Green Bay Packaging and Yerecic LabelReceive TLMI Environmental Awards

At the association’s recent Annual Meeting Green Bay, Wisconsin-based Green Bay Packaging and New Kensington, Pennsylvania-based Yerecic Label each received TLMI Environmental Leadership Awards. This prestigious award recognizes one association supplier and one association converter member that have consistently demonstrated a commitment to progressive environmental practices across a range of areas including solid waste reduction, recycling, waste or energy recovery, the implementation of new ‘clean’ technology and/or processes, and the implementation of an education program.

Calvin Frost, TLMI Environmental Committee Chair, commented, “This is TLMI’s 12th year in presenting these awards. The awards were created in order to recognizecompanies that are demonstrating leadership in the implementation of environmental awareness and best sustainability practices in the North American label and packaging industries.I want to congratulate Green Bay Packaging and Yerecic Label for their high level of excellence in environmental stewardship. As brand owners and packaging buyerscontinue to enforce environmental transparency down the entire packaging supply chain, it is critical that industry converters and suppliers gain recognition for their commitment and the TLMI Environmental Awards and the association’s L.I.F.E. Certification program enable our members to do that very effectively.”

The Converter Award for Environmental Leadership was given to Yerecic Label, aconverter that has created a sustainability culture at every label of their organization by using the L.I.F.E. environmental management system as a guide to continuous improve-ment. The company remains an industry pioneer in the adoption and implementation of best sustainability practices and is currently one of the few 100% landfill-free operations in the North American marketplace. Yerecic Label has additionally reduced chemical

waste, replacing solvent platemaking with DuPont’s Cyrel system and all materials are recycled using DuPont’s TR-3 recycling program.

The Supplier Award for Environmental Leadership was given to Green Bay Packaging,a TLMI supplier member that created a “Green Team” more than a decade ago, enabling the company to continuously measure change over what Green Bay employees refer to as a “Decade of Sustainability Improvement.” Through a coordinated effort the com-pany’s Green Team defined waste streams that could be recycled, either traditionally or thermally, and over the course of 10 years byproduct sent to landfills has been reduced by 99%. Green Bay additionally installed a centrifuge to treat and reduce process waste water by 50%.

Both Yerecic Label and Green Bay Packaging have achieved TLMI L.I.F.E. (LabelInitiative for the Environment) Certification. L.I.F.E. is the only certification programtailored to the narrow web label and packaging industry.

TLMI announces that Jessica Harkins Harrell, Technologies Manager for Bryan-Ohio based Anderson & Vreeland, has been appointed Chairman of the TLMI Scholarship Committee. The TLMI Scholarship Committee oversees all the activities for the association’s three scholarship pro-grams; one for juniors and seniors at four-year colleges and universities, one for students attending junior and degree-granting technical colleges and one for the benefit of employees at TLMI member companies. TLMI scholarships are given with the intent to cultivate and encourage students’ interest in pursuing careers in the narrow web label and packagingindustries. Harrell will replace Jeff Dunphy, who has recently moved into his new role as association Chairman.

A recipient of a TLMI scholarship herself, Harrell initially found out about the program while attending the Graphics Communications Program of her alma mater, Clemson University. She comments, “It is an honor to be appointed as the newChairman of the TLMI Scholarship Committee. As a recipient of a TLMI scholarship in 1999, I know firsthand the positive impact the program has on college and university students who are considering careers in the package printing industry. At the time, I found out about the program by coming across a poster in the Communications Program Department at Clemson and I understand how important it is that we continue to get the word out and broaden the program’s exposure. These scholarships are a real asset to college students, and as recipients enter the industry they often work for TLMImember companies so the program is truly a mutually beneficial one.”

Oak Harbor, Ohio-based acpo, ltd. has recently become L.I.F.E. certified. The company is the 61st facility to achieve TLMI L.I.F.E. Certification.

The L.I.F.E. program was developed in order to assist TLMI members in finding cost effective ways to reduce their companies’ environmental footprint. L.I.F.E. is a program designed specifically for the narrow web marketplace and addresses four key elements of the narrow web printing and converting industry: clean production, energy and greenhouse gases, product and environmentally preferable materials, and management practices.

In market research TLMI has conducted within the brand owner and packaging buyer space over the past two years, nearly 50% of all companies surveyed stress the importance of environmental certification for their label vendors. One in 10 brand owners/packaging buyers cited that their label vendors must prove environmental compliance to remain a viable supplier. One in three brand owners/packaging buyers cited that their label vendors would have to demonstrate environmental compliance within the next two to three years. The pressure placed on label vendors to achieve sustainability compliance is moving environmental transparency down the supply chain and industry suppliers are increasingly prioritizing environmental certi-fication and best practices within their own four walls.

Jack Mitchell, Director of Sales and Marketing at acpo, commented, “We are pleased to join thosecompanies previously committed to sustainability. Project L.I.F.E. will help acpo elevate the environmental consciousness of our company. Being a manufacturer of self-wound overlaminates with water-basedadhesives, acpo has already made a commitment to ecologically sound processes that minimize negative environmental impacts. We will utilize this tool as another component in our continuous improvementefforts.”

The TLMI L.I.F.E. Program is the only certification platform tailored to the specific requirements of thenarrow web printing and packaging industry.

acpo ltd. is 61st Company to Receive TLMI L.I.F.E.® Certification
