Good Beginnings of Central Vermont 2015-2016 Annual Report

A Helping Hand. Respite. Caring Connections to Community. Simple yet invaluable gifts at a time when families’ emotional, social, physical, and financial resources may be stretched to the max. Your support makes this possible! In the six months since joining Good Beginnings, I can’t count how often I’ve been told that “My Good Beginnings volunteer was amazing! I don’t know what I would have done without her.” For twenty five years, throughout Central Vermont, our volunteers have made lasting impressions on families during the tender transition to parenthood. Although this year was a time of bittersweet transition – we bid farewell to my predecessor as ED, Alison Lamagna -- I look forward to building on her legacy in the coming years. I am also grateful for GBCV’s phenomenal staff and board, for our passionate, dedicated volunteers, and for our many, many supportive donors and community partners. You are the heart and soul of this amazing organization! With gratitude,

In Memoriam…

Dean Howe (1946-2016)

Dean Howe, the husband of co-founder Terry Howe, was a quiet, kind, and supportive presence at

countless Good Beginnings events. Always ready to lend a hand, he helped sustain the organization

during its formative years. We mark his passing in 2016 with both

appreciation and sadness.

-Sara Nevin, Founder

A pregnant mom in recovery, whose previous births had been traumatic, was referred to our Postpartum Angel program. We matched her with a Good Beginnings volunteer who is also a trained doula and life coach to help her prepare for birthing. The volunteer visited with her multiple times before the birth and even made a relaxation tape for her. The mom had a great birth experience, which she attributes to the support of her volunteer.

Our Postpartum Angels: A HELPING HAND at a TENDER TIME

Good Beginnings of Central Vermont 2015-2016 Annual Report

A new dad with limited financial resources unexpectedly found himself parenting alone due to his partner’s struggle with mental illness. Good Beginnings provided ongoing financial and parenting assistance to support him in his role as sole caregiver for his infant. This father is now an active, engaged caregiver whose Good Beginnings assistance helped build his confidence in his ability to provide for his child.

“My volunteer was wonderful and easy

to get to know…a life saver! It was so

helpful to have her to hold the baby…and [allow me] one on one time with my 3

1/2 year old. It was a huge relief.”

The Nest: A HOME AWAY FROM HOME For FAMILIES Out On The Town

This winter, The Nest relocated to a ground-floor location in our building. The bright, airy space is also more ‘drop-in’ friendly – no more hauling strollers and car seats up a flight of stairs!

Good Beginnings provided 40 hours of round-the-clock cuddling for a baby with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome. Our volunteer also provided emotional support for the overwhelmed mom, forming a bond that enabled her to help with the transition back home from the hospital.
