are some things that can alert you:

· A persistently itchy scalp caused by a reaction to the saliva of lice· Nits attached to the hair that may appear as dandruff or dirt· Small red bumps or sores on the scalp from scratching

Spot those head lice! Conducting routine head checks for lice is your best defense for winning the war against head lice. Even if you don’t suspect your child has lice, get in the habit of checking at least every two weeks. Finding it early reduces your chances of dealing with a severe infestation.

Adult lice are easier to spot when exposed to sunlight or bright fluorescent lighting because they scramble in an attempt to run and hide!

Nits, however, are more difficult to identify, with many people confusing them for dirt or dandruff flakes. When in doubt get help from a professional, specifically trained to spot lice and nits as they examine the hair section by section.
