Health 101: Wha t a r e y o u Ea t in g?

FACTS:Health and diet-related diseases

outweigh drug-related deaths 20

times over.

We spend $71 bil l ion annually

on research for diabetes, cancer,

heart disease, and stroke.

Cleaning your room is not the only type of spring cleaning you should do this year. It is important to tidy up the bed and maintain a floor you can actually walk upon, but cleansing the body is also a very important task. Eating the right foods can do wonders for your body, including improving brain function and obtaining healthier looking skin. When your mother told you to grow big and strong by eating your fruits and vegetables, she wasn’t kidding. In order to cleanse your body and maintain a healthier lifestyle, thinking green is the way to go. Fruits and vegetables contain various vitamins that assist in lower-ing blood pressure, improving vision, and even increasing your body’s ability to develop brain cells. If you feel that you are lacking in any of the categories for a healthier life, check out the list below for some of the more common sce-narios people face today.

H e a lt hie r L i f e !Live a

Problem: I think that my vision is get-ting blurry, and my skin isn’t as clear as I’d like.Solution: Eat more foods with vitamins A and C. These promote smoother courses for your body’s functions, including helping out with your internal immune system, blood circulation, and breathing. Examples of foods: red bell peppers, carrots, milk, and spinach.

Problem: I’m always tired. Solution: If you’re constantly yawning and feel-ing weary, it’s best that you stay away from foods with too much sugar. Try abstaining from reach-ing for that bag of cookies after school.

Problem: My blood pressure is too high. Solution: Stay away from consuming too much salt in your diet. Sodium chloride in excess will lead to high blood pressure, which will result in a greater chance of suffering from heart attacks and/or other heart failure issues. Hypertension is also responsible for loss of vision and severe kidney failure.

This year, spend some time on yourself and try going for a healthier lifestyle. Next time you eat make sure to choose wisely!

Goodbye Microsoft WindoWs

Operating systems, namely software that al-lows a user to interact with the various components of the computer (e.g. monitors, printers), are at the heart of every computer. Microsoft Windows has always been the most common operating system in the computer market. However, it is certainly not the only one in existence. Two other operating systems include the Macintosh OS and Linux. There has recently been a new contender in the

operating system market. Google announced its own version of Linux distribution in July 2009, known as Chromium OS. Light in terms of computer memory usage, this operating system is completely based upon the web and is well suited toward netbooks. Chromium is extremely unique in that all data is stored online, and all programs are basically minia-ture apps that can be downloaded for free. To try this highly versatile operating system out for yourself, follow these steps.

Go to the following website and download Google Chrome. Choose “Download Google Chrome OS Linux RC (x86) Live CD.” http://getchrome.eu/download.php Save it on your hard drive. Insert a blank CD into your computer. Choose “burn the program to the CD” option, which, if your op-erating system is currently Windows Vista, will pop up the instant the USB is inserted. Leave the CD in the computer and reboot. You need to change your BIOS setting on your computer to “boot from CD at startup.” After this is complete, the Google Chrome OS will load. EN-JOY!

Exempt from Extinction

Global warming, the increase in the average temperature of the earth’s surface, is an

approaching storm on a growingly bleak horizon, a storm that has been building for almost three

centuries. We have inherited the global warming problem and no longer can we afford to ignore

it.

It began with the Industrial Revolution, an economic and technological movement that

has transformed almost every aspect of life, creating the modern world we live in now. It began

with ideas that would resurrect humanity from the Dark Ages as people who were so desperate

for the light it illuminated did not stop to consider the consequences. We do not have that excuse.

The world is again changing. Glaciers that have stood for millennia are disappearing.

Global temperatures are fluctuating. Mass extinction of animals has already begun. As humans,

we too are animals, and who are we to think that we are above extinction?

In a technology dependent world, society has become addicted to fossil fuels and instant

gratification. A problem that will mature decades from now may seem intangible and non-

threatening. Nevertheless, we are equipped with the technology to slow or even stop global

warming, and what we lack are human catalysts, with the well-being of future generations in

mind, ready to embrace change.

CLUBECO By: Emily Manasian

With increased industrialization and trash lying everywhere, the earth could use a good friend every now and then. The 22 members that make up the Ecology Club intend to be this devoted friend! Ecology Club has devoted its time to spreading awareness, as well as spending hours of free time volunteering, all with the intention of improving the environ-ment. Club co-president Aileen Chang, senior, had very positive

words regarding the club. “Our club has been productive. We planted some flowers last year, recently planted a tree by the A building, and attended composting classes...and there’s only more to come! Eco Club is also entering our school in a competition, as well as planning to ad-dress our school’s trash problem in an upcoming campaign. Let’s go Conquerors! Let’s do our part and help out!”

Club Spotlight

Along with a general awareness of the environment, the club’s main motive is to spread the desire to recycle throughout campus. Recycling bins have been placed in many teachers’ classrooms and are emptied by club members each week. The funds raised are used to purchase more bins as well as plants to be planted around the school. The club also intends to eventually branch out and make recycle bins available to students during lunch.

8

Another ongoing project they have is adding biodiversity to not only the school, but to the com-munity. “is year we took a tour of Bentley Prince Street, an eco-devoted carpeting company, allowing our members to learn about industrial ecology. We have also hosted a river clean-up where we got together to improve a local river. For the remainder of the year, we plan on promoting more recycling at school, a beach clean-up, and another on-campus planting as well as a few more events,” commented Tony Flores, senior and club co-president.

Flores added, “I would like to give a special thanks to my co-president, Ai-leen Chang, all the officers, our dedicated members, and to Luz Torres, science, for going above and beyond as our advisor. I know this club will continue to grow over the years, and I am grateful to have led it this year.”

Creativity, Personaltiy, Design, Character, PassionLos Altos offers many different performing arts on campus. Each activity provides its own creative flare and personality. Students can express whatever passion they may have including music, song, dance, and anything inbetween. Perform-ing arts allows students the oppor-tunity to be a part of campus life.

Drama immerses the mind in char-acter and personality as students become someone else. Drama puts on plays and skits throughout the year to entertain students as well as the community. This year’s shows included “Improv Night”, and the very successful “Mouse Trap”. Instructor: Eva Shin

Tying the necklace

Braiding the neck-lace in your hair will give it texture. This is a similar technique to the ribbon braid; how-ever, a necklace can make the braid more wearable and stand out.

Overlapping the necklace and wrap-ping it around your head can add intri-cacy, yet simplicity to your hair. It’ is also a quick fix for a bad hair day.

Spring is the season to take some risks and try new things. It is a time to let the sun shine on your face and allow your beauty to truly radiate. And the best way to do that is to mix things up and play with your hair a little bit.

Spring Cleaning 1. Clean out your wardrobe Sort out clothes you’ve outgrown or do not plan to wear. Be sure to donate these clothes. Do not throw them away. Now fold and organize what’s left. An article of clothing lasts longer when folded.

When spring rolls around, the weather is different, the mood is different, and by this time, your home looks different. Doing some spring cleaning will help you enjoy the new season even more when you spend time in your

“sanctuary.”

2. Clean your desk By this time, you prob-ably have a lot of old home-work and classwork from first semester piled on your desk. Recycle the paper or just throw it away if your nearest recycling center does not ac-cept paper. Then organize.3. Dust your ceiling and walls

This may seem awkward, but what most people do not know is that dust collects on walls over time. If any black spots are seen on your ceil-ing, then that is mold and you should get rid of it right away. If it keeps coming back, then you may have a leak in your room.

4. Wash your curtains Take down your draperies and curtains and wash them according to the directions. Dust down window sills and clean the inside and outside of your windows. Wash all window screens as well.Wash all bedding. Remove bedding including pillowcases, pil-lows, and mattress pads and have them washed accordingly. Vacuum both sides of your mattress and clean up any mess you may have under your bed.

5. Clean computer hardware Use compressed air dust-ers or a normal duster to clean out dust and other waste in your keyboard, mouse, and speakers.

This year, Easter falls on Sunday, April 24. Easter has been inter-preted differently throughout the years. For religious people, Easter is a big deal, but for non-religious people, they see Easter as a spring activity day. When someone says “Easter” to a five year old girl, the first thing that might pop into her mind is an Easter egg hunt. Easter egg hunts are very popular activities during Easter. When the Easter egg hunt first started, many people used hard boiled eggs. They would paint them with different patterns, pictures, or even letters to spell out a word. Nowadays, people mostly use fake plastic eggs that can open. This allows them to place little toys or chocolate in them. The activity involves two steps. The first step is to hide the egg in a non-visible place, but if little kids are play-ing, adults usually put them in places where the kids can easily see them. The second step is to watch the kids have fun collecting the eggs and opening them. Sometimes, community parks will offer Easter egg hunts for kids, so you won’t have to do it yourself. Another thing that pops into kids’ minds when you say “Easter” is the Easter bunny or Easter hare. The Easter bunny/hare is thought to bring Easter eggs for kids. The Easter bunny is sometimes contrasted with Santa Claus during Christmas. They are supposed to bring goods to kids and families. Kids often take pictures with the Easter bunny and receive an egg filled with chocolate. Easter day is a cheerful day when everyone, including adults, is hav-ing fun. It is a perfect time for family too.
