ThisbriefbutcomprehensiveGuideispresentedtoyoutooutlinetheobligatoryritesofHaiiand

'umrahwithwhichyououghttobefamiliar.Itbeginswithsomeimportantadvice.Thisadviceis,

firstofall,forourselves,andthenitisofferedtoyouinaccordancewithwhatAllah,theMostHigh,

saysconcerningthoseofHisservantswhoreceivesalvationandsuccessinthisworldandthe

putintopracticeHissaying:"CooperatewitheachotheringoodnessandfearofAllah,anddonot

cooperateinsinandtransgression."

Dearpilgrims,wepraiseAllahforhavingguidedyoutothehajjofHisHouseandtothevisitofthe

SacredPrecincts.MayHeacceptfromallofusourgooddeedsandincreaseHisrewardforusandforyou.

ThefollowingadviceisbeingofferedtoyouinthehopethatAllahwillacceptfromallofusourhajj

andourstriving.

1. Rememberthatyouareonablessedjourney.Thisjourney,whichisamigrationtoward

Allah,isbasedonbeliefinHisUnity(tawheed),onsinceritytowardHim,onrespondingtoHiscall,

andonobediencetoHiscommands.Thereisnogreaterrewardthanthatofahajj,whichis

acceptabletoAllahTa'alah-therewardoftheGardenofParadise.

2. BeonyourguardagainstthemischiefofSatan,whointendstocausedissentionamongyou.

LoveeachotherasbrothersandavoiddisputesanddisobediencetoAllah.KnowthattheMessenger

ofAllah(maypeaceandblessingsofAllahbeonhim)said,"Noneof"ushastrulybelievedunlesshe

likesforhisbrotherwhatthelikesforhimself."

3. Wheneveryouhaveaquestionconcerningreligiousmattersorconcerningthehajj,askknowledgeableMuslimsuntilyoureceiveasatisfactoryanswer.Thisisinaccordancewithwhat

Allahhassaid:"Ifyerealizethisnot,askofthosewhopossessTheMessage."itisalsoinaccordancewithwhattheProphet(peacebeonhim)hassaid."WhenAllahintendsgoodforsomeone,Hegives

himunderstandingofthereligion."4. KnowthatAllahhasmadecertainactslard(obligatory)andotheractssunnah(accordingto

thepracticeoftheProphet,peacebeonhim).Allahdoesnotacceptasunnahwhichviolatessome

lard.Somepilgrimsignorethisfactwhentheyharmbelievingmenandwomenintheirzealtokiss

theBlackStone,tohastenintheircircuitsaroundtheK'abah,tomakesalahbehindtheStationof

lbraheem,todrinkfromZamzamandsimilarpractices.Thesepracticesaresunnah.Toharmany

believerindoingthemisharam(prohibited).Howisitpossibletocarryoutasunnahobservance

whiledoingaharamdeed?Therefore,avoidhurtingeachother,andAllahwillgrantyouHismercy

andwillincreaseyourreward.

Wewouldalsoliketoemphasizethefollowing:

(a) ItisnotfittingthataMuslimmanperformshisSalatnextto,orbehindawomanintheholyMosqueoratanyotherplaceifitisatallpossibletoavoiddoingso.Womenshouldpraybehindmen.

(b) ThedoorsandentrancestotheholyMosquearefortrafficandshouldnotbeblockedbypeopleprayingthere,eventhoughifitistojointhecongregationalprayerthatmaybein

progress.

(c) ItisnotpermissibletoblocktheTreeflowofpeoplearoundtheK'abahbysittingneartheK'abah,byprayingnearit,orbystandingneartheBlackStone,oral-HijrorattheStationof

lbraheem,especiallywhentheplaceiscrowded,asthisisasourceofharmtootherpeople.

(d) WhilesafeguardingthedignityofMuslimsisafard,kissingtheBlackStoneisasunnah.Afardcannotbesacrificedforasunnah.Whentheareaiscrowded,itissufficienttopointto

theBlackStone,saying"Allahuakbar."andtocontinuetomovewiththeflowofpeoplewithoutcausingabreakinthelines.Indeed,keepinganeasyflowduringcircuitsisthemost

commendablething.

(e) ItisnotasunnahtokisstheYamanicorner,buttotouchitwiththerighthand,ifitisnotovercrowded,andsay"Bismillahiwal-lahuakbar."Butifitisdifficulttotouchit,thenmove

on,donotpointtoitwithyourhand,orsaytakbir.ForitisnotreportedoftheProphet.Itis

mustahabb(good)torecitethefollowingsupplicationinbetweentheYamanicornerandtheBlackStone:

"Rabbanaatinafid-donyahasanatanwafil-akhiratihasanatanwaqinaadhaban-nar".

Finally,thebestadvicewecangiveyouisthatyoufollowtheBookofAllahandthesunnahofHisMessenger(peacebeonhim)inallwhatyoudo.

"ObeyAllahandtheMessengerinorderthatyoumayreceivemercy."

ViolationsofIslamBrotherandsisterMuslim,youmustbeawarethattherearematters,whichnullifyyourIslam.We

willmentionherethetenmostcommonviolations.Pleasebemindfulofthem.TheFirst

AssociatingpartnerswithAllah(shirk).Allah,theMostHigh,says,"Truly,ifanyoneassociates

partnerswithAllah.AllahwillforbidhimthegardenandhisabodewillbetheFire;thewrongdoers

willhavenohelpers."

Callinguponthedead,askingtheirhelp,orofferingthemgiftsorsacrificesareallformsofshirk.

TheSecond

SettingupintermediariesbetweenoneselfandAllah,makingsupplicationtothem,askingtheir

intercessionwithAllah,andplacingone'strustinthemisunbelief(kufr).

TheThird

Anyonewhodoesnotconsiderpolytheists(mushrikeen)tobeunbelievers,orwhohasdoubtsconcerningtheirunbelief,orconsiderstheirwaytobecorrect,ishimselfanunbeliever(kafir).

TheFourth

AnyonewhobelievesanyguidanceotherthantheProphet'sguidancetobemoreperfect,ora

decisionotherthantheProphet'sdecisiontobebetter,Isanunbeliever.ThisappliestothosewhoprefertheruleofEvil(Taghout)totheProphet'srule.

Someexamplesofthisare:

(a) TobelievethatsystemsandlawsmadebyhumanbeingsarebetterthantheShari'ahof

Islam;forexample,thattheIslamicsystemisnotsuitableforthetwentiethcenturythat

lslamisthecauseofthebackwardnessofMuslims.

OrthatIslamisarelationshipbetweenAllahandtheMuslim.Itshouldnotinterfereinother

aspectsoflife.

(b) TosaythatenforcingthepunishmentsprescribedbyAllah,suchascuttingoffthehandofathieforstoninganadulterer,isnotsuitableinthisdayandage.

(c) TobelievethatitispermissibletogivearulefromthatwhichAllahdidnotrevealinlslamic

transactionsormattersoflaw,punishmentsorotheraffairs.AlthoughonemaynotbelievesuchrulingstobesuperiortotheShari'ahheineffectaffirmssuchastandbydeclaringa

thing,whichAllahhastotallyprohibited,suchasadultery,drinkingalcoholorusury,tobe

permissible.AccordingtotheconsensusofMuslims,onewhodeclaressuchthingstobe

permissibleisanunbeliever(kafir).

TheFifth

AnyonewhohatesanypartofwhattheMessengerofAllah(maypeaceandblessingsofAllahbeon

him)hasdeclaredtobelawfulhasnullifiedhislslam,eventhoughhemayactinaccordancewithit.

AllahtheMostHigh,says:"BecausetheydislikedwhatAllahhasrevealed.Theirdeedsarebrought

tonothing."

TheSixth

AnyonewhoridiculesanyaspectofthereligionoftheMessengerofAllah(peacebeonhim),orany

ofitsrewardsorpunishments,becomesanunbeliever.Allah.theMostHigh,says:"Say:DoyouridiculeAllah,HisrevelationsandHisMessenger?Makeno

excuse;youhavedisbelievedafteryour(professionof)faith

TheSeventh

Thepracticeofmagicincludedinthisiscausingariftbetweenahusbandandwifebyturninghis

loveforherintohatred,ortemptingapersontodothingshedislikesbyusingblackarts.Onewho

engagesinsuchathingorispleasedwithitisoutsidethepaleofIslam.AllahtheMostHigh,says,

"Thetwo(angels,HarutandMarut)didnotteachanyone(magic)withoutwarningthem,'Indeed,

weareatrial;thendonotdisbelieve."'

TheEighth

SupportingandaidingpolytheistsagainsttheMuslims,AllahtheMostHigh,says:"Theonefrom

amongyouwhosupportsthembelongstothem.Truly.Allahdoesnotguidethepeoplewhodowrong."

TheNinth

AnyonewhobelievesthatsomepeoplearepermittedtodeviatefromtheShari'ahofMuhammad

(peacebeonhim)isanunbelieverbythewordofAllah,theMostHigh:"ifanyoneseeksareligion

otherthanal-Islamitwillnotbeacceptedfromhim,andintheHereafterhewillbyamongthe

losers.

TheTenth

ToturncompletelyawayfromthereligionofAllah,neitherlearningitspreceptsnoractinguponit.

AllahtheMostHigh,says:"Whodoesgreaterwrongthantheonewhoisremindedofthe

revelationsofhisLordandturnsawayfromthem.Truly,Weshallrecompensetheguilty,"andHealsosays:"Butthosewhodisbelieveturnawayfromthataboutwhichtheyarewarned."

Itmakesnodifferencewhethersuchviolationsarecommittedasajoke,inseriousnessoroutof

fear,exceptwhentheyaredoneundercompulsion.

WeseekrefugeinAllahfromsuchdeedsasentailHiswrathandseverepunishment.

HowtoperformHaJJand'Umrah,andtovisittheProphet'sMosque

BrotherandsisterMuslims:

Therearethreewaysofperformingthehajj:

HajjAt-Tamattu(interrupted)

Haiial-qiran(combined)

Haiial-Ifrad(single)

HajjAt-Tamattu

Thismeansenteringintoihramforthe'umrahduringthemonthsofHaji,i.e.,themonthsof

Shawwal,Dhul-Q'idahandthefirsttendaysofDhul-Hijjah;totakeoffihramafterperformingthe'umrah;andthentotakeihramagainforthehajjfromMakkahonthe8thdayofDhul-Hijjahduring

thesameyearinwhichthe'umrahwasperformed.

Hajjal-Qiran

Thisdenotesenteringintoihramforboththe'umrahandthehajjatthesametime,nottakingoff

theihramuntiltheDayofSacrifice(the10thofDhul-Hijjah).Alternatively,onemayfirstenterinto

ihramforthe'umrah,andbeforebeginningone'stawafmaymaketheintentionofihramforthehajj

aswell.

Hajjal-lfrad

ThissignifiesdonningihramforthehajjeitherfromtheprescribedStationoflhram(al-miqat),

fromMakkanifoneresidesthere,orfromaplaceinbetweenal-miqatandMakkahintheeventthatonehasbroughtasacrificialanimalwithhim,andtoremaininihramuntiltheDayofSacrifice.If

onehasnotbroughtananimalforsacrifice,heisrequiredtocomeoutofihramafterperforming

'umrah;thatis,hemakesthe(Sa'ye)"aroundtheK'abah(tawaf),performsthe(Sa'ye)therunning

betweenSafaandMarwahcutssomeofhishairandthencomesoutofihram,resuminghisusualclothingandstate.Thisiswhatthe,Prophet(peacebeonhim)prescribedforthosepeoplewhohad

enteredintoihramforthehajjwithoutbringingasacrificialanimal;theythenre-enteredintoihram

onthe8thofDhul-Hijjah.Thesameappliestoapersonwhoisperforminghajjal-qiranintheevent

thathehasnotbroughtwithhimananimaltosacrifice;itisrequiredthathecomesoutofihram

afterthe'umrah,asdescribedabove.

ThePerformanceof'Umrah

1. WhenyoureachtheprescribedStation(al-miqat),makeghusl(ashowerorfullwashingofthewholebody),useperfumeifavailable,andthenputonthetwo-piecegarmentofihram(izar

andrida),whichpreferablyshouldbeofwhitecloth.Thisappliestomenonly.Awomanalsomakes

ghuslbutshedoesnotusemakeup,andshemaywearanyclothesshehasavailableaslongasthey

donotdisplayheradornments;sheshouldbecompletelycoveredexceptforherfaceandhands.

Thenmakeyourintentiontoperform'Umrahbysaying;Labbayka'Umrah,or:LabbaykAllahumma

Umrah,asfollows:

Labbayk,Allahumma.Labbayk-HereIamatYourservice.0Lord,hereIam.

Labbayk.Lashareekalaka.Labbayk-HereIam.NopartnerdoYouhave.HereIam,lnnal-hamdawan-n'imatalakawal-mulk-Truly,thepraiseandthefavorisYours,andthe

dominion.Lashareekalak'-NopartnerdoYouhaveMenshouldutterthisaloudwhilewomenshouldsayitsilently.Repeatthistalbiyyahfrequently,

andengageinthepraiseofAllah,insupplicationsforforgiveness,andintheenjoiningofwhatis

goodandforbiddingofwhatisevil.

2. WhenyoureachMakkah,makesevencircuits(Tawaf)aroundtheK'abah,beginningatthe

BlackStonewithtakbir(utterancesof"Allahuakbar')andendingeachatthesameplace.While

makingyour(Tawaf),youmaypraiseAllahandmakesupplicationstoHiminanywordsyouplease.

Itispreferabletoendeachwiththewords.

"Rabbana,atinafid-dunyahasanatanwafil-akhiratihasanstanwaqinaadhaban-nar."(OurLord,giveusgoodinthisworldandgoodintheHereafter.andsaveusfromthepunishmentoftheFire.)

Aftercompletingtheseventhcirucit,praytworak'atsbehindtheStationofIbraheem(Maqamlbraheem)ifItispossible,eventhoughyoumaybealittlefarfromit.Otherwiseatanyotherplace

withintheSacredMosque.

3. Youthengotoas-safaandclimbonit.FacingtheK'abah,praiseAllah,raisingyourhands,

saytakbir(''Allahuakbar")threetimes.ThenmakesupplicationtoAllah,repeatingyoursupplicationthreetimesasthisisthesunnah.Thensay

"Lailahaillal-Lah,wahdahuLasharikaLa.Lahul-mulkwaIahul-hamd,wahuwa'alakulliShayin

qadeer.Laillaheillal-lah,wahdahu.AnjazawadahuWanasaraabdahuwahazamaalahzab

wahdahu"(ThereisnodeityexceptAllah,theOnewithoutapartner.HisisthedominionandHisis

thepraiseandHeispowerfulovereverything.ThereisnodeityexceptAllah,completedHispromise,supportedHisSlaveanddefeatedthepartiesAlone.)

Itispreferabletoutterthissupplicationthreetimesbutthereisnoharminsayingitlessthanthree

times.

Youthendescendfromas-Safaanddothesa'yeoftheumrahseventimes.Increaseyourpace

betweenthegreenposts,butwalkatanormalpacebeforeandafterthem.WhenyouclimbontheMarwah,praiseAllahanddoasyoudidatas-Safarepeatingyoursupplications.ifyoucan

convenientlydosothreetimes.

Therearenorequiredformulasorsupplicationsfortawafandsa'ye.Itisuptotheworshipperto

praiseAllahorsupplicateHiminhisownwords,orhemayreciteportionsoftheOur'an,withdueregardtothesupplicationswhichtheProphet(peacebeonhim)recitedduringtheperformanceof

theserites.

4. Aftersa'yeendyour'umrahbyshavingorshorteningyourhair.Afterthis,theprohibitions

pertainingtothestateofihramareliftedandyoumaynowresumeyournormallife.

IfyouaredoinghajjAt-Tamattuthesacrificeofasheeportheseventhpartofacameloracow

becomesobligatoryforyouontheDayofSacrifice(the10thofDhul-Hijjah).Ifyoucannotafford

thissacrifice,itisobligatoryforyoutofasttendays,threeofthemduringthehajjandsevenafter

returninghome.

IfyouareperforminghajjAt-Tamattuorhajjal-qiran,itispreferabletofastthesethreeaysbefore

theDayof'Arafat(the9thofDhul-Hijjah).

ThePerformanceofHajj

1. Ifyouareperforminghajjal-ifradorhajjal-qiran(i.e.,hajjcombinedwith'umrah),youenter

intoihramatthe'stationofihram(al-miqat)throughwhichyoupassonyourwaytoMakkah.Ifyou

donotpassthroughanyStationofihramonyourwaytoMakkah,youenterintoihramfromyourresidence.

IfyouareperforminghajjAt-Tamattu(theinterruptedhaii),youenterintoihramforhajjfromyourresidenceinMakkahonthe8thofDhul-Hijjah.Performghusl(showerorwashingoftheentire

body),perfumeyourselfifpossible,andputonthetwogarmentsofihram.Thisappliestomen.

Womenlikewiseperformghuslbutarenottouseperfume.Theymaywearanysuitableclothestheyhaveaslongastheydonotshowtheiradornmentsandcovereverypartoftheirbodies

exceptingthehandsandface.Forwoman,ifsheisinthepresenceofothermenwhoarenother

immediaterelativeslikeherhusband,father,brotherorsonthensheshouldcoverherface.After

puttingonihrammakeyourniyyah(intention)bySaying:LabbaykHajjanthenrecitetalbiyyah

"Labbayk,Allahumma.Labbayk.Labbayk.Lashareekalaka.Labbayk.lnnal-hamdawan-n'imatalakawal-mulk.Lashareekalak'."(HereIamatYourservice,0Lord,hereIam.NopartnerdoYouhave.

HereIam.Truly,thepraiseandthefavorisYours,andthedominion.NopartnerdoYouhave.)

2. YouthengotoMina,whereyoupraytheDhuhr,'Asr,Maghrib,'IshaandFajrprayersattheirpropertimes,shorteningprayersoffourrak'astotworak'as.Donotcombinetheseprayers.

3. Whenthesunhasrisenonthe9thofDhul-Hijjah,proceedtoward'Arafatinadignified

mannerandwithoutharmingyourfellowpilgrims.At'Arafat,praytheDhuhrand'Asrprayers,

shortenedandcombinedduringthetimeofDhuhrwithoneadhanandtwoiqamahs

Makesurethatyouarewithintheboundariesof'Arafat.Staywithintheboundariesof'Arafat,exceptthevalleyof(Oranah,recitingthepraiseofAllahtheMostHigh,andofferingsupplications

facingQiblahwithupraisedhands.aswasthepracticeofProphetMuhammad(maypeaceand

blessingsofAllahbeonhim)Remainat'Arafatuntilaftersunset.

4. Whenthesunhasset,proceedtowardMuzdalifahinapeacefulanddignifiedmanner,recitingtalbiyyah.DonotharmorcauseanydiscomforttoyourfellowMuslims.Whenyouarriveat

Muzdalifah,praytheMaghriband'lshaprayerscombined,shortening'Ishatotworak'ats.Stayat

MuzdalifahuntilyouhaveprayedtheFairprayer.Thenwaituntilthebrightnessofthemorningis

widespread,supplicatefacingQiblahwithupraisedhands,followingthepracticeoftheProphet

(peacebeonhim).

* Forwomenorweakindividuals,itispermissibletoproceedtoMinaatanytimeafter

midnight.

InMuzdalifah,pickuponlysevenpebblestothrowattheStonePillarof'Aqabah.Otherpebblescan

bepickedupatMina.ThereisnoharmevenifthesevenpebblestobethrownattheStonePillarof'AqabaharealsopickedupatMina.

5. WhenyouarriveatMina,dothefollowing:

(a) AttheStonePillarof'Aqabah(thisisthepillarnearesttoMakkah)throwthesevenpebblesoneaftertheother,saying"Allahuakbar"ateachthrow.

(b) Ifyouarerequiredtosacrifice,slaughteryoursacrificialanimal.Youaretoeatsomeofitsmeatanddistributethemajorpartofittotheneedy.

(c) Shaveyourheadorcutsomehairfromit.Shavingispreferableformen,whileforwomenthelengthofhairtobecutisthatofafingertip.

* Theabove-mentionedorderofdoingthingsispreferred,however,iftheyaredoneinsome

otherorder,thereisnoharminit.

* Afteryouhavethrownthepebblesandshavedorcutsomeofyourhair,theprohibitionsof

ihramarelifted,exceptingtheprohibitionofsexualintercoursewithyourspouse.Thisisthefirsttahallul,i.e.,returningtoone'snormalstate.Youarenowtowearyourusualclothes.

6. ThenyougotoMakkahandperformtheTawafal-Ifadah(thetawafwhichisanessential

partoftheHajj).ifyouaredoinghajjAt-Tamattu,youalsoperformsa'ye.ityouareperforminghajj

al-Ifradorhajjal-qiranandyoudidnotperformsa'yewithTawafal-Qudum(theTawafofArrival),

youmustdosa'yenow.Afterthis,theprohibitionofmaritalrelationsisalsoliftedandyoureturntoacompletelynormallife.

* ItispermissibletodelaytheTawafal-IfadahuntilthedaysspentatMinaareover,goingto

MakkahforthistawafafterallthreePillarshavebeenstoned.

7. AfterperformingyourTawafal-IfadahontheDayofSacrifice,returntoMinaandspend

therethenightsprecedingthe11th,12thand13thdaysofDhul-Hijjah(thethreedaysfollowingtheDayofSacrificewhichareknownasayyamu-tashreeg.Itishowever,permissibletospendonlytwo

nightsinMinainsteadofthree.

8. AtanytimeintheafternoonofeachofthetwoorthreedaysofyourstayinMina,stoneeach

ofthethreePillars,startingwiththefirstPillar(i.e.,theonewhichisfarthestfromMakkah),followedbythemiddlePillarandlastlythePillarof'Aqabah.Throwsevenpebbles,onebyone,at

eachofthesePillars,saying"Allahuakbar"ateachthroweachthrow.

* IfyoustayinMinaforonlytwodays,youmustleaveMinabeforethesunsetsonthesecond

day.Ifthesunshouldsetbeforeyouareabletodepart,remaininMinaforthethirdnightandthrow

pebblesagainthenextday.Inanycase,itispreferabletoremaininMinaforthreenights.

* Itispermissibleforthesickandtheweaktoappointaproxytothrowtheirpebbles.The

proxyfirstthrowshisownpebbles,followedbythepebblesofthepersonherepresentswhileatthe

samepillar.

10. IfyoudecidetoreturntoyourCountryaftercompletingtheritesofhajj,youperformthe

FarewellTawaf(Tawafal-Wida)beforeleavingMakkah.Nooneisexcusedfromthisexceptwomen

whoaremenstruatingorintheperiodofdischargefollowingchildbirth.

ObligationsDuringIhram

Duringthestateofihramforhajjor'Umrah,thefollowingareobligatory;

1. TofaithfullyobserveallthatAllahhasmadeobligatory,suchasthedailyprayersattheir

propertimes.

2. ToavoidwhatAllahhasprohibited,suchaswrongdoing,quarrelingandcommittingsins.

3. ToguardagainstinjuringtheMuslimsbydeedorbyword.

4. Toabstainfromwhatisprohibitedduringihram,namely:

(a) Donotcutyournailsorpullouthair.Thereisnoblameonyouifthesebreakorcomeoffbythemselveswithoutyourintendingit.

(b) Donotusescent,whetherontheclothesoronthebody,orinfoodordrink.Thereisnoharmiftheeffectofscentappliedbeforeputtingonihramremains.

(c) Donotkill,frightenorassistinhuntinganylandgameaslongasyouareinihram.

(d) Withintheprecintsofal-Haramnoone,inthestateofihramornot,isallowedtocuttrees,pluckvegetablesorcollectalostpropertyexceptforthesakeofidentifyingit

foritsowner.FortheMessengerofAllah(peacebeuponhim)saidso.

(e) Donotproposetoawomanorcontractmarriageeitherforyourselforonbehalfofothers.Sexualintercourseisprohibitedtoo,soistouchingtheappositesexwithdesire.Alltheseactionsare-prohibitedduringtheperiodofihram.

Alltheseprohibitionsapplyequallytomenandwomenalike.

Inparticular

Amanmaynotputanycoveringonhishead.However,theshadeofanumbrellaortheroofofacarispermissible.Thereisnoharmincarryingsomethingonthehead.

Amanmaynotwearashirtoranythingelsewhichissewn,suchasaburnoose,turban,trousers,khuff(short,thinboot),onthewholeorapartofhisbody.However,ifanizar(oneofthetwo

garmentsofihram,wornonthelowerpartofthebody)isnotavailable,trousersmaybeworn,andifsandalsarenotavailablekhuffmaybeworn.

Itisforbiddenforawomantowearglovesonherhandsortocoverherfacewithaface-veil

(niqab)orburq'u(drape)duringthestateofihram.However,ifmalestrangersarearoundher,

sheshouldconcealherfacewithherheadcoveringorsomethingsimilar.Theserulesapplyuntil

shecomesoutofihram.

Ifapersonwearsasewngarmentorcovershishead(formen),usesperfume,pullsoutsomehairs,orcutshisnailsthroughforgetfulnessorduetoignorance,thereisnofidyah(expiation)

forhim.Heshouldstopdoingsuchthingsassoonasheremembersorisremindedofthen.

Itispermissibletowearsandals,aring,apairofglasses,ahearingaid,awristwatch,andabeltoragirdlewhichprotectsone'smoneyordocuments.

Itispermissibletochangeone'sclothesandtowashthem,aswellastowashone'shairandbody,anditdoesnotmatterifsomehairinadvertentlyfallsoutduringwashing.

VisitationoftheProphet'sMosque

1. GoingtoMadinahatanytimewiththeintentionofvisitingtheProphet'sMosqueisasunnah,

asisperformingsalahinit,AccordingtoahadithoftheProphet(maypeaceandblessingofAllahbe

onhim).AsalahperformedintheProphet'sMosqueisbetterthanathousandsalatsinanyother

placeexceptingtheSacredMosque(Masjidal-Haram)inMakkah.

2. ThereisnoihramnortalbiyahforthevisittotheProphet'sMosque,anditshouldbe

emphasizedthatthereisnoconnectionwhatsoeverbetweenthisvisitandthehajj.

3. WhenyouentertheProphet'sMosque,enterwithyourrightfootfirst,sayingthenameof

AllahtheMostHigh,andevokingblessingsonHisProphet(mayHispeaceandblessingsbeonhim),

andaskAllahtoopenthegatesofHismercyforyou.Therecommendedwordsforenteringany

mosque,includingtheProphet'sMosque,are:

"A'udhubillahil-adheemwawajhihil-kareemwasultanihil-qadeemmina-shaytani-rajeem.

Allahhumma,iftahliabwabarahmattk.(IseekrefugeinAllahtheAl-mighty,andinHisnoble

countenanceandinHiseternalpower,fromSatantheRejected.OAllah,opentomethedoorsofYourmercy.)

4. Performtworak'atsoftahiyyatal-masjid(thesalatof"greetingofthemosque")after

enteringtheMosque,preferablyintheRawdahorotherwiseanywhereelseintheMosque.

5. ThengotothegraveoftheProphet(maythepeaceandblessingofAllahbeonhim),and

standinginfrontofitandfacingit,sayinarespectfulandhushedvoice:

"Assalamu'alaika,ayyuhan-nabiyyawarahmatallahiwabarakatuhu."(Peacebeonyou,OProphet,andthemercyandblessingsofAllah),andcallfortheblessingsofAllahonhim.

Thereisnoharmifyouadd:

"Allahumma,atihil-waseelatawal-fadeelatawab-'athul-maqamal-mahmoudal-ladheewa-adtahu.

Allahumma,ajzih'anummatihiafdalal-jaza'."(OLord,Givehimtheright(ofintercession)andthe

favor,andraisehimtothepraiseworthystation,whichyoupromisedtohim.OAllah,rewardhim

onbehalfofhisummah(people)withthebestofrewards.)

ThenmovealittletotherighttostandbeforethegraveofAbuBakr(mayAllahbepleasedwith

him).GreethimandsupplicateAllahtobestowHismercyandforgivenessonhim.

Againmovealittletotherighttostandbeforethegraveof'Umar(mayAllahbepleasedwithhim),andgreethimandmakesupplicationforhim.

6. Itissunnahtohave(Taharah),andvisittheMosqueofQubaandoffersalatinit,astheProphet(peacebeonhim)prayedthereandencouragedotherstodothesame.

7. Itissunnahtovisitthegravesofal-Baqe'ecemetery,andthegraveofUthman(MayAllahbepleasedwithhim)andthemartyrsof'Uhud,andthegraveofHamzah(MayAllahbepleasedwith

them.);togreetthemandtoprayforthemercyofAllahuponthem.TheProphet(peacebeupon

him)usedtovisitallthesegravesandprayforthesoulsofthosewhowereburiedthere.Hetaught

hiscompanionswhenvisitinggravestosay:

"Assalamu'alaikum,ahlal-diyarminal-mu'mineenwal-muslimeen,wainnainsha-Allahblkumlahiqoon.Nasalal-lahalanswalakumul-'afiyah.(Peacebeonyou,0dwellersofthisplacefrom

amongtheBelieversandtheMuslims,andwewillinsha-'Allahjoinyou.WeaskAllahforsecurity

(fromtheFireofHell)forourselvesandforyou.)(ReportedbyMuslim)

AccordingtotheShari'ahbesidesthemosquesandotherplacesmentionedabove,thereareno

othermosquesorplacesinMadinah,whicharetobevisited.Therefore,donotburdenyourselfby

visitingplacesforwhichthereisnorewardorforwhich,infact,theremightbesomeblamefor

doingso.AndAllahisthesourceofguidance.

ErrorsOftenCommittedbyPilgrims

First:ErrorsRelatedtolhramSomepilgrimsbypassthedesignatedStationoflhramontheirroutewithouteitherbeinginihram

orenteringintoihramthere,proceedinguntiltheyreachJeddahorsomeotherplacewithinthe

precinctsoftheStations,atwhichtheyenterintoihram.ThisisagainstthecommandofAllah's

Messenger(peacebeonhim),whichstipulatesthateverypilgrimshouldenterintoihramatthe

Stationofihram,whichliesonhisroute.SomepilgrimsbypassthedesignatedStationoflhramon

theirroutewithouteitherbeinginihramorenteringintoihramthere,proceedinguntiltheyreach

JeddahorsomeotherplacewithintheprecinctsoftheStations,atwhichtheyenterintoihram.ThisisagainstthecommandofAllah'sMessenger(peacebeonhim),whichstipulatesthateverypilgrim

shouldenterintoihramattheStationofihram,whichliesonhisroute.

Ifthishappenstosomeone,hemusteithergobacktotheStationofihramlyingonhisrouteandthereenterintoihram,orhemustmakeexpiationbysacrificingasheepinMakkahandfeedingallitsmeattothepoor.

ThisappliestoallpilgrimsregardlessofwhetheronepassestheStationofihrambyair,byseaorby

land.

* IfonedidnotpassthroughoneofthefivedesignatedStationsoflhram,heshouldenterinto

ihramatapoint,whichisnearesttotheStationofihramonhisroute.

Second:ErrorsRelatedtoTawaf

1. StartingthetawafatsomepointotherthanthesiteoftheBlackStone,whileitisobligatory

tobegintawaffromtheBlackStone

2. Doingone'stawafinsidetheHijroflsma'il,whichmeansgoingaroundaportionofthe

K'abahratherthanthewholeofitsincetheHijrofIsma'ilisapartoftheK'abahwhichwouldthen

beleftoutoftawaf.Suchatawafisinvalid.

3. Doingramal(i.e.,takingquickshortsteps)duringalIsevencircuitswhileramalistobedone

onlyduringthefirstthreeoftheTawafofArrival(tawafal-qudum).

4. StrugglingvehementlytokisstheBlackStoneinthisprocessandhittingorpushingpeople.Suchacts,whichareinjurioustoMuslims,arenotpermissible.

* ItshouldbenotedthatthetawafremainsperfectlyvalidwithoutkissingtheBlackStone.If

onedoesnotorcannotkisstheBlackStone,itissufficientsimplytopointtoit,saying"Allahuakbar"whenonecomesparalleltoit,althoughonemaybeatadistancefromit.

5. Wipingone'shandovertheBlackStone,seeking"blessings"(barakah)therebyisan

innovation(bid'a)withnobasisintheShari'ahofIslam.Thesunnahistotouchitorkissitonly

whenitcanbedoneeasily.

6. TouchingthefourcornersofK'abahoritswalls,andwipingone'shandsagainstthem.TheProphet(peacebeonhim)didnottouchanypartofK'abahexcepttheBlackStoneandtheYemeni

Corner.

7. Sayingspecificformulasofsupplicationsreservedforeachcircuit.TheProphet(peacebeon

him)didnotspecifyanysupplicationsexcepttosay"Allahuakbar"whenwhenhereachedtheBlackStoneand,attheendofeachcircuitbetweentheYamaniCornerandtheBlackStone,hesaid:

"Rabbana,atina'fid-dunyahasanatanwafil-akhiratihasanawaqinaadhaban-nar."(OurLord,give

usgoodinthisworldandgoodintheHereafterandsaveusfromthepunishmentoftheFire.)

8. Raisingone'svoiceabovethevoicesofothers;whetherinfollowingorleadingthetawafasit

causesconfusionamongtheworshippers.

9. StrugglingtoprayattheStationoflbraheem.Thisiscontrarytothesunnah,besidesbeing

injurioustootherworshippers.Itissufficienttopraythetworak'atsoftawafaftercompletingone's

tawafanywherewithintheSacredMosque.

Third:ErrorsRelatedtoSa'ye

1. WhenclimbinguponSafaandMarwah,somepilgrimsfacetheK'abahandgesticulatetoward

itwiththeirhandwhilesaying"Allahuakbar"asiftheyweresayingtakbirforsalatsalat.ThisgesticulatingisanerrorbecausetheProphet(peacebeonhim)raisedhispalmsonlyfor

supplication.HereyoumayglorifyandmagnifyAllahtheMostHigh,supplicatingHiminanywordsyouwishwhilefacingthedirectionoftheK'abah.Itispreferabletorecitethedhikrwhichthe

Prophet(peacebeonhim)recitedatSafaandMarwah.

2. Acceleratingone'spacethroughouttheentiredistancebetweenthetwohills.Thesunnahis

toaccelerateone'spaceonlybetweenthetwogreenposts,whilewalkingatnormalpacethe

remainderoftheway.

Fourth:ErrorsRelatedto'Arafat

1. Somepilgrimscampoutsidetheboundariesof'Arafatandremainthereuntilthesunhasset;

thentheydepartforMuzdalifahwithoutstandingat'Arafatproperly.Thisisaseriouserrorwhich

invalidatestheirhajjsincestandinginArafatistheessenceofhaji,anditisobligatorytobewithin

itsboundariesandnotoutsidethem,ifitisnoteasytodothat,theymayenterbeforesunsetandremainthereuntilsunset.itisquiteacceptabletostandinArafatduringthenightofsacrificein

particular.

2. Departingfrom'Arafatbeforethesunhassetisnotpermissible,becausethemessengerof

Allah(peacebeonhim)stayedat'Arafatuntilthesunhadsetcompletely.

3. StrugglingthroughcrowdsinordertoclimbMount'Arafatisnotpermissible,becauseit

causesmuchharmandinjurytoothers.TheentirePlainof'Arafatisaplaceofstanding,andneither

climbingMount'Arafatnormakingsalahtherehasbeenrecommended.

4. MakingsupplicationsfacingMount'ArafatisincorrectbecausethesunnahistofaceQiblah

whilemakingsupplication.

5. Makingheapsofearthorpebbles:duringthedayof'Arafat,atparticularplaces,bysome

people,hasnobasesintheShariahofAllah.

Fifth:ErrorsRelatedtoMuzdalifahSomepilgrimsstartcollectingpebblestothrowattheStonePillarsinMinaassoonastheyarrivein

MuzdalifahpriortoprayingtheMaghriband'lshaprayers.Thisisnotcorrect.Noristhepractice

thatallthepebblesmustbecollectedatMuzdalifah.

Thecorrectpositionisthatthepebblescanbecollectedanywherewithintheboundariesofal-

Haram(theterritoryorprecinctsofMakkah).IsknownthattheProphet(peacebeonhim)didnot

askthatthepebblesforJamratulAqabahbepickedupforhimfromMuzdalifa.Theywerepickedup

forhim,intheMorning,afterleavingMuzdalifaandonenteringMina.Therestofthepebbleswere

pickedupforhim,fromMina.Too.Somepilgrimswashthepebbles,butthisisnotrecommended.

Sixth:ErrorRelatedtoThrowingthePebbles.

1. SomepilgrimsareundertheimpressionthatwhentheyarethrowingpebblesattheStone

Pillars,theyareactuallythrowingthematshayateen(devils):hencetheyhurlthemwithrageand

force.However,thethrowingofthepebbleshasbeenmerelyprescribedasameansof

rememberingAllahtheMostHigh.

2. Somepeoplethrowbigstones,shoesorpiecesofwood.ThisisanexcessinmattersofreligionwhichtheProphet(peacebeuponhim)prohibited,whatisallowedistothrowpebblesthe

sizeofgoodbeans.

3. CrowdingandfightingwithothersatthePillarswhilethrowingthepebblesarenot

permissible.Whatislegislatedistobegentleandtothrowthepebbleswithouthurtinganyoneas

muchaspossible.

4. Throwingallthepebblesatonetimeisanerror.Scholarshavesaidthatthiswouldbe

countedasonlyonethrow.TheShari'ahprescribesthrowingthepebblesonebyone,saying"Allahu

akbar"ateachseparatethrow.

5. Appointingaproxytothrowthepebbles,simplyduetofearofthecrowdsorofhardship,

whileoneiscapableofdoingitonhisown.Onlysickorweakindividualsarepermittedtohaveaproxyforthisact.

Seventh:ErrorsRelatedtotheFarewellTawaf(Tawaf-al-Wide)

1. Onthedayoftheirdeparture,somepilgrimsgotoMakkahtoperformtheirFarewellTawaf

beforethrowingthepebblesatthePillars.ThentheyreturntoMinatothrowthepebbles,anddepartfromMinafortheirrespectivecountries.Thustheirfinalritebecomesthatofthrowingthe

pebblesatthePillarsandnotofthetawafofK'abah.ThisisanerrorastheProphet(peacebeon

him)said,NooneshoulddepartwithouthislastvisitbeingtotheHouse(K'abah)''

Accordingly,theFarewellTawafmusttakeplaceafteronehascompletedalltheritesofhajj(and

beforestarlinghisjourneyforhome).AfterthistawafoneshouldnotstayinMakkahexceptduring

thetimeittakestopreparetodepart.

2. AfterfinishingtheFarewellTawaf,somepeoplewalkbackwards,facingtheK'abah,asthey

exitfromtheSacredMosque,undertheimpressionthatthisisavenerationoftheK'abah.Thisactisaninnovation(bid'a)inthereligionandiswithoutanybasis.

3. AfterfinishingtheFarewellTawaf,somepilgrimshaltatthedooroftheSacredMosqueto

makesupplications.ThisisalsoaninnovationwithnobasisintheShari'ahofIslam.

Eighth:ErrorsRelatedtothevisitoftheProphet'sMosque

1. Touchingandwipingone'shandsonthewallsandirongrilles,tyingthreadstothegratings,

andotheractsofthissortwhilevisitingthegraveoftheProphet(maypeaceandblessingsofAllah

beonhim)inordertoreceiveblessings(barakah)areaninnovation(bid'a).Blessingscomefrom

followingwhatAllahandHisMessenger(peacebeonhim)haveprescribed,andnotfromfollowing

innovations.

2. GoingtothecavesofMountUhudortothecavesofHiraorThaurnearMakkahandhanging

piecesofclothormakingsupplicationstherehavenotbeenprescribedbyAllah.Alltheseare

unnecessaryhardships,innovationsinthereligion,andarewithoutanybasisintheShari'ah.

3. Likewise,visitingcertainsitesundertheimpressionthattheseconstitute"relics"oftheProphet(peacebeonhim),asforexampletheplacewherehiscamelsat,theWellof'Uthmanorthe

WelloftheRing,andgatheringsoilfromtheseplacestoobtain"blessings'',areallinnovations.

4. CallinguponthedeadwhilevisitingthegravesattheBaqi'CemeteryorthegravesofthemartyrsofUhud,andthrowingcoinsinordertoseektheblessingsoftheplaceorofthepeople

buriedthere,isagrievouserrorindeed.itisshirk(ascribingpartnerstoAllahtheMostHigh),as

hasbeenpointedoutbyscholars.ItisclearfromtheBookofAllahandthesunnahofHisMessenger

(peacebeonhim)thatallformsofworshipareforAllahalone.

Itisnotpermissibletocallupon,ortooffersacrifice,givevoworanyotherformofibadah

(worship)exceptforAllahalone.AllahtheMostHigh,says:"Andtheywerecommandednothing

excepttoworshipAllah(only),purifyingthereligionforHimalone,AndHealsosays,"Verily,the

placesofworshipareforAllah(alone),sodonotcallonanyoneelseapartfromAllah."

WeaskAllah,theMostHigh,toimprovetheconditionoftheMuslimsandtogivethemunderstandingofthereligionasndtoturnallofusawayfromerrorsanddeviationsIndeed,Heis

theHearing,theResponding.

WhatIsRequiredofthePilgrim

1. Torepentsincerelyofallsins,andtospendonthehajjor'umrahoutofhislawfulearnings.

2. Toguardone'stonguefromlying,backbitingandslandering.

3. Topurifytheintentiontoperformhajjor'umrahsolelytoseekthepleasureofAllahtheMostHigh.

4. Tolearnwhatactionsareprescribed'bytheShari'ahorhajjand'umrah,andintheeventofanydifficultyorproblemtoaskthosewhoknow.

5. Whenthepilgrimarrivesatal-miqat(stationofihram)heisfreetochooseoneofthethreetypesofhajj(ifrad,tamatt'uorqiran).Tamatt'uispreferableforapersonwhohasnot

broughthissacrificialanimalwithhim,whileqiranispreferableforonewhohashisanimal

withhim.

6. Ifthepersonenteringihramisafraidhemaynotbeabletocompletealltheritesbecauseofsicknessorfear,heshouldmakethecondition:"IwillreturntothenormalstateincaseIamobligedto."

7. Thehajjofchildrenisvalid,butitdoesnotfulfilltheirIslamicobligationofhajj.8. Duringthestateofihram,onemaytakebathorwashhisheadorscratchitifneedbe.

9. Awomanmayveilherfacewithherheadcoveringifshefearsthatmenarelookingather.

10. Manywomenwearaheadbandundertheveiltokeepitawayfromtheface.Thisactionhasnobasis.

11. Itispermissibletowashtheihramgarmentsandtowearthemagain,ortochangeintootherihramgarments.

12. If,duringthestateofihram,oneshouldwearasewngarment,coverhishead,orusescentduetoforgetfulnessorignorance,noexpiation(penaltyorredemptiveoffering)isrequiredofhim.

13. IfoneisperforminghajjAt-Tamattuor'umrah,heshouldstoprecitingtalbiyyahupon

arrivingattheK'abahbeforebeginninghistawaf.

14. Walkingwithquick,shortstepsandbaringtherightshoulderisnotpermissibleduringtawafexceptduringthefirstthreecircuitsoftheTawafofArrival(tawafal-qudum).Thisappliestomenonly.

15. Ifthepilgrimforgetshowmanycircuitshehasperformed,i.e.,whetherthreeorfour,he

shouldcountthemasthree(thatis,thelesserofthetwonumbers).Thesameprocedureisto

befollowedforsa'ye.

16. Incaseoflargecrowds,thereisnoharminperformingthecircuitsbeyondtheStationof

lbraheemorevenfurtherbeyond,asthewholeoftheSacredMosqueisaplaceoftawaf.

17. Itisprohibitedforawomantomaketawafshowingheradornments,usingperfume,ornotcoveringproperlywhattheShari'ahrequireshertobecovered.

18. Ifawoman'smensesbeginsorshegivesbirthafterenteringintoihram,itisnotpermissibleforhertomaketawafuntiltheflowofbloodceasesandsheiscleansed.

19. Awomanmaywearanydressforihramaslongasitdoesnotresemblemen'sclothing,showheradornments,orcausetemptationtomen.

20. Toverbalizetheintentionsforactsofworshipotherthanthehajjor'umrahisaninnovation

(bid'a),andtosayitaloudisevenmoreincorrect.

21. IfaMuslimhastheintentionofmakinghajjor'umrah,itisforbiddenforhimtopassbytheappointedStationoflhrem(al-miqat)withoutenteringintoihram.

22. Ifthepilgrimforhajjor'umrahisarrivingbyair,heentersintoihramontheplanewhenhepassesparalleltotheStationofihramonhisroute.Heistopreparehimself,forenteringinto

ihramduringtheflightbeforeboardingtheplane.

23. IfoneresidesinMakkah,orbetweenMakkahandtheStationsofIhramheneednotgoanywheretotakeihram.Inthiscase,heistotakehisihramforeitherhajjor'umrahathis

placeofresidence.

24. Inordertoincreasethenumberoftheir'umrahs,somepeoplegotoal-Tan'imoral-J'iranahafterthehajjandsubsequentlyreturnfor'umrah.NosupportforthispracticeexistsintheShari'ah.

25. ThepilgrimwhoisperforminghajjAt-Tamatture-entersihramonthe8thofDhul-Hijjahat

theplaceinwhichheisstayinginMakkah.ItisnotnecessaryforhimtotakeihramfromanyspecifiedplacewithinMakkah(suchasal-Mizab),asmanypeopledo,noristhereany

FarewellTawafforgoingoutofMakkahatthistime.

26. Itispreferabletogoto'ArafatfromMinaonthe9thofDhul-Hijjahafterthesunhasrisen.

27. Itisnotpermissibletodepartfrom'Arafatonthe9thofDhul-Hijjahbeforethesunhasset.Whenthepilgrimdepartsaftersunset,heshoulddosowitheaseanddignity.

28. TheMaghriband'IshaprayersaretobeperformedafterarrivingatMuzdalifah,whetheratthetimeofMaghriborduringtheperiodof'lsha.

29. ItispermissibletogatherthepebblesforstoningthePillarsfromanyplacewithintheboundariesofMakkah(al-Haram),notnecessarilyfromMuzdalifah.

30. Itisnotrecommendedtowashthepebbles.NoreportexiststotheeffectthattheProphet(peacebeonhim)orhisCompanionseverdidthis.Noraretheusedpebblestobeusedagain.

31. 31.Itispermissibleforwomen,childrenandweakindividualstoproceedtoMinaattheendofthenight.

32. WhenthepilgrimarrivesinMinaontheDayof'Eid(the10thofDhul-Hijjah),heshouldstoprecitingtalbiyyah.Thepebblesaretobethrownsuccessively,onebyone,attheStonePillarof'Aqabah.

33. Itisnotrequiredthatthepebblesremainwheretheyarethrown;itisonlynecessarythattheybethrownatthePillar.

34. Accordingtotheopinionofscholars,theperiodofsacrificeextendstothesunsetofthethird

day.

endofthestayinMina.

36. Thepersonmakingqiranbetweenhajjand'umrahoffersoneSa,yeonly.Thesameistrueinthecaseofifrad,ifthepersonkeepshisihramuntilthedayofan-Nahr.

37. OntheDayofSacrifice,itispreferablethatthepilgrimsdothingsinthefollowingorder:beginsbythrowingpebblesatthePillarof'Aqabah;thenOffershissacrifice;thenshavesor

clipshishair,hethenmakestawafoftheK'abahfollowedbysa'yeChangingthisorderis,

however,permissible.

38. Returningtofullnormalstateisattainedafteronehasdonethefollowing:(a)thrownthepebblesatthePillarof'Aqabah;(b)shavedhisheadorclippedsomeofhishair;(c)done

tawafal-ifadawithsa'ye.

39.

IfthepilgrimdecidestoshortenhisstayinMina,itisnecessarythathedepartsfromMinabeforethesunset.

40. Forachildwhocannotdothethrowingofpebbles,hisguardianthrowsonhisbehalfafterthrowinghisownpebbles.

41. Apersonwhoisnotcapableofgoingtothethrowingduetooldage,illnessorpregnancyispermittedtoappointsomeoneelse(hisproxy)todothethrowingonhisorherbehalf.

42. Theproxyfirstthrowshisownpebblesandthereafter,withoutleavingtheplace,throwsthepebblesonbehalfofthepersonwhomherepresentsateachofthethreePillars.

43. ExceptfortheresidentsoftheSacredMosque,itisobligatoryonanyonewhoisdoinghajjal-tamatt'uorhajjal-qirantosacrificeasheeportoshareintheseventhpartofacamelora

cow.

44. Ifthepilgrimisunabletomakethissacrifice,hemustfastthreedaysduringthehajjandsevendaysafterreturninghome.

45. ItispreferablethatthesethreedaysoffastingbecompletedbeforetheDayof'Arafatsothatheisnotfastingonthatday,orotherwisethathefastonthe11th,12thand13thofDhul-

Hijjah.

46. Itispermissibletofastthesethreedayseitherconsecutivelyorseparately,andthesameappliestothesevendaysoffastingathome.

47. TheFarewellTawaf(tawafal-wida')isobligatoryforeverypilgrimexceptingmenstruatingorpost-partumwomen.

48. TovisittheProphet'sMosqueinMadinahisasunnah,whetheritisdonebeforethehaiior

afterit.

49. WhenyouentertheProphet'sMosque,itissunnahtopraytworak'atsoftahiyyatal-masjid(thesalahofgreetingthemosque).Althoughyoucanperformthissalahanywhereinthe

Mosque,itispreferabletoperformitintheRawdah.

50. VisitingthegravesoftheProphet(peacebeonhim)andothersisallowedforMalesonly,andnotforfemales,sothattheywouldnothavetotravelforsuchavisit.

51. Rubbingandwipingone'shandsagainstthewallsofthechambercontainingtheProphet'stomb,kissingit,ordoingcircuitsarounditareallinnovationswhichareprohibited.Our

uprightancestorsdidnotdosuchthingsinparticularmakingtawafaroundthechamberis

shirk(ascribingpartnerstoAllah).

52. ItisalsoshirktocallupontheProphet(peacebeuponhim)forthefulfillmentofaneedortoremoveagrief.

53. TheProphet'slifeinhisgraveisinthestateatbarzakh(thestateofexistencebetweendeath

andresurrectionontheDayofJudgment)andisinnowaysimilartohislifeonearthbeforehisdeath.OnlyAllahtheMostHighknowsthenatureandrealityofthelifeofbarzakh.

54. People,whostandinfrontoftheProphet'sgrave,raisingtheirhandsandmakingsupplications,aredoingsomethingalientoIslam.Thisisaninnovationinthereligion.

55. VisitingthegraveoftheProphet(peacebeonhim)isneitherobligatorynoraconditionforthecompletionofthehajj,assomepeoplebelieve.

refugeinYoufrommyownevildeeds.IacknowledgeYourfavorstome;andIacknowledgemy

sins.Forgivememysins,forthereisnoonewhocanforgivesinsexceptYou.

OAllah!IseekrefugeinYoufromworryandsorrow.IseekrefugeinYoufromimpotenceandsloth,

fromstinginessandcowardice,andIseekrefugeinYoufromtheburdenofdebtandfrombeing

humbledbymen.

OAllah!Makethebeginningofthisdaygood,themiddleprosperous,andtheendsuccessful.Iask

YoutograntmethegoodofthisworldandoftheHereafter,OMostMercifulofallwhoshowusmercy!

OAllah!IaskofYoutomakemepleasedwithwhatYoudecreedformereturntogoodlifeafter

death,andIearnestlyseekthepleasureoflookingatYourGloriousCountenanceandthecravingto

meetyou,withoutdistressorafflictionormisguidingtrial.IseekrefugeinYoufromoppressing

othersorbeingoppressed,fromdoingwrongorsufferingwrong.AndfromcommittinganerrororasinwhichYouwillnotforgive.

OAllah!IseekrefugeinYoufromthefeeblenessofoldage.

OAllah!Guidemetothebestofdeedsandthebestofmorals,asnonecanguidetothebestexceptYou,andsavemefrombaddeeds,asnonecansavemefromwhatisbadexceptYou.

OAllah!Strengthenmyfaith,expandmylivingspace,andblessmeinmylivelihood.

OAllah!IseekrefugeinYoufromnegligence,degradationanddestitution;IseekrefugeinYoufrom

unbelief,wickedness,vanityandshow;andIseekrefugeinYoufromblindness,deafnessand

leprosyandbaddiseases.

OAllah!IseekrefugeinYoufromtheevilofwhatIdidandfromtheevilofwhatIdidnotdo;from

theevilofwhatIknowandfromtheevilofwhatIdidnotknow.

OAllah!IseekrefugeinYoufromadeclineinYourfavor,fromachangeinYourprotection,from

YoursuddenpunishmentandallYourdispleasure.

OAllah!IseekrefugeinYoufromruinandfalling,fromdrowningandburning,andfromsenility:I

seekrefugeinYoufromSatan'sbeguilingmeatmydeath;andIseekrefugeinYoufrombeing

bittenbyvenomouscreatures.IseekrefugeinYoufromgreed,badmanners,badactions,baddesiresandbaddiseases.IseekrefugeinYoufromtheburdenofdebt,frombeinghumbledby

people,andfromtheridiculeofenemies.

OAllah!Strengthenmyreligion,whichismyfortress,makethisworldabetterplaceofsojournfor

me,andgrantmeagoodlifeintheHereafter,whichwillbemyabode.Makemylifeincreaseinallgoodnessandmydeatharestfromallevil.

OAllah!Supportmeandhelpme,anddonotletothersoverpowerme;guidemeandmakethe

followingofYourCommandseasyforme.

OAllah!MakemegratefultoYou,mindfulofYou,fulloffeartowardYou,devotedtoobedienceof

You,humblebeforeYou,earnestinsupplication,andpenitent.MyLord,acceptmyrepentance,

washawaymysins,answermysupplication,establishmyveracity,guidemyheart,makemy

tonguetruthful,andremoveallill-feelingfrommyheart.

humble,andtoforgivemeandshowmercytome.AndifYouwishatrialforYourservants,takemetoYoubeforefallingintoit.

OAllahIaskYouforYourloveandtheloveofthosewholoveYou,andfortheloveofeveryaction,

whichwillbringmeclosertoYourlove.

OAllah!IaskYouthebestoftherequestforthebestinmysupplication,forthebestsuccessandthe

bestreward.Strengthenme,makeheaviermybalanceofgood,confirmmyfaith,elevatemyrank,

acceptmyworship,andforgivemymistakes,andIaskofYouthehighestranksintheGardenof

Paradise.IaskYouforgoodbeginnings,goodendings,thetotalityofgoodness,fromthefirsttothe

last,fromwithinandfromwithout,andIaskofYouthehighestranksintheGarden.

obediencetoYouaswillbringustoYourGarden;andsuchcertaintythatthecalamitiesofthisworldwillbemadeeasyforusbyYou.Letusenjoyourhearing,oursightandourfacultiesaslong

asYougrantuslife,andletitbe,thelasttobetakenawayfromus.Avengeusfromthosewhohave

wrongedusandhelpusagainstourenemies.Letnocalamitybefallourreligion;letnotworldly

affairsbeourgreatestcareorallaboutwhichweknow;andLetnotthosewhohavenofearofYou

andwhodonotshowmercytowardusruleoverus.

OAllah!IaskYoutobestowYourmercyonme,toforgiveme,toprotectmefromeverysin,togive

meashareofeverygood,andtograntmetheattainmentoftheGardenandsalvationfromtheFire.

OAllah!LeavenotforusasinwhichYouhavenotforgiven,norashortcomingwhichYouhavenot

concealed,norawarywhichYouhavenotremoved,noradebtwhichYouhavenotpaid,noraneedfromamongtheneedsofthisworldortheHereafter,thefulfillmentofwhichisbeneficialforusand

pleasingtoYou,whichYouhavenotfulfilled,OMostMercifulofallshowusmercy!

OAllah!IaskforamercyfromYoubywhichYouwillguidemyheart,settlemyaffairs,removemy

worries,protectmefromwhatisunseentome,makemyfaceradiant,purifymydeeds,inspiremewithwisdom,avertcalamitiesfromme,andprotectmefromeveryevil,

OAllah!IaskYouforsuccessontheDayofJudgment,andalifeofhappiness,andtherankofthe

martyrs,thecompanionshipoftheprophets,andvictoryovertheenemies.OAllah!IaskYouforcorrectnessofbelief:forafaithwhichleadstogoodconduct,forasuccesswhichresultsineternal

felicity:formercy,healthandforgivenessfromYou,andforYourpleasure.

OAllah!IaskYouforhealth,forintegrity,forgoodcharacter,andthatImaybepleasedwithmy
