Chair Chat Saturday saw just the Ladies 1s play and in hindsight probably wished they had not with a heavy reverse to Spencer. The Men’s saw the 1
st go down to PHC
Chiswick but a double win in league and cup puts the 2nd
team into the Semi Finals of the Plate and gain a 2
nd win
of the season in the league. The 5ths and 7ths had good wins plus the Past Masters joining the action. My team of the week goes to Chris Butler with his 7-1 win to move off the bottom of the table. The Men’s 2s won the Plate Quarter Final on Sunday and face old adversaries Brighton and Hove at the seaside on 9
th March , a day that sees the Over 60s travelling to
Sheffield to play Yorkshire. Eastcote will be spread through the country that day. The other 2 Cup Sides the over 50s and the Mixed who are both in their Trophy Round 3 games this Sunday. Is it my impression but so many people seem to take half term holidays even if they don’t have children or involved in education! London was rather empty this week. I know that outside of the 1
st & 2nd teams many players
in both Men’s and ladies sections are looking for improved training. I will be talking to the section Captains on how we can improve this and to ensure we have a more structured Club Training sessions set up when it starts again in the late Summer. The Club is happy to pay for Coaches – if you can identify those willing to undertake these roles then let Irene, Reggie or myself know. 2 Men’s teams have a spare slot this weekend – the 4ths Oppo pulled out the league at the start and the Old Boars on Tuesday. Very frustrating for all concerned. At least that gives more people a clear run to watch the Rugby in the Clubhouse from 4pm!

Message from Eagles Satwinder & Polay
We trust the season goes well and have been keenly following the exploits of the club with great interest. Unfortunately we have been unable to play this season as a result of someone very immediate has been diagnosed with cancer.
Polay and myself have been roped in by our children to participate in a 10K muddy fun run (end March 2014) for Cancer Research UK and we both committed without knowing what we were letting ourselves into.
In order to illustrate the course I have attached the following two links to illustrate the challenge and is no less than the challenge we faced playing some of our games last season.
Our training goes well and I have started jogging. However I would like to mention that I got overtaken by a young girl walking her dog much to Indi's amusement.
Any donations will be gratefully received and can be made via the donation website which can be accessed through the link below. https://www.justgiving.com/beastsfromtheeasts/
Many thanks

Men’s 1’s v PHC Chiswick 1’s Saturday 15th February Lost 2 – 4
Foured This week saw Eastcote take on 4th place PHC Chiswick who are still in the hunt for a promotion place. It was the visitors who started the better and scored inside a minute, they the
to take a 3-0 lead. Eastcote then pulled one goal back when Ben Thorpe scored his first goal for the men's 1s after pouncing on a rebound off the keeper. Second half saw the reds have a fair bit of possession but they just couldn't find the second goal to get back in the game. Chiswick then added a fourth from a short corner before Mark Defanis scored to make the final score 4-2 to the visitors.
Ladies 1’s v Spencer 1’s Saturday 15th February Lost 0 – 7
Too Much Marks Saturday started off well, lovely sunshine and team spirits high. What followed in the game vs 3
rd placed Spencer is
that we came up against a team that were slick and organised and who on the whole finished off each scoring opportunity they had. In the previous game we drew 1-1 with them but on Saturday it was obviously going to be an uphill struggle as after 6 minutes we were 2-0 down to a slick PC routine and a quick counter attack. However, for the next 28 minutes or so we were in the game and had the ball in their final third a lot but unlike them we didn’t create the same type of chances. I did score during this spell but the umpire pulled it back to the top of the D for an initial Spencer foul which gave us no advantage. Shooting ourselves in the foot we gift wrapped them a third goal a minute before half time which saw them effectively take the 3 points there and then as we have not scored many goals in a game since early November. However, we put that to bed at half time and prepared to play our best for the rest of the game. Letting in 4 goals in the second half one might think that we had simply given up but they scored 2 early goals from PC’s and then very late in the game got a final two in open play when with nothing to lose whatsoever we were caught on the counter attack. In the middle part of the game we did play some good hockey but the end product at the moment is lacking.
SUBS ARE NOW OVERDUE If subs are not paid by 30
th November, players are
not eligible to play matches. ADULT £180 STUDENT £ 100* JUNIOR £ 100 SOCIAL £ 90 * But no winter season match fees payable PAYMENT By cheque to Eastcote Hockey & Badminton Club Ltd, or electronically
What was pleasing, if you can say that at all about conceding so many for the first time in over 4 seasons, was the fact that we did keep playing and trying instead of giving up. Batch and I received MoM and Chunky was DoD for a major fail in regripping Batch’s stick with a grip the same size as her old one finishing half way up from where it should of, though it can’t have affected her performance! Eye whipped out her Walnut whipp cake and with the votes counted and logged it is Chunky’s turn next time out. With a week off now we will get ourselves ready and prepare ourselves properly on Friday evening’s for our final 4 games with two tough fixtures away against second and first surrounded by two home fixtures against mid table and bottom of the league respectively. For the first time we are looking over our shoulders at the teams below who have stolen a march since the New Year winning some key fixtures. With 2 going down and one place still up for grabs to an oh so lucky team we need to refocus on our season aim of consolidating a place in Division 2. Having a week off I’m looking forward to seeing/supporting the other Ladies teams in action as they have all been in superb form in recent weeks, so hopefully it will be more of the same for the 2-5s this weekend :). Men’s 5’s v Amersham & Chalfont 3’s Saturday 15th February Won 6 – 3
From The Ridiculous to the Sublime
After the inept team performance the previous week, a huge improvement was demanded from the 5’s this week. A stern and frank pre match talk by ‘Harry the Hairdryer’ galvanised the players back to their winning ways. The first 20 minutes was dominated by Eastcote with free flowing passing and dribbling, creating a number of good chances which ultimately culminated with a sublime goal from Gurdeep with a reverse stick hit from the top of the D. So from changing nappies in the morning to goal scorer in the afternoon and the Ranchi Rhino’s scout was nowhere to be seen! The forwards linking up well with Jat and Paul tracking back to pick up the ball and support the midfield. Their tireless work paid off with 2 goals apiece. The wingers, L and Andrew giving the team the wide options. Andrew being spurred on by his Mum’s instructions holding up the ball, taking on the defenders and making incisive passes, which created a number of chances and short corners. Harry by now fancied his luck, the ball is pushed out; he gets himself in position; steadies his feet, gets his balance, swings and the ball is in the back of the net. All done in one single movement but in slow motion! The midfield of Raj, Sarosh and Vincent controlling the middle of the park with Sarosh impeccable distribution
and Vincent’s timely tackles breaking down A&C’s attacks. The backs worked hard with Motta and Buddy channelling their forwards towards the corner flag and minimising their attacking options. Kyle in goal making some fine saves. As the game went on, tiredness crept in from the frantic pace of the game, and lapses in concentration gifted A&C 2 soft goals. But by now the game and result was beyond their reach. Another 3 points secured! Final result 6-3.
Past Masters v Southgate Magnums Saturday 15th February Won 3(1) – 2(1)
. . . very WINDY, but what’s new this year . . .
The PMs travelled halfway round the M25 to Trent Park, the home of the Southgate running club, shame all the runners come in cars on a Saturday morning, but that’s another story. This was another outing with a bare 11 but what an eleven, hand-picked to blend flare, speed, guile, age, stiffness, eloquence, endurance, obstinacy, inquisitiveness, sagacity, obfuscation, tenacity, decisiveness and all the other traits required of a vet! The game was always going to be tense as both sides are struggling for goals this year, but we made a good start with Bloomers, Tim M, Ian S and Stevie linking up well down the right and getting in behind their defence on 2 or 3 occasions. Hari, Speedie and Lloydy were working more down the left and the pressure gave us a couple of early short corners which we failed to convert. At the back Pali, Sudesh, VJ and Dave were coping with all that the opposition could muster and looked under no threat until a mis-timed clearance hit a foot and gave them their 1
st short corner, this was well taken, stopped and drilled
with un-erring accuracy at pace, although Sudesh did get something on it the deflection ending up in the net. This was definitely against the run of play, but a great strike so worthy of opening the score. This spurred the PMs on and not 5 minutes later Tim won the ball in the middle, fed Bloomers who placed a perfect pass into the path of Stevie coming in from his right wing. He skipped past 2 defenders along the line and played the ball across from Hari to score from close in. A great team goal. So half time was 1 -1 and the game was there for the taking. The 2
nd period was similar to the 1
st with the PMs
having 60% of the play. One lovely run from Bloomers saw him fouled, the only way they could stop him, but we failed to score from the chance created. 5 minutes later Tim M won the ball in the middle, exchanged passes with Steve on the right, got to the bye line and dribbled into the D, the ball, was pulled across the keeper for Speedie to get the touch and score with another close in shot to give us a 2 – 1 lead. We maintained the pressure and got a couple more short corners, from the second their keeper pulled off the save of the match but the PMs didn’t allow the Magnets to get out of their 25 and having won the ball back, Speedie found Lloydy close to the goal line. A vintage run along the line beating two defenders gave Llloydy the choice of
The EastcoNet 6 22nd February 2014
squaring to Hari/Steve or shooting – the keeper had already conceded 2 goals from crosses and this time tried to cut out the pass, only for Lloydy to beat him at his near post. A 2 goal cushion for the 1
st time in weeks.
The home team pressed in the last 10 minutes and had 2 short corners and two other clear opportunities from open play, but some heroic defending by Sudesh, VJ and Dave kept them at bay until into stoppage time when they scored a very late consolation goal. No man of the match this week as this was very much a team performance and a great 3 – 2 away win. “Màlmand”
Men’s 7’s v Amersham & Chalfont 4’s Saturday 15th February Won 7 – 1
Up Won A fantastic win over relegation rivals A+C moved the 7s off the bottom of the table for the first time this season. A number of subs proved the difference as the 7s simply wore down the opposition with fresh legs and movement. The first 10 minutes set the tone for the game with Eastcote passing and moving beautifully. A short corner resulted in a penalty stroke which Captain Chris popped past an immobile keeper. A second goal from Lew stretched the lead before A+C capitalised on some sloppy defending to pull one back. 2-1 at half time and a stern chat :) Early in the second half a driven ball into the D flicked off the A+C keepers pads and into the net; 3-1. The proceedings were wrapped up against a tiring opposition as Kushal (2), Anil and Joe Snell with a superb first goal for the team piled on the misery. A tricky game against Milton Keynes Samurai this weekend then another must win game against Windsor to come (and we've beaten them once already) Captain Chris
