ThepurposeofthisguideistoserveasanintroductiontothegenealogyresourcesavailablethroughtheWashingtonCountyFreeLibrarysystem.Forfurtherassistance,wewelcomeyoutospeakwithalibrarianorarchivist.

WashingtonCountywasformedin1776fromFrederickCounty,Maryland.Recordspriortothatdatemaybefoundindocumentssuchaslandrecords,churchrecords,marriagelicenses,etc.ofFrederickCounty.In1789,thewesternpartofWashingtonCountywasformedintoAlleganyCountyandin1872,thewesternpartofAlleganyCountybecameGarrettCounty.Manypeoplecrossedovercountyandstatelines,soitmaybehelpfultocheckrecordsfromcontiguouscountiesandstatesinourcollection

tofindtheinformationyouseek.
