All of these properties were in foreclosure, and most of the animals were injured, infected, dehydrated and starved nearly to death.

Abandoned pets increasingly are becoming victims of the struggling economy. In areas of the country hit hardest by the foreclosure wave, shelters are getting crowded, and in some cases owners abandon animals right along with the property

Problem Statement

With the crash of the housing market and high unemployment rates in Northern California, the cost of caring for pets is overwhelming for people. This leaves large numbers of pets in Northern California stranded and homeless. The lack of funding and boarding space in local shelters is leading to a huge number of animals being euthanized, along with neglect and abandoned animals right here in El Dorado, Placer and Sacramento Counties.
