Our Financial Literacy program continues to be a popular component

of the Professional Women’s Group. This year we introduced another way for women to gain the skills and knowledge to make empowered financial decisions – the Financial Literacy Boot Camp. On October 12th, 26 women attended an all-day event dedicated to empowering women through financial education. The Boot Camp included workshops on banking basics, budgeting, paying yourself first, smart borrowing and effective financial recovery strategies. By the end of the day, each participant had identified three financial goals. At the top of their lists was to track daily spending, open a savings account, and develop a budget – all indicators of financial literacy. The event was so well received, we plan to offer two Financial Literacy Boot Camps in 2014.

Every year Dress for Success Houston pairs members of our Professional Women’s Group with women mentors who generously share their professional experience and

wisdom. No special skills required, just an ability to listen and an interest in helping a woman succeed in her work and life. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a Women2Women mentor, contact Tiffany Harris at [email protected], 713.337.0878.

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pantsuitby PwG member vera l.

In the movie, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, four best friends separate for the

first time since birth. They share a pair of pants for the summer which magically fits them all. While the members of the Professional Women’s Group (PWG) might be only meeting each other for the first time, we are wearing pantsuits that fit each one of us perfectly. And from what I have experienced, Dress for Success Houston (DFSH) provides the magic. Six months ago, I was jobless, homeless, applying for food stamps and struggling to understand the bus system. I almost didn’t go to my appointment at DFSH. What would these women think of me? all i had were torn jeans and a bor-rowed backpack. However, when I walked in, it was a breath of fresh air. my wonder-ful volunteer picked clothes suited to my body and coloring, beautiful accessories and even gave me a shot of self-esteem that I didn’t know I needed. Looking in the mirror at this woman in a wonderful suit was like looking at myself for the first time. I could do this. I could get me, the good me, back. I just couldn’t do it alone. The confidence instilled from that first suiting appointment had me applying for jobs with a vengeance. If a com-plete stranger could believe in me, why couldn’t i? Eight staffing agencies and six

interviews later, it happened! I was offered a position as office manager at a successful non-profit organization. I was once again pleasantly surprised with DFSH at the PWG orientation and the meeting topic: Official and unofficial Rules of the Workplace. “We are here because we have a job to do,” the walls seemed to be saying, “and we are going to do it in the best-dressed and most informed way possible.” The class was interactive and inspiring. I fell in love all over again. What PWG offers is amazing; provid-ing women the opportunity to learn from one another and grow, truly becoming the sisterhood we are meant to be. And throughout our journeys, we will all have at least one pantsuit we can look back upon and smile.

October saw the launch of Dress for Success Houston’s much anticipated Child Watch Center. For many of the women we serve, lack of access to appropriate childcare prevents them from joining the Professional Women’s Group. Now, new and prospective PWG members with children 4- to 11-years old can attend PWG meetings confident that their children are in a fun and nurturing environment. many thanks to Dress for Success Houston volunteer kathy Eyring for her help in developing fun activities for the kids.

hOu♥DFS celebrated 15 years of services provided by Dress for Success Houston and the impact these programs have had in our community. The energy was palpable as nearly 400 supporters, passionate about our mission, gathered to celebrate 45,000 women served and their success stories.

This dynamic night, presented by marathon Oil Corporation for the 7th year, was chaired by Berthica Fitzsimons, Lindsay Holstead and Courtney Hopson and honored our Founding Board members. Auction Chair, virginia Steppe, helped raise a record $73,000 in our auction bringing the event grand total to $436,000!

The night was a foodie’s dream with culi-nary fare from 11 of Houston’s top female chefs led by A Fare Extraordinaire. Throughout the build-ing, party-goers grabbed bites at different food stations, captured memories in a photo booth and danced the night away with entertainment by local jazz musician kristine mills and DJ kalkutta from NYC.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORiTE

ExPERiENCE? I really enjoyed the mother’s Day Brunch. The whole day just warmed my heart. To listen to the women’s stories – it shows how we all want the same things out of life. We all want to be treated with dignity, respect; we want to take care of ourselves and our family and children. It gives you a wonderful outlook on life to know that someone has thought to do something this nice for someone else.

WHAT MOTiVATES YOU TO COME BACK

EACH WEEK? my volunteer experience has made me a kinder, more open-minded person. This whole experience is giving on both ends – not just what I give, but what the clients give to me. my friends and family have even noticed a change in me. volunteering has given my life a purpose.

WHiCH VOLUNTEERiNG ROLE DO YOU

ENJOY THE MOST? I like working the front desk. There I am able to see the transformation first-hand. When clients come in they usually have their heads hung down and are shy, quiet or even uncomfortable. But when they leave – with their suits in hand – their demeanors and attitudes change. They are smiling. Their heads are held high, they sometimes say, “I’m going to get this job.” Seeing that change in them is definitely the best part of my job.
