    ACTIVITY 2 – ANTI-SUFFRAGE ARGUMENTS

Although the suffrage movement had a strong following, it also faced a good deal of opposition. Many women – as well as men – were opposed to female suffrage. The militant suffragette campaign did little to improve the situation.

    1. Read Source 24, Source 25, Source 26 pg 1, Source 26 pg 2. What arguments are given in these sources against the suffrage movement?

    2. Select one of these sources and explain why it is a useful source for investigating the women’s suffrage movement in Scotland.

    SOURCE 25: AGAINST WOMAN SUFFRAGE

The National League for Opposing Woman suffrage was established in 1910 to oppose the extension of women’s right to vote in Britain. The League was an amalgamation of the Women’s National Anti‐suffrage League and the Men’s League for Opposing Women’s suffrage.

SOURCE 26: PAGE 2: LADY TULLIBARDINE AT THE MUSIC HALL, EDINBURGH, NOVEMBER 1913 (ACCOUNT OF SPEECH)

Lady Tullibardine (1874‐1960) had married into a prominent aristocratic family and an active figure in public life. She was a popular speaker at anti‐suffrage events in Scotland. However as the Duchess of Atholl, she became Scotland's first woman M.P. in 1923, and the first Conservative woman minister the next year. This leaflet is undated but would have been printed soon after Lady Tullibardine gave her speech in 1913.
