NOTESOrlandus Lassus (1532-1594) was generally

acknowledged as the leading composer of his day. The “divine Orlande, prince of musicians,” saw more of his output published than did any of his contemporaries, and that output was vast and varied. He was truly a man of many parts: a talented singer in his youth, a prolific cosmo-politan composer in his twenties, an extrovert comic actor in his thirties, a keen traveller and amusing polyglot correspondent in his forties and fifties, and an introverted melancholic in his sixties.

His works embraced the greatest variety of subject and style within the realm of vocal polyphony, a medium which dominates the surviving art music of the time. Resonet in Laudibus is loosely based on the 15th century German tune, Joseph lieber, Joseph mein. It expresses the joy of Christmas in a positive and bright style. This is one of a series of five-voice motets for Christmastide that Lassus published at different times and which were gathered together by his sons in the great posthumous Magnum Opus Musicum of 1604, the first ever attempt at a complete edition. Resonet in laudi-bus is surely one of the most popular, although at the same time one of the most rhythmically challenging of Lassus’ motets.

John Rutter was born in London in 1945 and studied music at Clare College, Cambridge. His compositions embrace choral, orchestral, and instrumental music and he has edited or co-edited various choral anthologies. From 1975 to 1979 he was Director of Music at Clare College, and in 1981 he formed his own choir, the Cambridge Singers. He now divides his time between composition and conducting and is sought after as a guest conductor for the world’s leading choirs and orchestras.

Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck was a Dutch composer, organist, and pedagogue whose work straddled the end of the Renaissance and beginning of the Baroque eras. He was among the first major keyboard composers of Europe, and his work as a teacher helped establish the north German organ tradition. He combines sophistication with simplicity in imparting the “good news” in Hodie Christus Natus Est.

Many of the most traditional English Christ-mas carols have their origins far from England. In the later years of the 19th century, many European musicians became fascinated by the folk tune traditions of Europe, and their ef-forts brought many wonderful tunes to a wider audience. Gabriel’s Message sets a traditional Basque tune, with words by the English scholar, the Reverend Sabine Baring-Gould.

Based on the text by the early 15th century chronicler, poet, and priest John Audelay (one of the few poets of this time whose name is known to us), There is a flower is the musical setting by John Rutter.

English composer and organist Herbert Howells (1892 – 1983) is most famous for his output in Anglican Church music. He studied alongside Iver Novello as a pupil of Herbert Brewer at Gloucester Cathedral before moving to London to study at the Royal College of Mu-sic under Charles Villiers Stanford and Hubert Parry. His passion for works from the English Renaissance music developed as he assisted R.R. Terry in editing the voluminous Latin Tudor repertoire that Terry and his choir were reviving at Westminster Cathedral. He absorbed and evoked this style in his own work.

The Three Carol Anthems, Here is the Little Door, A Spotless Rose and Sing Lullaby, per-formed tonight, were composed around this time. He became known for his choral and organ output, and his many settings of the Anglican liturgy written for specific choirs and buildings.

Francis Poulenc composed his cantata in

four movements, Un Soir de Neige, during the years of Nazi occupation in France. The text was written by Paul Eluard while he was serv-ing with the French resistance, and dispatched to Poulenc in secret. On the surface, the text brings to life the harshness of a winter night in a French forest, but closer examination reveals images of war, and of the great dangers which Eluard and his fellow fighters faced from the German army.

The first movement describes how the incessant and inescapable cold weighs heavily on those trapped in it. The second movement warns of the dangerous yet beautiful wolf – a reference to the German soldiers in their splendid uniforms. The third movement finds the poet lost in the forest, helpless as if adrift on a frozen sea. In the final movement, the poet hides from the German soldiers by concealing himself underground. But this only increases his feeling of isolation, and the forest becomes a prison from which he cannot escape.

The Spanish area of Catalonia is a treasure trove of folk song material. Most of the songs are quite simple yet always interesting and highly evocative. In this group of Christmas songs, the first and last items are sung in Catalan, the remaining songs in Spanish. Goff

Villancico catalanThis simple yet poignant song tells of the infant birth as seen through the eyes of a group of peasants harvesting the fruit crop.

We end this evening with a selection of sea-sonal Close Harmony favourites from around the world.

C’était réellement un être aux multiples facettes : chanteur talentueux dans sa jeunesse, com-positeur cosmopolite et prolifique à 20 ans, acteur comique très démonstratif à 30 ans, grand voyageur et correspondant polyglotte plein d’humour de 40 à 50 ans puis mélan-colique et introverti à 60 ans.

Ses œuvres englobent une grande diversité de thèmes et de styles dans le domaine de la polyphonie vocale, mode d’expression artis-tique qui, à l’époque, prédomine. Resonet in Laudibus s’inspire vaguement des mélodies allemandes du 15e siècle, Joseph lieber, Joseph mein. Elle exprime la joie de Noël de manière positive et lumineuse. Bon nombre de chants traditionnels de Noël tirent leurs origines loin de l’Angleterre. Au cours des dernières années du 19e siècle, plusieurs musiciens européens se sont pas-sionnés pour les airs folkloriques européens et ont composé de merveilleuses mélodies s’adressant à un public plus large. Gabriel’s Message (Le message de l’ange Gabriel) est un air traditionnel basque dont les paroles ont été écrites par l’universitaire anglais, le révérend père Sabine Baring-Gould.

Mary’s Lullaby raconte l’histoire des lamen-tations d’une mère qui sait que son fils est voué à une mort prochaine. La chanson dont les paroles datent du 16e siècle est plus connue sous le nom de The Coventry Carol.

Sa passion pour les œuvres de musique de la Re-naissance anglaise s’est développée en aidant R.R. Terry à mettre sur pied l’édition latine du volumineux répertoire Tudor que Terry et son chœur s’attachait à faire revivre à la cathédrale de Westminster. Il a intégré ce style dans son propre travail de création.

Les airs The Three Carol Anthems, Here is the Little Door, A Spotless Rose et Sing Lullaby, interprétés ce soir ont été composés à cette époque. Il a bâti sa notoriété en composant de la musique chorale, des œuvres pour orgue, ainsi que de la musique liturgique anglicane destinée à des chœurs et à des lieux précis.

Francis Poulenc a compose sa cantate en quatre mouvements, Un Soir de Neige, durant les années d’occupation nazie en France. Le texte écrit par Paul Éluard, alors qu’il est entré dans la Résistance, est envoyé en secret à Pou-lenc. En apparence, le texte dépeint la dureté d’une nuit d’hiver dans une forêt française mais un examen plus attentif évoque des images de guerre et des dangers que courent Éluard et ses compagnons de lutte face à l’armée al-lemande.

Le premier mouvement décrit le froid persistant et inéluctable qui pèse lourdement sur ceux qui sont pris au piège des terribles rigueurs de l’hiver. Le deuxième mouvement met en garde contre le loup dangereux et pourtant beau – une allusion aux soldats al-lemands vêtus de leurs splendides uniformes. Le troisième mouvement nous montre le poète errant dans une forêt, impuissant, comme s’il dérivait sur une mer de glace. Dans le dernier mouvement, le poète se dérobe à la vue des

soldats allemands en se cachant sous terre. Mais cela ne fait qu’accroître son sentiment d’isolement et la forêt devient une prison dont il ne peut s’échapper.

La région de la Catalogne, en Espagne, recèle des trésors de chansons folkloriques. La plupart de ces mélodies sont simples – bien que pleines d’attraits – et ont un immense pouvoir d’évocation. La première et la dernière chanson de ce recueil sont interprétées en catalan, les autres sont chantées en espagnol. Goff Richards en fait la description:
