Stage 1 - the Master of Professional Accounting (MPAcct)

Never studied accounting before, or have minimal knowledge? The Waikato-ACCA Double Masters programme will give you the expertise and practical skills needed to complete the ACCA Fundamental and Professional exams in just over two years.

It starts with the Master of Professional Accounting (Stage 1), and continues with the Master of Management Studies in Professional Accounting - ACCA (Stage 2).

Study time and start date14 months, full-time

Classes start in early January and finish in mid-February the next year.

Who is it suitable for?Students with minimum or no accounting knowledge, who wish to work towards becoming an ACCA-qualified accountant, and have a bachelor’s degree in another subject.

You also need to have achieved at least a B-minus grade average in your final year of study, and meet the University’s English language requirements (see page 4).

Course overviewThe programme is made up of 14 papers, which will develop essential accounting and business knowledge and practical skills expected of professionals in your field.

The Master of Professional Accounting will teach you everything you need to know to complete ACCA’s nine Fundamental modules, F1-F9. It will also put you on the right academic pathway towards a future career in accounting.

In the final stage of the programme, you can choose to either: a) carry out a research project into an accounting topic, or b) complete a practical workplace-based internship.

November-December (6 weeks):

• Economics for Business (ECON506)

• Quantitative Skills for Finance and Economics (ECON507)

• Choose either: Research Project (ACCT582) OR Professional Internship (ACCT583)

Stage 2 - the Waikato-ACCA Master of Management Studies in Professional Accounting (MMS-PA-ACCA)

Study time and start date12 months, full-time

Classes start in late February 2017 and finish in mid-February the following year.

Who is it suitable for?This specialist one-year masters is ideally suited for students who have graduated from Waikato’s Master of Professional Accounting, and are now ready to study for the ACCA Professional exams.

We welcome applications from international students with an equivalent university degree in a relevant subject, such as a bachelor’s degree. In addition, you must:

• have achieved at least a B grade average in your final year of study

• provide evidence of having passed the nine ACCA Fundamental modules, F1-F9, or have received exemptions from them.

• meet the University’s English language requirements (see page 4).

Course overview

This intensive one-year qualification prepares students with the advanced theoretical and practical skills required to help them successfully pass the ACCA Professional examinations.

The Waikato-ACCA Master of Management Studies includes five taught accounting papers, plus a major research project.

Students will carry out applied research into a real-life issue within the accounting industry, and then write a thesis of 10,000 to 15,000 words.

Programme of study

Students will complete the following six papers over a 12-month period:

• P1: Governance, Risk and Ethics (ACCT561)

• P2: Corporate Reporting (ACCT563)

• P3: Business Analysis (ACCT565)

• P4: Advanced Financial Management (ACCT564)

• P7: Advanced Audit and Assurance (ACCT562)

• Research Project (ACCT568)

ExaminationsAt the end of each taught paper, students will sit a University of Waikato exam, which is carefully designed to prepare students with the knowledge required to sit the five ACCA Professional exams.

ACCA Professional exams may be taken in either March, June, September or December each year.

Students who pass these exams will be eligible to apply for affiliate membership of ACCA.

Tuition fees and other chargesInternational students: NZ$42,000 approximately, not including service charges of around NZ$460, subject to University approval in 2016.

Note: There will be additional costs charged by ACCA for student registration, gaining exemptions from the F1-F9 Fundamental modules, and sitting the five ACCA Professional exams.

English language requirementsClasses at the University of Waikato are taught entirely in English.

Applicants whose first language is not English need to provide evidence of their proficiency in the English language.

For admission to postgraduate degree, it is recommended that students have an IELTS score of at least 6.5, or a TOEFL score of 577, plus a TWE (Test of Written English) score of 5.0 or better.
