Last Saturday 2 middle school boys did that very thing when they plugged a toilet off of the old gym and flooded the building. Juniors and seniors recently attended the College Fair hosted by the Uni-

versity of Montana. You never know what you will find out when you

check out a college. For example, did you know that Utah Valley Uni-

versity gives residency tuition to out-of-state students who have a GPA

of 3.3 and an ACT score of 24? Each college has unique standards and

their own scholarships too! Visit your colleges of interests’ web site.

SENIORS, Right now is the time to:

Register to take the ACT/SAT (some scholarships require scores

prior to December 31, 2014)

Dates available to take before the end of 2014:

ACT:

December 13th: Register by November 7th for no late fee

(Nov 8-21, $23 late fee).

SAT

November 8th: Register by October 9th for no late fee

(by October 24th, $27.50 late fee).

December 6th: Register by November 6th for no late fee

(by November 24th, $27.50 late fee).

The majority of scholarships offered are through local and colleges/

universities. Check out school web sites and look into their scholar-

ships offered.

If you are interested in attending an out of state school, check the

school’s website to see if it participates in the Western Undergradu-

ate Exchange (WUE). This is a scholarship that awards out of

state students college tuition at a reduced rate of up to 150% tuition

(For example, if residents pay $4000, a non-resident would pay

$6,000). This is a big savings! Each school has differing eligibility

criteria and often limits enrollment (usually first-come, first-served

basis). Start looking today

Old Outsized School Shoes for Africa

Once your back to school shopping is fin-ished, you may be wondering what to do with shoes from last year that no longer fit. Well, you're in luck because the Florence Carl-ton Community Church is looking for stur-dy, used shoes that still have some wear and tear left in them to donate to needy Africans who desperately need shoes. All sizes and types of shoes (adult sizes too) will be gladly accepted! Please be assured that any boots or shoes deemed not appropriate for Africa will be do-nated to local families and/or Missoula Good-will. Just drop them off in the bin at Jody's office in the Elementary building. This is a wonderful way to give and get rid of some old shoes at the same time. So far we estimate we have collected over 500 pairs of shoes and are nearing a thousand thanks to this community's generosity! Thank you! If you have any questions, please call Susan Miller at 273-4684.

Federal grant monies for our school is based off our free and reduced hot lunch participation numbers. The higher our percentage of free and re-duced participates the more federal funding that becomes available to our district. Free and reduced applicants are an integral part of Florence-Carlton Food Service, Title One, and E-Rate programs. Florence-Carlton School is concerned that children who are eligible to receive a free or reduced price meal, are not participat-ing in the program. By taking a few minutes to fill out an application, you may be helping your children and school. You May Clip Out & Return This Application: To apply for free or reduced price meals for your child complete this application & return it to the District Office. If you need help filling out this form, please con-tact Louise Warila at 273-6751 ext. 101.

Welcome to the Jungle

We, Jack Finlay and the entire Finlay Family, would like to thank

Florence Carlton Schools and the Florence community for participat-

ing in the ALS Ice Bucket FUNdraiser!

We would like to give a special thank you to Lisa Verlanic, Lois

Horsens, Key Club, National Honor Society and all other behind-the-

scenes workers, for without you, this surely could not have been such

a success!

During this journey, we’ve learned a lot about what it means to have

support, and, you the Florence community, have been our corner-

stone. Not only was this event beyond astounding, but also every-

thing you’ve done for us throughout the years has been awe-inspiring.

We would like to extend our gratitude for a lifetime’s worth of sup-

port.

We are asking everyone in the Florence community to come and walk for

Jack Finlay. On Saturday, October 4, 2014 at McCor-

mick Park, there will be a 2.5 mile walk to help fight

Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The walk will start at 11:00 am.

Bring your friends

The Montana Department of Transportation is hosting an open house on Oct. 7th at the

Florence Carlton School. To be discussed is a proposal to rebuild a portion of Second-

ary 203 (the East Side Hwy) from the new round-about to Ambrose Creek

Road. Please come to voice your support for extending the new bike/walking path

along the East Side Highway from Hidden Valley to Ambrose Road. If this trail were

constructed it would connect with the existing trails in Florence, and be a wonderful,

healthful, and safe amenity for all local and touring bicyclists in addition to our

students.

The meeting - (10/7) - is to be in the District Conference building 5 pm for display pe-

rusal and 6:30 for the presentation. Plan to attend and bring a friend. If you can't attend

contact MDOT at http://www.mdt.mt.gov/mdt/comment_form.shtml or by surface

mail to Ed Toavs District Administrator, P O. Box 7039 Missoula, MT 59807-

7039 . Please state that Florence supports the use of, and need for future use of the Mis-

soula to Lolo trail and all other non-motorized pathways.
