This is just an unbelievable period in our API, Kern County, oil industry and American history! Aſter no meengs for three months, we finally pulled off a dinner meeng for our members in June. We had pushed the scholarship meeng to July, thinking that we would be in good stead by July. And then the governor of the great state of California decided to shut down the economy of our state once again. He unilaterally closed down the restaurants in Bakersfield and thwarted our opportunity for a scholarship dinner for the deserving scholarship recipients. I will not spend me on the polics of the pandemic but will only advise you that we will not have our annual scholarship dinner in July. At this me, our board is working on an alternave to the dinner so that the students can get their scholarship checks, and we hope to be able to resume our normal method next year. The oil industry is connuing its roller coaster ride, but it is sll beer than it was three months ago. I even saw that CalGEM approved several permits for hydraulic fracturing work in South Belridge and Lost Hills, aſter Lawrence Livermore Labs gave them their stamp of approval. It only took a year to get approval on permits that used to take two weeks. Sad, but true, but this is the way of the oil industry in the golden state now. The next challenge that is facing the industry in California is the bill in the state legislature requiring a 2,500-foot setback from residences, schools, or other inhabited structures for oil and gas wells and facilies. That is half a mile from basically anything and will be the beginning of the end of our business if it passes. Please stay alert for a leer to the legislature that we will be sending out to our members in conjuncon with WSPA’s outreach. We at the SJV Chapter of API are opmisc and sll have some events planned for you. As you probably do not know, we have rescheduled our previously rescheduled annual golf tournament for October 23, 2020 and have our fingers crossed that we will be able to get together and do this event in October. Because of the governor’s recent shutdown of restaurants, bars, and anything fun, we have had to abandon our August date. Everybody that signed up for the golf tournament that was scheduled for May, is sll signed up for the October re-rescheduled event. We sll have our Fall Fun Shoot scheduled for October 2, 2020 and have the entry forms out right now. You can sign up for that event on our website here: 2020 Fall Fun Shoot. It may seem a lile early, but we are planning on it and hope that many of you will be able to sign up and join us for this fun event. I realize that hope, in and of itself, is not a plan, but without hope, we become hopeless. So, let us never lose hope in ourselves and our industry and our country. We will be back. I love to hear your feedback. Please feel free to call or email your comments or suggesons to (661) 330-0423, [email protected], or apibakersfi[email protected]. I look forward to seeing you all at the June General Meeng! Mike Handren 2020 API Chairman

A Message From The Chairman Hello, API Members!
This is just an unbelievable period in our API, Kern County, oil industry and American
history! After no meetings for three months, we finally pulled off a dinner meeting for
our members in June. We had pushed the scholarship meeting to July, thinking that we
would be in good stead by July. And then the governor of the great state of California
decided to shut down the economy of our state once again. He unilaterally closed down
the restaurants in Bakersfield and thwarted our opportunity for a scholarship dinner for
the deserving scholarship recipients. I will not spend time on the politics of the pandemic
but will only advise you that we will not have our annual scholarship dinner in July. At
this time, our board is working on an alternative to the dinner so that the students can
get their scholarship checks, and we hope to be able to resume our normal method next year.
The oil industry is continuing its roller coaster ride, but it is still better than it was three months ago. I even saw
that CalGEM approved several permits for hydraulic fracturing work in South Belridge and Lost Hills, after
Lawrence Livermore Labs gave them their stamp of approval. It only took a year to get approval on permits that
used to take two weeks. Sad, but true, but this is the way of the oil industry in the golden state now.
The next challenge that is facing the industry in California is the bill in the state legislature requiring a 2,500-foot
setback from residences, schools, or other inhabited structures for oil and gas wells and facilities. That is half a
mile from basically anything and will be the beginning of the end of our business if it passes. Please stay alert for a
letter to the legislature that we will be sending out to our members in conjunction with WSPA’s outreach.
We at the SJV Chapter of API are optimistic and still have some events planned for you. As you
probably do not know, we have rescheduled our previously rescheduled annual golf tournament for
October 23, 2020 and have our fingers crossed that we will be able to get together and do this event in
October. Because of the governor’s recent shutdown of restaurants, bars, and anything fun, we have
had to abandon our August date. Everybody that signed up for the golf tournament that was scheduled
for May, is still signed up for the October re-rescheduled event.
We still have our Fall Fun Shoot scheduled for October 2, 2020 and have the entry forms out right now.
You can sign up for that event on our website here: 2020 Fall Fun Shoot. It may seem a little early, but
we are planning on it and hope that many of you will be able to sign up and join us for this fun event.
I realize that hope, in and of itself, is not a plan, but without hope, we become hopeless. So, let us
never lose hope in ourselves and our industry and our country. We will be back.
I love to hear your feedback. Please feel free to call or email your comments or suggestions to (661) 330-0423,
The July SJVC-API scholarship awards dinner has been canceled once again due to our states concern regarding the possible increased spread of COVID-19. An email was sent out to all scholarship recipients regarding this matter along with alternate options to receive their award in a timely manner.
We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the success of the scholarship award program through your hard work and generous contributions!! Because your efforts, we will be awarding $115,000.00 to deserving students in our community this year.
If you should have any questions or concerns, please contact James McClard at (661) 304-5693 or [email protected].
We would like to acknowledge each student who will be receiving an award this year.

Corporate Sponsorships
As part of API’s mission to give back to our local community through college scholarships for those pursuing petroleum based degrees and other local educational programs, API has created a corporate sponsorship package that includes membership and tickets to our annual events. We want to thank Chevron SJBU for being API’s third corporate sponsor and look forward to seeing their employees at our future events. There are several sponsor packages available for each business to decide what is best for them. We look forward to signing more up in the months to come. If you have any questions, please reach out to the API at [email protected]
