A healthy community is Mary Washington Healthcare’s goal. Since 1899, in addition to caring for the sick, Mary Washington Healthcare (MWHC) has been a strong advocate for healthy living by providing education and prevention services to help people stay well. But even a large healthcare system like Mary Washington can’t do it all alone. It takes the whole community to pitch in and bring about positive change. MWHC strives to lead the way with initiatives that promote health and healing and increase community access to healthcare services, such as: • Health screenings for early detection and referral • Preventive health education events • Patient and family counseling • Direct and indirect support to organizations that provide healthcare safety-net services • Support of volunteer opportunities with community groups for MWHC Associates and employed or affiliated physicians Such initiatives are called Community Benefit, and MWHC invested $60.3 million in them in 2012. Financial assistance discounts for uninsured and underinsured patients amounted to $26.1 million of that sum, and $15.2 million was for unreimbursed care for Medicaid patients. An additional $19 million was spent on other Community Benefit activities, including grants to local organizations, research, subsidized health services, health education programs, community building, and services to raise awareness of health issues. Beyond the significant investment in Community Benefit, MWHC provided over $39.7 million in uncompensated care to Medicare patients in 2012. MWHC maintains its high profile in promoting community wellness by sponsoring many recurring events, such as the Kids For a Cure Summer Camp, to name one. Annual public celebrations such as the Spirit of Women ® Day of Dance ® For Your Health and local gatherings serve as opportunities to provide free health screenings. Operation Medicine Cabinet, held several times a year at MWHC sites and others, collects unused drugs and sharps from the public for proper disposal. Special events such as the annual Stafford Hospital 5K and the MWHC Regional Cancer Center’s Battling Cancer 5K Run/Walk not only get people outside and active but raise awareness and funds for programs, research, and treatment. MWHC-employed and affiliated physicians are encouraged to present free seminars to educate the public in their specialty areas. Mary Washington and Stafford Hospitals host numerous free support groups to give those coping with, or recovering from, a variety of medical conditions a sense of community support and caring. This wide range of outreach efforts has the potential to touch the life of every resident in our communities in positive ways. Mary Washington Healthcare is much more than a network of hospitals, physician practices, and special care facilities. It’s an integral component in the continued well-being of our communities and every resident in them.

MWHC strives to lead the way with initiatives that promote health and healing and increase community access to healthcare services, such as:

• Health screenings for early detection and referral

• Preventive health education events

• Patient and family counseling

• Direct and indirect support to organizations that provide healthcare safety-net services

• Support of volunteer opportunities with community groups for MWHC Associates and employed or af liated physicians

Such initiatives are called Community Bene t, and MWHC invested $60.3 million in them in 2012. Financial assistance discounts for uninsured and underinsured patients amounted to $26.1 million of that sum, and $15.2 million was for unreimbursed care for Medicaid patients. An additional $19 million was spent on other Community Benefi t activities, including grants to local organizations, research, subsidized health services, health education programs, community building, and services to raise awareness of health issues. Beyond the signi cant investment in Community Bene t, MWHC provided over $39.7 million in uncompensated care to Medicare patients in 2012.

MWHC maintains its high pro le in promoting community wellness by sponsoring many recurring events, such as the Kids For a Cure Summer Camp, to name one. Annual public celebrations such as the Spirit of Women® Day of Dance® For Your Health and local gatherings serve as opportunities to provide free health screenings.

MWHC-employed and affi liated physicians are encouraged to present free seminars to educate the public in their specialty areas.
