President, Westchester Arc

Dear Fellow Parents and Friends,

We are delighted to welcome you this evening. Now in its seventh year, A Matter of Taste has become a much-anticipated event that brings us new friends and has netted more than $550,000 for programs to serve people with disabilities.

The funds we raise this evening help ensure that services such as early childhood education, guardianship, recreation, and job placement are financially sound, now and in the future. Thank you for being here this evening and for helping those who rely on our services to realize their dreams.

As we approach the end of the year, we are thankful for Ric Swierat and his dedicated leadership and for the successes that we see every day at Westchester Arc. Let’s continue to be as generous as we can be so that the people we serve achieve their goals and can continue to cultivate their talents, make choices, and serve their communities.

Sincerely,

Sheryl R. Frishman, Esq.President, Westchester Arc

Dear Friends,

Welcome!

First of all, a very large thank you for joining us at our 7th A Matter of Taste — andI am sure our best and most enjoyable at an exciting new venue.

Thanks also to everyone who made this wonderful event possible, especially Peter Herrero, Adrienne Arkontaky and their hardworking committee.

Tonight we celebrate people who make a great difference in our community and our world – Steve Palm and the Manzi Family. They have made remarkable efforts and remarkable sacrifices to make the lives of many people better and they deserve our admiration and applause. I personally am in awe of their accomplishments.

This evening, enjoy the food, the wine and the camaraderie but please also take the time to meet Steve and the members of the Manzi Family and offer your personal thanks for all they have done.

Sincerely,

“People with disabilities will have a better chance to develop work skills, thanks to a substantial donation to complete the purchase and renovation of a Mount Kisco building that will be used as a vocational center.” So read the first line of a Gannett Newspaper article on June 20, 1996. This extraordinary support resulted in the creation of the Ann Manzi Center and in several hundred adults being given

opportunities they might not otherwise have had to live more independent and productive lives.

The Manzi family has been associated with Westchester Arc for many decades. Dr. Walter Manzi, who passed away earlier this year, Mrs. Manzi (Ann), and their children, Karen, Joe, John and Jim are an exceptionally close family. Ann describes those early years when Karen was a child and a group of six families met to travel-train their children to take a train from Mt. Vernon to White Plains and back again so that they could go to the first Westchester Arc workshop on Hillside Avenue. Their dedication preceded the days when education for all children was mandatory. “Supports took so long to come,” Ann remembers.

Ann has been in leadership positions with Westchester Arc for many years, serving on the board for several terms and chairing the Adult Services subcommittee in Mount Kisco, which began in 1988.

There are at present more than 300 consumers in vocational, day treatment and day training who receive services out of the Ann Manzi Center. The Person-Centered Planning philosophy guides the process. In addition to employment opportunities, the Ann Manzi Center offers clinical, nutritional and psychological services.

Karen works onsite as a valued member of the staff. She works as a clerical assistant, performing a variety of tasks—keeping track of supplies, obtaining materials, making copies as needed.

Joe, John and Jim have been generous with their gifts of financial support and time. Joe was one of the original Board members of the Westchester Arc Foundation and, with Steve Palm, founded A Matter of Taste seven years ago. John serves on the board of Community Living Corporation, which manages Karen’s residence. Jim’s generosity made the Ann Manzi Center a reality.

“We will always be involved with Westchester Arc,” says Ann.

Steven Palm not only has the recipe for success at the helm of his well known Westchester Restaurants, Underhills Crossing in Bronxville and Harrys of Hartsdale in Hartsdale, but he brings the same hard work ethic, enthusiasm and caring to his volunteer work with many charitable organizations.

Biagio “Bud” Malfetano, a former Eastchester High School attendance officer, once knew Steven as a student who arrived late on more than one occasion. He watched Steven mature into a caring, successful young man who adds many hours to his day giving back to his community. “Bud” was very proud to see Steven assume his former role as president of the Bronxville

Helen Keller Lion’s Club. Steven has chaired events for Heartsong, a music and art therapy program for children with disabilities; The Counseling Center, The Westchester Arts Council, Jansen Memorial Hospice and The American Red Cross as well as being a major sponsor of The Community Fund. Steven is on the Board of Directors of The Bronxville Chamber of Commerce and has given his time and what seems like endless energy and financial assistance to numerous organizations.

Steven has said, “Growing up I did not have monetary wealth, but I have always had the wealth of love and support of family and friends. I am fulfilling and living a dream that I never, ever expected to live. If I am able to fulfill other people’s dreams, to possibly help someone not as privileged as I am, then it is my pleasure.”

Westchester Arc is one of the organizations close to Steven’s heart. Seven years ago Steven, along with Dr. Joseph Manzi, founded, co-chaired and orchestrated A Matter of Taste, an event that features signature dishes from Westchester’s most celebrated restaurants. The first event was a huge success with over 200 attendees. Now in its seventh year, the guests at A Matter of Taste have a great time while raising money for this very worthy cause.
