Be smartphone savvyGetting or giving a new phone for Christmas? Here’s what to do nextOperator please If you haven’t already done so, check what operating system your new phone uses. Is it iOS, Android, Windows or BlackBerry? Once you know, you can start buying apps from the specific store.

Make it your own Customise your home screen. Transfer or add contacts. Explore your phone and all it can do. Just make sure you spend some of the festive period talking to your family – and not just on your phone.

Picture perfect Family. Friends. Presents. Christmas lunch. Four things that feature in most people’s Christmas Days. Plus taking and sharing lots of photos/videos of these things. Set up MMS on your phone, but check if picture messaging is included with your tariff.

Get linked up Use Chromecast to link your new phone to a tablet or Smart TV, so that you can watch content across various devices. It’s easy to set up and available on Android phone, iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows laptop or Chromebook.

Protect your phone Buy a screen protector and case to protect your new phone from scratches and scrapes.

Back up your phone before passing it on. This will

save things like contacts and apps.

Delete the content from the phone with a factory

reset – an option in the phone’s settings.

Deauthorise your iPhone on iTunes via your

computer so it’s no longer recognised. You can

authorise your computer again later, but this will

remove the option to access your iTunes account.

Get started at apple.com/support

Choose a new sim card. If you’re giving your

old phone to a friend or family member, they will

need to get a new sim. Choose between a Pay

Monthly Sim Only tariff (p43) or Pay & Go (p44-45).

Not sure which tariff is right? Then ask in store

for advice on which one to choose.

OUT WITH THE OLDNew phone? Want to pass your old phone on to a family member? Use our checklist to get it as good as new

DID YOU KNOW? Mobiles can harbour more bacteria than a toilet seat. Keep germs away with

antibacterial wipes.
