Mount Eliza Secondary College is a medium sized co-educational, single campus secondary college of approximately 800 students. It is situated on the Mornington Peninsula, approximately a 50 minute drive or train trip from Melbourne. It is located nearby to Monash University, Peninsula Campus. The school is just five minutes’ walk away from a lively town centre and two kilometers from the local beach and yacht club at Davey’s Bay.
The suburb of Mount Eliza is the gateway to the beautiful Mornington Peninsula, close to Victoria’s premier tourist attractions: Philip Island and its famous penguin colony, vineyards, markets, national parks, many surf beaches and the cosmopolitan Main Street of Mornington.
Mount Eliza is a safe, comfortable and established suburb in which many professional families choose to live and raise their children. Many local residents are involved with water sports such as surfing and sailing as well as bushwalking, horse riding and sightseeing. It provides the best of both worlds being close to both the sandy coastal beaches of Port Phillip Bay and the modern, multicultural city of Melbourne, the second largest city in Australia.
A modern and innovative teaching and learning environmentMount Eliza Secondary College is a leading school in Victoria with the use of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) immersed throughout all teaching programs. The school utilizes technologies such as interactive white boards during lessons to engage students in their learning and many classrooms have been specially designed and equipped with the latest technologies. Our students receive personalised learning that is supported by Ipads, Netbooks, Ebooks and innovative programs including MyED. Technology is embedded in a curriculum that encourages the development of skills such as independent thinking and team skills which are essential for the success of students in a global and internationalized world.
A comprehensive curriculum that provides academic rigor and extends the creative talents of all studentsMount Eliza Secondary College’s comprehensive educational program offers a wide range of subjects in all years. Our extensive VCE program provides a full range of VCE subjects which include traditional subjects such as Mathematics, Sciences, Commerce and Humanities, complemented by Outdoor and Physical Education, Music, Drama, Dance, Theatre Studies, Graphic Communication and Studio Arts, Ceramics and Photography. Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses are also offered. There are opportunities to perform in school bands and orchestras, concerts, theatre, the annual musical and participate in interschool debating competitions.
Support at every levelTo ensure that the individual learning needs of students are met the college is divided into three sub-schools: junior, middle and senior. Small groups of students are cared for by a special teacher who acts as a mentor to the students, as well as by year level coordinators, a student welfare coordinator, a career’s counselor and school nurse. Our new International students are offered a subject called International Personal Development. This subject allows the student to gain local knowledge about the environment, history, current events and the Australian lifestyle. It includes visiting local sites of significance.
By providing a caring environment each student is given the support and guidance necessary for success and this has contributed to the school’s strong tradition of academic excellence with an annual pass rate of 98% and a high record of student entry into university courses.
English as an Additional Language (EAL) ProgramThe English Language Center offers a warm and caring environment to our international students. Our specialist English (EAL) teachers are also trained and experienced in supporting international students to adapt to school life in a new culture. The EAL intensive language program for new students provides formal English instruction to develop students’ English proficiency skills in preparation for VCE and is designed to provide students with a solid foundation for academic success.
EAL courses include:
• EAL intensive (usually 20 weeks) for new arrivals;
• Intensive language support for those students experiencing difficulties in their mainstream subjects; and VCE EAL English at Years 11 & 12 level.
The International ProgramThe International Coordinator oversees the enrolment and orientation of new students. Together with the Homestay Coordinator and other specialist teachers who speak languages such as Mandarin, German and Indonesian, the needs of all international students are taken care of. Regular close contact is maintained between the school and the overseas parents to inform them of the academic progress and achievements of their son or daughter. The International Coordinator monitors the progress of international students and organizes extra tutoring and support when required. The homestay coordinator manages a high quality homestay program involving carefully selected local Australian families so that international students live in the best possible environment to support their studies.
Special ProgramsExtra-curricular ProgramAn extensive extra-curricular program offers international students the chance to participate in camps, excursions, drama and school musical productions, debating teams, sporting events, and social events. These include a Northern Territory camp for Year 11 students, the annual Debutante Ball, Valedictory Dinner and work experience. Excursions to visit universities such as Melbourne and Monash University are organized for international students as well as excursions to the local area.
Specialist tutoring program and afterschool homework programSpecialist language teachers provide academic support during classes and special tutorials where needed for international students. An afterschool homework program is staffed by teachers to provide students with extra assistance in their studies. Extra tuition is available after school in most subjects.
