My Whole Soul is in it

Lincoln said this about the Proclamation, “I never, in my life, felt more certain that I was doing right, than I do in signing this paper. If my name ever goes into history it will be for this act, and my whole soul is in it.”

The Death of a Hero

• Tragedy struck the country on Good Friday, April 14, 1865, when President Lincoln was assassinated at Ford’s Theater. John Wilkes Booth crept into the box at about 10 p.m. and aimed the gun between Lincoln’s left ear and spine. He fired the gun but no one up in the box heard the fatal shot that killed the president.
