A.P. Indy Colt Makes $1.4 Mil... In 2010, John and Jerry Amerman were in theheadlines opening night here when a horse they bred,Mr. Besilu (A.P. Indy--Balance), brought a whopping

$4.2 million. While a half-sibling to thatcolt couldprovide furtherthrills when itgoes under thehammertonight, theAmermansagain kicked offa September

opener with panache, but this time on the buying end.The Amermans were part of a buying group thatsecured the session=s top-priced yearling, a beautifullybred A.P. Indy--Malka colt who went for $1.4 million.Hill >n= Dale Sales Agency consigned. Bloodstock agent Bob Feld, who advises theAmermans and selected MGISW Balance at auction forthem, helped put the group together at the behest oftrainer Neil Drysdale and his wife, Shawn Dugan.Robert AShel@ Evans and a third, unnamed party, completed the buying team. AIt all happened fast,@ saidFeld. AI bumped into Neil and Shawn late this afternoon, and they said that they'd come up with the idea oftrying to buy the horse. I loved the idea; I was ecstaticabout it." Feld added the deal was a no-brainer. AHe was agorgeous foal, and there aren=t too many A.P. Indysleft,@ said Feld, who confirmed that Drysdale wouldtrain the colt, just as he trained his sire, A.P. Indy. ANeilthought he looked more like A.P. Indy than any othercolt he=s ever seen before. I called the Amermans andsaid I really thought it was a good idea. The upside isphenomenal on this horse. If Neil can win a stakes race, let alone a graded stakes or the Kentucky Derby, I toldthe Amermans it was well worth their money to investwith the other people and roll the dice a little bit.@

Feld said the price tag made the transaction thatmuch sweeter. AI can=t believe he went for $1.4 million. He=s priceless as far as I=m concerned. With his looksand being by A.P. Indy--there aren=t going to be manymore A.P. Indys that look like that with that kind ofpedigree--I thought it was a very good price. Neil=straining the colt, and the plan is to win the KentuckyDerby.@ The colt indeed has a sterling pedigree. He is thesecond foal from the Deputy Minister mare Malka, awinning 6-year-olddaughter of thegraded stakes-winning blue henGet Lucky (Mr.Prospector). Thefull-sister tochampion Rhythmhas proven abrilliant foil to A.P.Indy, producing sixfoals by the Lane=sEnd star, includingGISW Girolamoand the gradedwinners Daydreaming and Accelerator. They alsoinclude the fine producers Supercharger, dam of Derbywinner Super Saver (Maria=s Mon) and GSW Brethren(Distorted Humor); and She=s a Winner, dam of GISWBluegrass Cat (Storm Cat) and GSW Lord of the Game(Saint Ballado). AThis horse had eight scopes, all from serious, important people, so we knew he was going to sellwell,@ said consignor John Sikura, who bred the coltunder the Hill >n= Dale banner along with Phil Steinberg.ABut you never know where they=re going to finish. Iwasn=t surprised when it took off and kept going. We=rehappy with the price, and it was in the range wevalued. It was a great result.@ Hill >n= Dale sold the colt=s year-older full-sister, the asyet unraced Champagne Courage, to Bobby Flay lastyear at FTSAUG for $625,000. -L Marquardt

Bolton Keeps to Familar Streets... George Bolton admitted he had inside informationwhen he went to $1.2 million to secure a colt by StreetCry (Ire), consigned by Gainesway, at Keeneland

Sunday night. The coltwas bred byStonestreetThoroughbreds, withwhom Bolton hasowned horses such astwo-time Horse of theYear Curlin (SmartStrike) and this year=sGI Preakness S. third-place finisher Astrology(A.P. Indy). AWe have

worked as partners in the past when we owned horsestogether and we=ve become friends,@ Bolton, speakingby phone from his California home, said ofStonestreet=s Barbara Banke and her late husband JessJackson. AThey allowed me to go to the farm and seethis horse a bunch of times. As a result of that, he wasthe one I wanted to get tonight. I saw this horse growup and whenever you can see a horse grow up andknow a horse from its early days on, obviously it=s ahuge advantage for a buyer.@ Bolton had expected to be at Keeneland in person lastnight, but his travel plans were delayed by the poweroutage that hit Southern California last week. Instead,Keeneland=s Mark Maronde, sitting in the back row ofthe sales pavilion, did the bidding while speaking withBolton on the phone. Bolton said he jumped into thebidding at $850,000 and wasn=t sure he would get thegray colt. AI went to $1.1 million and someonecountered at $1,150,000 so fast, I thought this is it. Itold Mark that this was my last number and then it gotreally quiet. But the way the bidding was going, I didn=tthink I=d get him.@ Bolton added he had expected theyearling to sell in the range of $700-$900,000. Yesterday=s seven-figure yearling is the third foal outof Stonestreet=s multiple graded stakes winner ForestMusic (Unbridled=s Song). The mare=s first foal,Maclean=s Music (Distorted Humor), was bought backby Stonestreet for $900,000 out of the 2009Keeneland September sale. The colt was an impressivewinner of his only start to date, blitzing six furlongs atSanta Anita in 1:07.1.

AMaclean=s Music may be as fast as The Factor,@Bolton said, referring to the speedy multiple gradedstakes winner he co-owns with Fog City Stables.AForest Music was one of the fastest mares to run thisdecade. When she was semi-on she was lethal, so youare putting together a first foal who was a fairly goodyearling that was a buy-back and ended up winningimpressively at Santa Anita. I think the mare has proventhat she can throw a runner and she was a runnerherself. This was [bloodstock advisor] John Moynihan=sfavoriteBhe was a standout.@ The first seven-figure lot of the 2011 Keeneland salealso accomplished another first when it left an Irishmanshort for words. AI am speechless--first time ever,@ laughedGainesway=s Michael Hernon after the Street Cry coltleft the sales ring. AHe is a super nice-moving horse andsuper athletic. He is very well-related, out of a majorrunning mare and by a top stallion.@ Of the yearling=sfinal price tag, Hernon added, AThat was way beyondour expectations, not to say that it was unrealistic. There was good strong bidding all the way through theprocess. It=s a great result for Stonestreet and we aredelighted that they had Gainesway consign the horse.@ -Jessica Martini

Coolmore Nabs Bernardini Colt From Southern Equine... In recent years, much has been made of a perceivedfeud between rival titans Coolmore and Darley, withtalk that each side wasn=t buying yearlings by the othercamp=s sires. Last year, however, Coolmore rep DemiO=Byrne signed for a colt from thefirst crop of Darley=s young stallionStreet Sense, the $435,000Castaway, who was runner-up inhis debut at Del Mar Aug. 20 fortrainer Bob Baffert. Last night, during the opening session of theKeeneland September Sale, theIrish conglomerate did their best toput talk of a feud to rest, purchasing the night=s fourth-highest-priced yearling, a Bernardini three-parts brotherto GISW Sweet Symphony (A.P. Indy), for $875,000.The Feb. 17-foaled dark bay is a son of Brandy Rose(Distinctive Pro), a half-sister to Horse of the Year HolyBull. Cont. p4

Coolmore cont.

AI don=t know much about the sire,@ said O=Byrne aftersigning the ticket before adding of Coolmore=s mostrecent acquisition, AHe=s a good mover. He=s a qualityhorse and Holy Bull is close in the family.@ Coolmore=s Richard Henry later added, AOur policy

has always been to tryand buy the best horsesin the sale, regardless ofwho they=re by, whoconsigns them, or wherethey=re from. We=re onlytrying to buy the besthorses--that=s alwaysbeen our policy. Webought the Bernardinitonight, we bought amare in foal toBernardini her last year, and we=ve purchased a

Manduro (Ger).@ Manduro stands for Darley in Europe. The transaction was yet another big score at thesales for Meg Levy=s Bluewater Sales and the colt=sbreeder, Mike Moreno=s Southern Equine. Last July, they teamed to sell the topper at Fasig-Tipton, aMedaglia d=Oro--Beright colt for $450,000, andfollowed up by selling the topper at Fasig-TiptonSaratoga, too, a colt by A.P. Indy--Maryfield who wentfor $1.2 million. (An Unbridled=s Song half-brother tothe latter sells today as hip 192.) Levy said the colt lived up to expectations. AI think inthis market, we were cautiously optimistic, but I thinkthat=s what he=s worth,@ she said. ABut a horse is onlyworth what anybody=s willing to pay for him.@ Asked about selling a Darley-sired horse to Coolmore,Levy commented, AI=m always glad to see people buyingnice horses. I haven=t actually been in the position tohave worried about that too much. But it looks likeCoolmore is really back in the market looking for goodhorses, and I don=t think it matters whose camp it=s by.Bernardini is a top stallion, and this was a greatindividual.@ Levy added, AI was giggling as we led him up herebecause he looks like the black stallion. And he reallyshowed his presence in the ring. He=s been all class thisentire sale. He=s forward and happy, and everybodyreally loved him. We=re really happy for Mike Morenofrom Southern Equine.@ Moreno, who has crafted a world-class broodmareband in recent years that includes 15 Grade I mares, hereports, wasn=t on hand to watch the colt sell, buttalked with the TDN by phone afterwards. AWe want to let everyone know that we=re a breedingoperation that also races, but we don=t want to get thereputation that we only send our bad horses to thesales,@ Moreno said. AWe hope buyers get comfortableknowing that when Southern Equine puts a horse in asale, that they=re there to sell for the right price.@

In general, Southern Equine offers its best colts atauction while retaining the better fillies, said Moreno.AWe try to sell our best one or two colts from eachcrop,@ he said. The Louisiana-based businessman said he consideredthe colt well-sold, as the reserve was $600,000. AWe=llsell a horse for a fair price, but we=re not going to giveaway horses, either,@ he said. AIn general, we do ourown analysis and say, >If we were looking to buy thishorse, what would we be willing to spend on him?= Andthat=s how we set the reserves. For this horse, wethought the low end for him would be $600,000 andthe high end $800,000, so he brought what weexpected on the high end. But two or three years ago, this horse brings $2.5 million. It=s just a sign of thetimes. But I want to thank Mr. [John] Magnier[Coolmore principal] and Demi O=Byrne, and I=m happyfor them. I hope the horse goes on to do big things forthem.@ -L Marquardt

Fine Start for Leon... Ben Leon marked his entrance into the Americanyearling sales scene in style last summer, toppingKeeneland September sale with $4.2-million purchaseMr. Besilu (A.P. Indy). Absent from the sales so far thisterm, he returned with a vengeance last night, purchasing four yearlings for an aggregate of$3,000,000, and topping all buyers in the process.Leading his expenditures was Hip 72, a colt by StreetCry (Ire), who was the third highest-priced colt of thesession at $975,000. The May 2 foal is out ofchampion 3-year-old champion filly Hollywood Wildcat(Kris S.), winner of three Grade I events, including theBreeders= Cup Distaff. AIf he can run, he will be a great stallion,@ said Leon. AHe=s got the pedigree and everything, so it=s up tohim.@ AShe is a very high quality mare--she is a little older, but she proved she can produce a nice horse,@ saidtrainer Todd Pletcher, who in addition to his father J.J.Pletcher and veterinarian Dr. Jorge Gomez, served asadvisors on the purchases. AHe=s very well-balanced andgives me the impression that he is a horse that willcontinue to grow and develop. I haven=t had too manyStreet Crys, but it=s a proven cross and Mr. Leon reallyliked the pedigree.@ During last night=s proceedings, Leon jumped into thefray early when paying $525,000 for Hip 25, aDistorted Humor colt out of Words of War (Lord at war{Arg}). He also secured Hip 83, a filly by Indian Charlieout of Lu Ravi (A.P. Indy), who realized $775,000; andHip 104, a filly by A.P. Indy out of Private Gift(Unbridled) that brought the same amount. Both the Street Cry and Distorted Humor colts wereoffered by session topping consignor, Taylor MadeSales. AHe was a big, gorgeous horse--he was just a hunk,@said Mark Taylor of Hip 25. AWhen he came out, he justtook your breath. He=s one of those kinds of horses. Wethought he might bring $650,000, but you never know.It was in the ballpark of what we thought he mightbring, so we were happy with the price.@

Leon, Chairman of Florida-based Leon MedicalCenters, entered the world of Paso Finos 29 years ago,but only appeared on the Thoroughbred scene threeyears ago. He is currently in the process of stocking hisracing string, but expects to add a few more to histeam at the upcoming November sale at Keeneland. AI wanted to get my feet wet first, and take it onestep at a time,@ said Leon, explaining his entry into theThoroughbred game. AI don=t want to run before I walk.I know what I don=t know, so I=ve surrounded myselfwith people that know a lot about Thoroughbreds. Ihave the foundation of 29 years with show horses, butI am still learning about Thoroughbreds.A Leon currently has seven broodmares at his BesiluFarm, located just outside Ocala, Florida, and hopes toadd a few more from his racing team over the course ofthe next few days. AThe plan is to have a group of horses on the farm forbreeding that are made up of quality, not quantity,@ saidLeon. AAt the same time, we want to be able to enjoythem on the race track.@ As for his vision for the future of his racingenterprise, Leon added, AI really love breeding, it=s mypassion. I want to assemble an outstanding group ofracemares with top conformation and pedigree, so wecan hopefully produce nice babies...and enjoy theprocess in the meantime.@ As for last year=s sale-topper unraced Mr. Besilu, whowas the highest priced yearling sold at KeenelandSeptember since 2006, he has been given some timeoff at the farm in which he was named after, and isexpected to return to Pletcher later this year. AWe sent him to the farm for a little rest, and heshould be back with Todd Pletcher by the end of theyear, maybe November or December,@ confirmed Leon.AWe=re not rushing him, because he=s a big horse like[his dam=s half-sister] Zenyatta, so we don=t want torush him and burn some future riches.@ Underscoring his primary directive in his racing andbreeding venture, Leon concluded, AYou can=t collectapples if you collect oranges,@ he said. AIf you want thebest, you have to buy the best.@ --C Bossinakis

Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Good Day For Taylor Made... Also heading its respective division, Taylor MadeSales Agency sold 15 yearlings for a total of$5,375,000. Leading the way for Team Taylor was Hip 72 (see above). AI thought he was the best-bred colt in the sale,@ saidTaylor Made=s Mark Taylor. AHe is out of arguably themost prolific producer in the last 10 years, and he=s byone of the best stallions on the world.@ As for his physical attributes, Taylor added, APeoplecould see that he is a great colt now, and imagine whathe can be in a year from now. He=s a May foal, and hehad all the parts, but he wasn=t a man yet. I have highhopes for him.@ In total, Taylor Made offered 21 yearlings duringSunday=s opening session, resulting in a healthy 71%success rate. AYou=re always disappointed when you have an RNA--you=re looking for the undefeated season, but they=rehard to come by,@ admitted Taylor. AIt=s been fair. It=sbeen great in spots. We had a couple that brought$400,000 that I thought might bring $600,000, butthere are so many hoops to jump through. It takesperfect horse to hit on everyone=s menu. Overall, I=mvery pleased. Our reserves were conservative, therewas a lot of money over our reserves. That gives you agood feeling that there is a lot of depth to the market.@ As for the overall health of the market, Taylor added,AI=m thrilled with the way today went,@ Taylor said. AIfyou had told me two weeks ago we would have hadthe results we have, I would have been doingcartwheels. I gained more optimism while we wereshowing these horses. I thought we had one of ourbest group of horses in Book 1 than we=ve had in a longtime. So my optimism kept growing as we got closer tothe sale.@ --C Bossinakis

Dynaformer Colt Tops Shadwell=s Buying List... The Shadwell Estate of Sheikh Hamdan, ensconsed ina private room at Keeneland, secured six yearlingsduring last night=s session of the September said. Thehighest-priced of the group was hip 42, a colt byDynaformer out of graded stakes winner BohemianLady (Carson City), who is a half-sister to GISW AnyGiven Saturday (Distorted Humor). The yearling, bredby Satish Sanan=s Padua Stables and consigned byThree Chimneys Sales, sold for $725,000. Sanan andThree Chimneys= Case Clay watched the colt sell frominside the sales pavilion and were happy with the finalresults for a horse, who according to Clay, has starpower. AWe are real pleased,@ Clay said. AThe colt is allbusiness. All week, he=s been that way. When otherhorses go out there and get tired, he stands like astatue and says, >Where do I need to walk?= He is goingto be a great racehorse.@ Clay added the sale was a winfor the entire Three Chimneys team. AI am so proud ofthe team at Three Chimneys,@ he said.

AThe colt was conceived, raised, and prepped atThree Chimneys, so from the breeding shed to the salesring, it=s credit to the team at Three Chimneys.@ RNAs were heavy during the early going at Keenelandyesterday, and Clay admitted that was a concern. AIwas worried,@ Clay said. AHowever, this horse is astandout and we knew he was a standout. We had alot of attention on him. We were concerned about theslow start, but we thought he was such a star, hewould sell well. Sometimes sales get off to a slowstart, but there is a lot of quality coming up. I amoptimistic about the quality of what I=ve seen, so I thinkwe=ll be all right.@ In addition to the Dynaformer colt, Shadwellpurchased a Distorted Humor half-brother to Rule(Roman Ruler) out of a half to Funny Cide (DistortedHumor) (hip 4) for $550,000; a filly by Distorted Humorout of champion Fleet Indian (Indian Charlie) (hip 62)and a Street Sense half-brother to To Honor and Serve(Bernardini) (hip 101) for $500,000 each.

Shopping Pays Off for Gainesway... Always on the look-out for a quality broodmare,Antony Beck=s Gainesway found opportunity knockingat the 2009 Keeneland November sale. Beck securedthe mare Shop Here (Dehere), in foal to Tapit, from theHobeau Farm dispersal at that auction for $300,000.That sale came just months after the mare=s half-brother Trappe Shot (Tapit) brought a FTMMAY juvenilesales-record $850,000 from bloodstock agent SteveYoung. The colt is now a graded stakes winner andtwice Grade I placed. AWe liked the female family andwe thought Trappe Shot was going to emerge as agood horse,@ explained Gainesway=s Michael Hernon.AShe is a very attractive mare by Dehere. DeputyMinister, the grandsire, gets very attractive stock. It=sthe Northern Dancer line and Tapit loves being bred tothat male line--although he seems to work with manymares.@ The purchase proved prescient when the mare=sTapit yearling (hip 10) sold yesterday at Keeneland for$575,000, once again to the bid of Young. AShe was asuper balanced filly with great class and composure,@Hernon said of the chestnut yearling. AShe camethrough the outer ring here and walked in there like aprincess. She sold very well to a top judge, with severalnoted horsemen as underbidders.@ Gainesway currentlyhas a broodmare band of around 75 head, but is alwaysopen to the right addition. AWe=re always open-mindedto find something to add and, I imagine with the verygood sales and the dispersals coming up in November,we=ll do our homework and see if we can find ourselvessomething for the future,@ Hernon added. Shop Here, athree-quarter sister to Grade I winner Miss Shop (DepuyMinister), is also the dam of GSP Fifth Avenue(Monarchos) and SP Shoptate (Orientate). She has aweanling filly by Tapit and is again in foal to theGainesway stallion. -JM

Ecology (Unbridled’s Song), winless in two starts on the track, wentthrough the ring at KEENOV 2005 carrying her first foal, by Sky Mesa. Itwas Robert Randal who signed the ticket at $120,000. The resulting coltbrought just $20,000 as a KEESEP yearling, and was claimed for$20,000 out of a maiden claimer first time out, but, named GeneralQuarters, he has gone on to Grade I glory, in the Blue Grass S. on thePoly and the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic on the lawn, and nowboasts earnings of $1,181,230. The Randal Family Trust reaped therewards of his success when a daughter of Tale of the Cat--Ecologysold for $300,000 at this auction in 2010; now named New Wave, shewas fourth in the GII Adirondack S. on the dirt and second in the P.G.Johnson S. on the grass at Saratoga. This full-sister to that filly provedeven more popular in the ring. The mare foaled a filly by Pulpit this year.

PRIDE WITHOUT PREJUDICE Slated to go under the hammer near the end ofMonday's second session are a pair of yearlings thathail from a family that has served Airdrie Stud andformer Kentucky Governor Brereton Jones very well.First through thering will be Hip201, a chestnutcolt by Unbridled'sSong out of PacificSpell (Langfuhr). Amere $7,500 claimby trainer DaleRomans at TurfwayPark in 2003,Pacific Spell wastaken to theKeenelandNovember sale later that fall by Brereton Jones. However, the then 4-year-old failed to find any takersat $25,000 and was led back to Airdrie. Buyers=oversight that day proved fortuitous for Jones, however, when the mare produced a filly by the youngAirdrie stallion Proud Citizen in 2005. Named ProudSpell, the bay was retained to race for Jones, but notfor the reason many might think. "She was a very small filly, who had pretty longpasterns, and consequently, she wasn't a really goodsales candidate and that's why we raced her," laughedJones. Despite her shortcomings, Proud Spell proved to be amenace on the racetrack, showing talent at two withrunner-up finishes in the GI Matron S. and GI Breeders'Cup Juvenile Fillies. The filly proved dominant at threewith wins in the GI Kentucky Oaks, GI Alabama S., GII Delaware Oaks and GII Fair Grounds Oaks en routeto a sophomore championship. And while the hoperemains the May 28 foal can match his big sister'sracing prowess, Jones indicated the colt certainly didn'tinherit much of her physicality. Cont. p10

"This colt has much more size to him than ProudSpell did," said Jones. "He is a late foal, May 28, buthe is a very nice sized colt right now, not overly so, justvery well put together. He is also a chestnut and she isa bay, so they really don't look anything alike." Pacific Spell, who was bred to relatively new, unproven sires during her first five rounds in the

breeding shed, finally got herchance to meetwith a top shelfbachelor in 2009. "[Pacific Spell]had not been bredto the provenstallions beforeshe was bred toUnbridled's Song,"informed Jones."But when we didfinally decide to

send her to a leading stallion, we got just what wewere hoping to get." Not long after Proud Spell's little brother exits thering will her own yearling by Indian Charlie enter it.While Proud Spell's half-brother appears to have verylittle in common with his illustrious sister, Hip 207shows plenty ofevidence of exactlywhich cloth she iscut from. "This filly looksmuch more like hermother," confirmedJones. "She isbeautifullyconformed, verycorrect and is awonderful movingfilly. Her profile ismuch the same asProud Spell and she will probably be about the samesize as her mother when she reaches maturity." As for her father's influence, Jones added, "She's puttogether like so many of the Indian Charlies, by that Imean she doesn't have the longer sloping pasterns likethat of her mother." Standing in sharp contrast to Pacific Spell's roster ofunproven mates early in her breeding career, ProudSpell's exploits on the racetrack earned her the servicesof Airdrie's marquee stallion, Indian Charlie. "Indian Charlie is a proven stallion and I wanted togive her a start since she is a champion," explainedJones. "I wanted to give her a chance with a horse thatwe know can produce a champion and Indian Charliemeets that criteria. Quite frankly, we got what we werelooking for.@ --Christina Bossinakis

We=ve seen that Bernardini isperforming all over the world, dirt, grass, synthetics--itdoesn=t make any difference. And this colt is out of amare that could really run and it=s kind of a Europeantwist to the first two dams. So I think this horse isgoing to have a lot of international appeal. Hip 191, c, Unbridled=s Song--Madcap Escapade, by Hennessy

Consigned by Hill >n= Dale Stud, agent This colt is from a family that has starred on the trackand in the sales ring in the past decade. His dam wasthe explosive racefilly Madcap Escapade, a millionairesswhose wins included the GI Ashland S. at Keeneland.Madcap Escapade is a half-sister to the equally excitingDubai Escapade (Awesome Again), both beingdaughters of MSW Sassy Pants (Saratoga Six). MadcapEscapade has already made her mark as a broodmare,as her first foal was Grade I winner Mi Sueno (Pulpit). Her second foal, the 3-year-old California (A.P. Indy),sold for $1 million to Demi O=Byrne in 2009, while afilly named Divine Escapade (A.P. Indy) made $900,000here last year.

TOP OF THE HILL In a business where even modestly priced horsescosts more than a luxury car, owners must haveimplicit trust in the bloodstock agents selecting andbuying their horses. Usually that trust is based on atrack record, and over the past decade, few agents in

the industry have a bettertrack record than TomMcGreevy. The man whothese days operatesexclusively for Rick Porter=sFox Hill Farm has purchasedsuch major winners aschampion Midnight Lute (RealQuiet), Round Pound(Awesome Again), RockportHarbor (Unbridled=s Song),Old Fashioned (Unbridled=sSong), Winslow Homer(Unbridled=s Song), FriesanFire (A.P. Indy), Honest Man(Unbridled=s Song) andFreefourracing (FrenchDeputy). In 2011, he can

boast about the standout 3-year-old filly Joyful Victory(Tapit), as well as one of the current favorites for Horseof the Year honors, the 4-year-old Havre de Grace(Saint Liam). All but Midnight Lute and Freefourracingran in Fox Hill=s red and white colors. AWe=ve been lucky each year to have a nice one,@McGreevy said modestly over coffee at the KeenelandcafJ on Friday. It=s an enviable honor roll, but at some point in everybloodstock agent=s career, they=ve purchased exactlyzero graded stakes winners. That=s the positionMcGreevey found himself in way back in 1986, whensecuring deep-pocketed clients who would trust his eyefor a horse was difficult. So, having left a career as atrainer and moved to Florida, McGreevy got creative.

AI didn=t have any money to speak of, I didn=t haveany clients, and I didn=t know anybody,@ he said. AButthe first year I was there, I went to the sales andworked them like I usually do, knowing I wasn=t goingto buy anything. Each sale, I picked out the top 10horses I liked, and afterward, I would take out an ad inclassifieds of The Blood-Horse or the ThoroughbredTimes or whatever, and list the horses. That way, I hadit documented before they ran that these were thehorses I selected.@ Somewhat improbably, the idea worked. McGreevybegan picking up clients, and his business gainedmomentum. In the >90s, he joined forces with BeckyThomas, and began pinhooking, too. ATom and I worked together for a long time, and he=ssuch a nice guy and such a hard worker,@ said Thomas. In 1999, McGreevy=s fortunes took a serious turn.Through an old buddy from his Penn National days, trainer John Servis, McGreevy was introduced to FoxHill=s Rick Porter. AI was here at Keeneland buying horses, and I foundthis one filly I loved, but didn=t have a buyer for her,@said McGreevy. ASo I called John up and said that heneeded to try and buy this horse. John had a lot ofconfidence in me and called up Rick, and so Rick calledme and we talked a bit. He agreed to buy the filly, andwe were able to get her for $85,000.@

The filly turned out to be Zonk (Farma Way), whowon the GIII Delaware Oaks and GIII Affectionately H.and earned nearly $560,000. Porter later sold Zonk, infoal to Gone West, for $875,000. Further success withPorter soon came in the form of Round Pond, a$105,000 KEESEP yearling acquisition in 2003. RoundPond won the GI Breeders= Cup Distaff in 2006 andearned just a tick under $2 million. At the conclusion ofher racing career, Round Pond was hammered down toJohn Ferguson for $5.75 million. AShe was an interesting horse,@ said McGreevy. AWebought her for $105,000, which I think was less thanthe stud fee at the time for Awesome Again. But shewas a late May baby, and was small at the time--shegrew up to be a nice-sized horse.@ In 2003, McGreevy landed Rockport Harbor for$470,000 at KEESEP. The biggray, nicknamed >Rocky= by hisconnections, turned into amultiple Grade II winner on thetrack and is now a successfulyoung sire at Darley. ARockportHarbor was probably the best-walking horse I=ve ever seen,@said McGreevy. AHe had a realpresence to him--he was just a standout.@

At the 2004 September Sale, McGreevy was stillaround shopping when a big, smooth-walking son ofReal Quiet entered the ring as hip 3625. McGreevypurchased the horse, Midnight Lute, for $70,000. AI had bought him for my brother and myself, and wesent him to the 2-year-old sales with Eddie Woods,@said McGreevy. AI know it=s easy to say after the fact,

but I loved thishorse. The firsttime I saw himgallop, I said,>Eddie, this is thehorse.= At thattime, though, RealQuiet was reallycold, and the marehad no pedigree, but I told Eddie Iwouldn=t sell him

for less than $300,000. Everybody probably thought Iwas crazy. But it=s not that often I feel that stronglyabout a horse, and you have to stand up for what youbelieve sometimes. I actually tried to get Rick to buyhim, but he didn=t like his pedigree. I bought him backat the sale [for $290,000], but Bob Baffert called a fewdays later and bought him privately.@

Whether that was a good transaction for McGreevy isdebatable, as Midnight Lute won consecutive editionsof the GI Breeders= Cup Sprint in 2007 and 2008 andearned over $2.6 million. McGreevy will be a short price to add a thirdBreeders= Cup winner to his resume in November withHavre de Grace in top form. The Fox Hill filly is comingoff a victory over males in the GI Woodward S. atSaratoga, which pushed her earnings past the $1.9million mark. McGreevy purchased her for $380,000 atthe 2008 September Sale. AIt=s funny, with the good horses, I can rememberwhat barn they were in as yearlings, because theymake such an impression,@ said McGreevy. AThere areso my factors that make up a good horse, and theyreally need to be the complete package. And there aresome intangibles that factor in. Those really goodhorses, they know they=re really good, and they carrythemselves a different way. Havre de Grace was likethat.@

Success Classified... Born in western Pennsylvania and raised in SouthCarolina, Tom McGreevy wasn=t raised in a family thathad horses, but enjoyed the next best thing. AWe were lucky enough to live next to a farm ownedby a couple who didn=t have any kids, and they justkind of adopted us,@ he said. AWe lived over there withthe riding horses and cattle, and grew up that way.@ After high school, McGreevy joined the Army andfought in Vietnam for a year. AIt gives you a littledifferent perspective when you come home, and I wasmore focused on what I wanted to do.@ McGreevy went to Penn State for Animal Science, and there he hooked up with the livestock judgingteam. AA lot of people aren=t familiar with those, but it=s abig deal over there just to make the team,@ saidMcGreevy, who credits the experience with helpingrefine his eye. AWe judged everything from pigs tocattle to horses to sheep. In the mornings of a contest, you=d place the animals 1-2-3-4, and in the afternoon, you had to give an official judge why you did it the wayyou did. So it really gave me a great background inbeing able to reason why you liked an animal or not.You couldn=t just go in a tell the judge, >Well, I just likedthe horse,= you had to really pick him apart.@

During the summers, McGreevy joined his brother inNew York and Delaware. His brother was an assistantfor trainer Frank Whiteley, and McGreevy rubbed horsesfor the Hall of Famer. After he left college, McGreevy got his trainer=slicense and began training at Penn National. AThat wasanother great learning experience,@ he said. McGreevy knew that what he really wanted to do,however, was bloodstock work. Hence the classifieds. And now, 25 years after placing his first ad, McGreevyis one of the industry=s most-respected agents. He saysthat he=s found the perfect fit with Porter and Fox Hill. ARick and I have a great rapport, and Rick has a lot ofconfidence in me,@ said McGreevy. AOne thing thatmakes it work is that he really lets me do my job. Andmy job is to find good individuals. Excelebration was under the radar for the Apr. 16 G3 Greenham S. on his seasonal bow, but came out theother side of that seven-furlong contest with anenhanced reputation as the only rival capable of puttingit up to Frankel (GB) (Galileo {Ire}). He went on toconfirm that favorable impression by winning the G2 Mehl Mulhens-Rennen with authority at CologneMay 22. Third behind Frankel in the G1 St James'sPalace S. at Royal Ascot June 14, the bay wasfreshened up, and resumed with a six-length score inthe G2 Hungerford S. at Newbury last time Aug. 13.Rank leaving the gates here as Handsome Maestro (Ire)(Dansili {GB}) set off hotly in front, he received an idealtrail from the clear second Rio de la Plata, and soonsettled into a more comfortable rhythm leading themain pack along. Frankie Dettori still lookedcomfortable as he assumed command on Godolphin'sstalwart in early stretch, but his lead proved short-livedas Jamie Spencer unleashed Excelebration to roll bywith 300 meters to go. Driven out to assert, the baywas always holding the game Rio de la Plata. Whetherthe winner would by now be a match for a moremature and physically advanced Frankel is open toquestion. The evidence may come in Ascot's G1 QueenElizabeth II S. Oct. 15, although an appearance againstGoldikova (Ire) (Anabaa) at Churchill Downs is analternative option, according to Marco Botti. "I don'tknow the plan yet. We'll have to sit down and discussmatters, but he could go to Ascot or the GI Breeders'Cup Mile [Nov. 5]," Botti said.

Galikova, who ran fifth in last term's G1 Prix MarcelBoussac on the Arc undercard, opened her sophomorecampaign with a smooth conditions score over Sharetaat Saint-Cloud Apr. 8, and garnered a first pattern-racerosette in the May 7 G3 Prix Cleopatre back there May7. She failed by a length to reel in the G1 Poule d'Essaides Pouliches victress Golden Lilac (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) inthe June 12 G1 Prix de Diane at Chantilly, but gainedrevenge on that rival in a valuable renewal of the G2 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano at Deauville last time Aug. 15. Restrained in fourth early, the homebredmoved smoothly throughout--despite the rain-affectedturf--and was urged closer soon after turning for home.Going through the gears as jockey Olivier Pesliercontinued to apply pressure inside the final quarter mile, the bay quickened smartly under whipless coaxing inthe latter stages to win decisively. The victory saw herjoin half-sister Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa) on the Group 1roster, and almost certainly booked her passage to theOct. 2 G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe back over thiscourse and distance. "She quickened very nicely, andwhat I really loved was her action inside the finalfurlong, which was tremendously light," commentedtrainer Freddy Head. "I think she belongs with the bestand, although I have to discuss it with the owners, Ican't imagine she won't run in the Arc."

Galikova=s third dam Gold River carried theWertheimer colors to victory in the 1981 Arc. Her damhas a yearling full-brother to Goldikova named Anodin(Ire). She foaled a Galileo colt in April and was bredback to Dansili (GB). Runner-up Testosterone may join her in Europe'send-of-season showpiece, but conditioner Pascal Barydid not immediately confirm that as a definite target forthe G2 Prix de Malleret victress. "She has run a verygood race, but the winner was just too good," Barysaid. "She could run in the G2 Prix Royallieu [atLongchamp Oct. 1] , but she has already won a Group2, so I don't see the point. She is in the Arc and we willdiscuss it, along with the prospect of whether shestays in training at four, so if she goes there, it will be alate decision."

Reliable Man, patiently ridden throughout, assumedcontrol approaching the final eighth, and needed littleencouragement to easily impose his authority and booka return ticket to the Bois de Boulogne on the firstSunday in October. Unraced as a juvenile, Reliable Manhit the ground running with a three-length victory in anApr. 12 newcomers' event at Saint-Cloud, and doubledhis tally in a 10-furlong conditions event at Chantillynext time May 9. He continued his rapid rise throughthe ranks by returning to the Chateau to claim Classicglory in the June 5 G1 Prix du Jockey-Club. The greysustained his first defeat when third to Meandre onunsuitably quick ground stepped up to 12 panels in theBastille Day highlight. Third early in this Arc trial, hemade smooth progress off the home turn and wasgiven a shake of the reins by Gerald Mosse to easilytake control approaching the final furlong and score inimpressive fashion. The win provided trainer Alain deRoyer-Dupre with a third victory, one of which camewith Reliable Man's sire in 2003. "We suspected thathe would be better with a little bit of ease in the groundand he has confirmed that today," trainer Alain deRoyer-Dupre explained. "It was too fast for him in theGrand Prix de Paris, but today the ground was justperfect, and that helped. He was quite impressive andhas the action and stride of a really good horse, so,hopefully, he will come on for that and be back for theArc."

This was just a prep for Sarafina as the homebred isfine-tuned for the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, inwhich she suffered major interference 12 months agoen route to finishing an eye-catching third. With onlyfour runners, the expectation was that this oftenuninformative trial would not provide any majorexcitement ahead of the main feature in three weeks'time. In the event, Christophe Lemaire's daring in theclosing stages as he threaded the favorite through theeye of a needle put some hearts in mouths among theLongchamp faithful. Showing her advanced maturityfrom last year, the J “TDN Rising Star” J raced in adetached last throughout, then muscled through analmost non-existent gap between Hiruno d'Amour andSt Nicholas Abbey inside the final furlong. At the line, the bay flaunted her impressive acceleration once again, and registered another cozy success without any needfor the whip. Despite being outclassed on the day,Hiruno d'Amour stuck to his guns to put up anencouraging Arc trial for Japan, while Ballydoyle'sraider St Nicholas Abbey and the positively riddenNakayama Festa dented their Arc prospects by fadingout of contention at the business end. A stewards'inquiry was called to look into Lemaire's maneuver, butthe result was unaffected. "She was a little fresh andkeen and, as always when she has not run for a while, the idea was for her not to have a hard race," trainerAlain de Royer-Dupre commented. "Christophe's movewas in line with the idea of not giving her a hard race, which might have been the case had she been asked togo around the Japanese horse."

‘PANTHER’ FINISHED FOR YEAR Trainer TomDascombe is looking forward to next season with G1 StLeger runner-up Brown Panther (GB) (Shirocco {Ger}).Beaten three lengths by Masked Marvel (GB) (Montjeu{Ire}) in Saturday's Doncaster Classic, Michael Owen'shomebred will return at four, with the G3 Ormonde S.at Chester's May meeting penciled in for his return."He's absolutely fine," Dascombe told PA Sport. "Hepulled out fine this morning and went for a nice walk,he's been turned out in his paddock and is in greatshape. I thought he ran a terrific race, full ofdetermination and guts. He was the first one off thebridle and the last one beaten. He's improved everysingle run, and I don't see why there's any reason hewon't improve as a 4-year-old.@ He added, AThat's it forthe year. He's had seven runs and he hasn't had aneasy one. It's going to be a decision whether we stephim up in trip, or step him back down."

OXX PLAYS DOWN >SEA= HYPE Trainer John Oxx was keen to contain the excitementsurrounding the Tsuis' Born To Sea (Ire) (InvincibleSpirit {Ire}) following his impressive winning debut atThe Curragh Saturday. Successful in the six-furlongListed Blenheim S. at the Kildare venue, the 3/4-brotherto Sea the Stars (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) wasimmediately penciled in for Leopardstown's G3 Killavullan S. over seven furlongs Oct. 30. Hisconditioner reiterated the plan for the J “TDN RisingStar” J yesterday. "We are not expecting him to behis brother, as you can't expect to ever get another onelike that, but it was a good effort for a horse having hisfirst run to beat horses rated in the high 90s," Oxxsaid. "That means he ran to a rating of over 100, sothat's a pretty good start for any horse. He's got a bitof talent--he is bred to have it, and had been showingus that in his work. We didn't really fire him up to winthe first time and, although he goes through softishground quite well, he should handle good ground fine indue course.@ He continued, ASeven furlongs is ideal forthe moment, so we'll probably wait for the Killavullan. It's a little bit of a wait and, although I would havepreferred it if we had another race a month after, unfortunately we've no other race to run in until then. We've been shuffled back by his shin soreness andstarted later than we expected, so we have to waitseven weeks.@ The conditoner concluded, AI don't lieawake at night worrying about it, but when you look athim, you have to hope he's a good horse. He certainlyhas some of his brother's talent, but how much remainsto be seen."
