The Milton Rooms

The Milton Rooms aims to collaborate with established and emerging artists, to make Malton a hub of excellence for the arts, in all creative fields.

Run by a dedicated new team of artists and performers with a new Studio Theatre and plans already in place for new Artist's Studios, there is an ambitious program of events continuing on from the summer launch of 2011.

Built by the Fitzwilliam family in 1814 for the benefit of the residents of Malton and Norton the original, now Grade II listed, Subscription Rooms played host to society balls, town meetings, music recitals and more recently to sporting, social and church events. With the addition, in 1932, of the Milton Rooms Hall and Bar the buildings became the centre of community activity with local community performing societies staging their productions here.

Concept. When we were deciding what the play should be for our launch into the new Milton Rooms it was essential the community felt they had a stake in the building after years of neglect. And the play had to allow for that. The building has to belong to the community. By using 180 local people and allowing my imagination to embrace this beautiful market place- the only play with this capacity to include all these elements was A Midsummer Nights Dream by William Shakespeare.

June 5th, Rehearsal

As The Dream was to be moving as a promenade production through the snickets and alleyways of Malton, covering a huge area, it was an enormous task to rehearse each section in one place. So…. we borrowed a field. By using planks of wood and traffic cones, and narrowly avoiding the horse pooh we were able to mark up all of our locations.

To finally see the impact of the fairies marching toward us down our makeshift Shambles only served to highlight the enormous potential and theatricality of the piece.

June 4th- 5th, Rehearsals

All actors arrived at The Milton Rooms for what was to be one of the most exciting weekends Malton had witnessed. We found time to rehearse in St.Michaels Church (where the play would begin) and also sneak a few rehearsals in the square and other locations away from prying eyes of the local people. So the surprise would still be there for the audience. It was essential that the Sunday should feel as if the town had been hit by a flash mob.The Sunday was a relentless and exhausting process. We finished rehearsing the play within the play at 5.55pm and the show went up at 6pm.The scooters were on Standby. Fairies were costumed.Audience heading into the church.Me, blindly nervous.

June 5th, The Show

What a fantastic spectacle. This is the first time after all these months that all the actors were in the same place. After all the months of rehearsing in 3 different parts of the country with a cast of 180 and never being able to run the whole thing together to see it actually happen was moving and mesmerising. Our brilliant team of Chaperones, Traffic men, Stewards and stage managers pulled the whole thing together without a hiccup.I can still smell the fumes from the scooters as Oberon and Titania met for their show down at the foot of the Shambles.A vital and extraordinary piece of theatre.
