July 2012
H ere it is, July already. Many of us are thinking of vacations,
backyard barbeques, and, another hot summer. (Hopefully not as hot as last year!) It is a good time to reflect on the many successes that we as a profession
have had. Think of the new techniques, materials and equipment that have made our profession better. I remember talking with my father about some of the new technology that is available to us. (Think of the current implant vs. the old blade implants). Keep in mind, that he started his practice in Austin in 1956. I did not think much of it at the time, but his comment was something to the effect that his life would have been much easier had he had some of the materials available to us today. Practicing in the era that we are in, we tend to take these things for granted. We must remember that this is a time in which we need to keep looking ahead to the future of dentistry. We have faced, and continue to face, many challenges to our profession. From the mercury issues, to fluoridation of public water supplies, to insurance companies and mid-level providers, we need to keep focused on presenting a strong, unified voice. This is why organized dentistry is so vital to us as a profession. It is here that the issues facing us today are quickly brought to light, and we can speak out in a unified voice for the good of our patients and profession. For your support of organized dentistry, I offer great thanks to the membership of CADS. But we must not forget the importance of our other voices, such as DENPAC and ADPAC. These two arms of our profession help to give us a say in the political arena.
Without them, onerous regulations may come down on us that would hamper our ability to treat our patients. Just as our founding fathers had to keep looking ahead, I urge each of our members to look at what they have, and not take it for granted. Consider becoming more active, either by serving on the Board, or donating to ADPAC and DENPAC. This is also why I want to have a survey of our membership—both older members and younger members. I want to find out what it is you like about our society, what should be added, what should be deleted, etc. With your help, we can make this an even stronger and more vibrant
dental society. We will be working on the details of how to conduct and word a survey that will be meaningful. At a recent Board meeting, one of our younger members mentioned that we are lagging behind in promoting ourselves via social media. Now, when I started dental school, as is the case with many of my peers, PC’s were not common. Now everybody has
one and is connected. I feel that this is one reason why a survey is vital for the health of CADS. It is far too easy to become detached from the present utilization of technology and to fall into ruts. When we send out the survey, please take the time to fill it out and give honest answers. I realize that it is impossible to please everybody, but with your help, we can achieve a good consensus on what will work for our society. Again, have a happy and safe Fourth of July, and if traveling this summer, be safe.
Sincerely,Thomas Wicheta, DDSCADS President

CADF Dentists Helping the Austin Music Scene – HAAM Pilot Program Extended
CADF Dentists are doing their part to keep Austin the “Live Music Capital of the World.” In 2011, CADF joined forces with the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM) in a pilot program to provide basic dental services to Austin musicians. In less than one year, CADF dentists have treated more than 450 HAAM patients. See one of those grateful patients, Vance Hazen, in a special video featured on our website.
www.capitalareadentalfoundation.org The pilot program with HAAM has been such a success that St. David’s Foundation recently approved funding to extend the program through December 31, 2012.
You Make It Happen So far, CADF has 26 dentists registered as HAAM providers. Participating providers care for patients in their own offices and receive discounted reimbursement for services provided.
CADF is looking for new providers, particularly those with offices
located in South and East Austin. If you are interested in learning more about the program or accepting new patients, please contact the CADF program coordinator, Charlotte Laguna at 512-971-8005 or [email protected].
