A Note from John Carns
Your ASP teams returned after two weeks of making six homes warmer, safer and drier in Johnson City, TN and Jonesville, VA. As Christ’s hands and feet, we restored hope for homeowners in desperate need of help. We formed many new relationships and deepened many others and came back invigorated and renewed in our faith. Please join us on Sunday, August 25 as the ASP team will lead the services, show a few pictures, describe the projects we worked on and relate how the trip impacted us and our faith walk.

Don’t miss the Preacher’s Pop-Up Prayer on FB Live! Every Thurs at 7pm this summer!
Volunteer Opportunity with Lifestyles Lifestyles is having their quarterly Food Distribution and Clothing Bazaar on Saturday, July 27! The event is in the LifeStyles parking lot located at 101 Catalpa Drive, La Plata, MD. Volunteers should arrive at 8am and we will work until approximately 1:30pm. We need your help. If you can assist, please send an email to [email protected] and let Tammy Gausman know your plans. It is important that Lifestyles knows if you can only work a few hours, as they must be careful to have coverage for both set-up and break-down.
Get Your Church Apparel! Tee's, polo's, sweatshirts and tie dye shirts with the church logo screen printed on them will be available for order beginning this Sunday. Orders will be taken until August 11 and items should arrive in time for the Fair. Payment is requested at the time of purchase with checks made out to: LPUMC Youth. Various colors and styles are available, stop by the cart after service to see samples and pick up an order form. Corrie Roberts can answer any questions about the apparel sales.
Fellowship Opportunity - Dine out!
"Texas Roadhouse” has been one of LPUMC's annual Dine Out stops. Once again on Wednesday, August 14 from 4:00 to 9:00PM we will meet there for Fun, Food, and Fellowship (a 3F event). Bring your coupon, and join us. A portion of the money spent will be rebated back to LPUMC. That money is applied to the our mortgage principal. It's an easy way to pay down the loan. Everyone eats out at least one time a month. Join the fun!
Charles Regional Medical Center to Host Seminar
The Charles Regional Medical Center Foundation is holding a free seminar on Wednesday, August 14
th from 5-7pm in the
Nagula Conference Room of the Medical Center. The seminar will be presented by a team of medical staff and will cover the various aspects to consider when trying to stay at home well past 65 years of age. Topics covered will be advance directives, fall prevention and medicine safety. Please register for this seminar at www.charlesregional.org/seminars or by calling 301-609-4132. Refreshments will be served.
Fellowship + Crabs = FUN at the La Plata UMC Crab Feast Please join the Fellowship ministries team at Port Tobacco Marina on Tuesday, August 6 from 5-8PM. This family friendly restaurant located on the water and right up the road, will be reserving tables just for our church where we can enjoy a summertime favorite in Maryland, Steamed Blue Crabs! Crabs will be available (price TBA) and all other menu items can be ordered as well (everyone pays for their own). If you’ve never experienced the fellowship and fun of cracking crabs and un-shelling the delectable morsels of buttery crab goodness, you are missing out!! No experience is needed – a brother or sister sitting next to you will teach you! We need to give the restaurant an estimate of crab eaters so they can have extra on supply. Sign up during church this Sunday at both services or contact the Church office no later than Friday, Au-gust 2. We hope to see you at the Marina!

Let’s Chat! There is still time to sign up! La Plata Church will be holding small group discussions surrounding the issues that divide us through the lens of scripture. If you are interested in attending these sessions, please let the church office know by phone, email, or by writing "struggling together" on the attendance pads when you come to service on Sunday mornings.
LPUMC to Host 57th Annual Early Childhood Educators Statewide Conference On Thursday, August 8th we will be hosting a conference for Early Childhood Educators that is sponsored by the Baltimore Washington Conference of the UMC’s Directors Roundtable. This conference will be for teachers, aides and directors working in child care centers in our conference, as well as, area child care centers or family providers. Over 250 attendees will spend the day in workshops utilizing almost every room in our church! Pastor Susan will be the Keynote Speaker and will lead the participants in worship prior to the day getting started. I will need some volunteers to help guide everyone around our church building, which as you know, can be a bit confusing. I would need you to be here around 8am until around 11. If you would like to help out, please contact me at [email protected]. Julie Robbins
Mentors Sought for Next Confirmation Our next confirmation class will start this September and run until May. If you are interested in supporting youth going through this process, please consider serving as a mentor! A 'pool' of possible mentors is being created in preparation for the year. A mentor is partnered with a specific youth and talks with them, answers questions, supports the youth on their faith journey and will be invited to attend a few confirmation events. If you are interested in more information or are ready to put your name in the pool, please talk with Pastor Susan or Corrie Roberts.

Six-year-old Dan decided one Saturday morning to fix his parents pancakes. He found a big bowl and spoon, pulled a chair to the counter, opened the cupboard and pulled out the heavy flour canister, spilling it on the floor. He scooped some of the flour into the bowl with his hands, mixed in most of a cup of milk and added some sugar, leaving a floury trail on the floor which by now had a few tracks left by his kitten. Dan was covered with flour and getting frustrated. He wanted this to be something very good for Mom and Dad, but it was getting very bad. He didn't know what to do next, whether to put it all into the oven or on the stove, and he didn't know how the stove worked! Suddenly, he saw his kitten licking from the bowl of mix and reached to push her away, knocking the egg carton to the floor. Frantically, he tried to clean up this monumental mess but slipped on the eggs, getting his pajamas white and sticky. Just then he saw Dad standing at the door. Big crocodile tears welled up in Dan's eyes. All he'd wanted to do was something good, but he'd made a terrible mess. He was sure a scolding was coming, maybe even a spanking. But, his father just watched him. Then, walking through the mess, he picked up his crying son, hugged him and loved him, getting his own pajamas white and sticky in the process. That's how God deals with us. We try to do something good in life, but it turns into a mess. Our marriage gets all sticky, we insult a friend, we can't stand our job, or our health goes sour. Sometimes, we just stand there in tears because we can't think of anything else to do. That's when God picks us up and loves us and forgives us, even though some of our mess gets all over Him.
But just because we might mess up, we can't stop trying for God or for others. Sooner or later, we'll get it right, and then they’ll be glad we tried.
