A Message from the Dean
We all understand that these are difficult economic times andfiscal challenges are not unique to Louisiana. Medical schools and institutes of higher learning throughout the country are facingsimilar challenges. Access to a strong public education systemcreates opportunity and growth for all of our citizens. This isparticularly important when it comes to medical education in Louisiana, where the vast majority of health care professionals are trained within theLSU system. Furthermore, our economic future will be built on afoundation of innovation and creativity that will be knowledge-based andcan only succeed if we enjoy a robust and vibrant education system that all of our students can access. We have taken great strides forward inadvancing the three core missions of our school – research, clinical care, education and training – during these past few years. We are expandingour research efforts and have significantly increased extramural funding. We continue to serve the uninsured and under-insured as we havethroughout our history. We have a new multispecialty enterprise locatedon St. Charles Avenue and have grown our yearly patient visits fourfold.Applications for our school are at their highest level and we continue toattract Louisiana’s best and brightest to our institution. As we continueour drive for excellence we welcome the Governor’s support, which willbenefit all of Louisiana.
Sincerely,
Steve Nelson, MD, DeanLSUHSC School of Medicine

The New Orleans Saints will be playing Sunday, and if you have tickets and it’s a home game, you can simply walk to theMercedes-Benz Superdome or watch the game in Champions Square. The schedule won’t be out until early spring.
Our goal this year is to have each class purchase at least onetable. Call some classmates and reserve a table or two. Eachtable seats ten.
The Gala will be bigger and better in 2012. The profit will be used to support medical school alumni activities and ourstudents – the future of medical care in Louisiana.

Tumor Registry at LSUHSC Earns Top Honor
The Louisiana Tumor Registry atthe LSUHSC-NO School ofPublic Health is one of four cancer registries in the National CancerInstitute’s Surveillance,Epidemiology and End Results(SEER) Program earning a 2011First Place Data Quality ProfileAward. The SEER Program is themost authoritative source ofinformation on cancer incidenceand survival in the United States.
The SEER Program evaluates thequality of data from each registryevery year. Last year 16 measureswere selected for evaluation, including the estimatedcompleteness of cases (forcomputing incidence rate), percent unknown or missing for keydemographic and tumor variables, and follow-up rates (for calculating survival). Of the 17 SEERregistries in the United States, only 4 met all 16 data quality goals setby the National Cancer Institute.
This is the third time LSUHSC’sLouisiana Tumor Registry hasearned a First Place Award and the second consecutive year.
“This honor not only recognizesthe commitment to high quality of my staff here at the LSUHSCSchool of Public Health, but thededicated efforts of the staffs of the regional registries and hospitalregistries throughout the statewith whom we collaborate,” notesDr. Vivien Chen, Professor andDirector of the Louisiana TumorRegistry at LSU Health SciencesCenter New Orleans School ofPublic Health.
The primary function of a cancerregistry is to record the occurrence of cancer in a population.Information collected includesdemographic data, tumor type, stage of disease, and treatment.Information on risk factors isusually not available from the
reporting sources. However, datafrom the registry often providesclues to be pursued in specialresearch studies conducted byqualified scientists with externalfunding.
The SEER Program collects cancerincidence and survival data from 17population-based cancer registriesin the United States. It isconsidered to be the standard forquality among cancer registriesaround the world. Quality controlhas been an integral part of SEERsince its inception.
Cancer is a reportable disease in theState of Louisiana. Hospitals, private pathology laboratories, radiation centers and health careproviders who diagnose or treatcancer are required by law to report the cancer cases to the LouisianaTumor Registry which was

Research Discovers Potentially Deadly FungusSenses Body’s Defenses to Evade ThemGlen Palmer, PhD, AssistantProfessor of Microbiology,Immunology & Parasitology atLSUHSC-NO, was part of aninternational research team led by Luigina Romani, MD, at theUniversity of Perugia, thatdiscovered opportunistic fungilike Candida albicans can sensethe immune status of host cellsand adapt, evading immunesystem defenses. Unlike previousstudies, this research investigatedboth sides of the infectionequation as well as the interaction between the fungi and the cellsthey will invade. The findings arepublished online in NatureCommunications in the mostrecent articles section (February21, 2012).
This study demonstrates that thisprocess is much more elaborateand complex than previouslyunderstood. The researchersdetermined that C. albicans bindsto the host immune signalingmolecule, Interleukin (IL) 17A,which permits the fungus tonavigate and tolerate the activeimmune environment of healthyhost tissue, mounting effectivecountermeasures. IL-17A mayalso contribute to diseasesusceptibility by modifying theintrinsic virulence of the fungus. This study provides molecularevidence that by exploiting
IL-17A, the fungus not onlysurvives, but can cause disease todevelop.
“It’s a bit like the fungus islistening in to the conversationsour immune system is having so it can best determine how to reactand survive in our tissues. Thismay also be a crucial step indetermining when thisopportunist decides to invadehost tissue and causelife-threatening disease in animmunosuppressed patient,”notes Dr. Palmer.
According to the Centers forDisease Control and Prevention, there are more than 20 species ofCandida yeasts that can causeinfection in humans, the mostcommon of which is Candidaalbicans. Candida yeasts normallylive on the skin and mucousmembranes without causinginfection; however, overgrowthof these organisms can causesymptoms to develop. Symptomsof candidiasis vary depending onthe area of the body that isinfected. Candidiasis thatdevelops in the mouth or throat is called “thrush” or oropharyngealcandidiasis. Candidiasis in thevagina is commonly referred to as a “yeast infection.” Invasivecandidiasis occurs when Candidaspecies enter the bloodstream and
spread throughout the body.Candidemia (a bloodstreaminfection with Candida), isextremely rare in peoplewithout risk factors, but it isthe fourth most commonbloodstream infection amonghospitalized patients in theUnited States.
“Disrupting or manipulatingthe fungal sensing of thesehost molecules could trick thefungus, essentially suppressingan infection, or enabling us toeliminate this potentiallydangerous fungus before itcauses problems,” concludesDr. Palmer.
The research team alsoincluded scientists from theUniversity of Perugia, Perugia, Italy, University Complutense, Madrid, Spain, University ofLausanne, Switzerland,University of Göttingen,Göttingen, Germany, andInstitut Pasteur, Paris, France.
This work is supported by theSpecific Targeted ResearchProject ALLFUN and by theFondazione per la Ricerca sulla Fibrosi Cistica.

Greetings to All, The times, they remain interesting if not also entertaining. As we findourselves immersed in the mundane politics leading up to the Novemberelection, Israel and Iran are locked in a terse struggle pertaining to Iran’snuclear development strategy. The Euro apparently will survive while the US
debt knows no bounds.
Nevertheless, your alumni board presses forward in significantly reducing its debtrelative to the Center for Advanced Practice. Simultaneously the board memberscontinually embrace the future for additional undertakings. At our last meetingMark Juneau (’73) eloquently spoke of our need for a mission or undertakingthat keeps us focused on new and expanding projects. I could not agree more.
On behalf of the LSU Medical Alumni Association I extend an enthusiasticappreciation to all who worked so fervently at making the last Purple and GoldGala a huge success. To all who made contributions and for those who attended, many thanks as well. Don’t forget to mark your calendar for the 7th Annual Purpleand Gold Gala slated for October 19, 2012, at the Hyatt Regency New Orleans.Vince Vance and Valiants will perform.
Please remember the reunions scheduled for this summer on June 8-9th 2012.Members of Classes ’46, ’52, ’55, ’57, ’62, ’67, ’72, ’77, ’82, ’87, ’92, ’97, and’02 will be recognized.

Dear All,
I am pleased to report that your Alumni Office is keepingbusy. Our generous alumni continue to support the Schoolof Medicine with contributions to various professorships, chairs and scholarships. Recently, I was contacted by afamily member who wanted to raise funds to start ascholarship in his brother’s name, Mike Wheelis (’87), as acelebration of Mike’s 50th birthday. What a fabulous way tocelebrate the occasion and honor a medical student.
The Alumni Office has been actively involved in support ofseveral medical-student projects, including the Student Run Homeless Clinics,Camp Tiger, Match Day Activities, and an Awards Ceremony for the RuralTrack Students.
In many ways, the School of Medicine is stronger than ever, although constantbudget threats remain. The quantity and quality of medical school applicantsare higher than ever and our students continue to match for residencies at somevery prestigious training programs.
Reunion weekend will be held on Friday and Saturday, June 8 and 9, and willhonor the classes of ’46, ’52, ’55, ’57, ’62, ’67, ’72, ’77, ‘82, ’87, ’92, ’97, and’02. The Scientific Session on June 9 will feature topics eligible for CME. TheCommittee of 100 – Champions of Excellence Banquet will be held onThursday, June 7.
Our Annual Fall Gala is scheduled for Friday, October 19, 2012, and will bethemed “LSU Second Lines to the Super Bowl in New Orleans.”
As always, thanks for your support. Please feel free to call or stop by this officewhen you are in town. I would love to show you around the campus.
