A Level Music Transition Workbook
Course Overview:
Component 1: Appraising Music
+ Component 2: Performance
+ Component 3: Composition
This is an exam paper
split into three sections:
Listening Analysis
Essay writing
The first section will be on three areas of
study, Western Classical, Musical
Theatre and Jazz.
The second section focuses on Western
Classic.
The essay will focus
on Jazz.
Your performance will
be recorded in Year 13 but you will be
assessed throughout the course to ensure
you reach the required standard.
The performance will
need to last around 12 minutes and where
possible around 50% of the material should
be Grade 7.
However, accuracy
and expression in the performance is more
important than the grade of the pieces.
You will complete a
functional harmony brief set by AQA, in
the form of a Bach Chorale.
You will also complete
a free choice composition, with
guidance from your teachers.

Areas of Study Below are the areas of study for the exam. The artists in bold for Jazz are the ones you will focus on for the essay.
We choose Jazz for the essay in the exam, as it consistently scores good marks due to the ensembles being smaller
and the musical features being complex enough to allow for easy analysis.
