SOLID STATE L IGhtING
gli inizithe beginning
ELECTRICITY has certainly revolutionised the way of living
of society as a whole albeit still only largely in the
economically developed world.
The greatest benefit deriving from this form of energy
was electric lighting. The invention of the incandescent
lamp by Thomas Edison, patented on 4 November 1879,
was awatershed event which lengthened the amount of
useful hours in the day and which brought a light that
was closer to visual pleasantness linked to our
perception of white.
In the intervening 130 years scientists have striven not
only to light up our lives with suitable colour, but to also
achieve better energy efficiency matched with greater
light flows to increase the light's pleasantness. Lighting
in the areas of leisure and entertainment is one of the
most specific areas of all.
In the cinematography industry the advent of ad hoc
studios in 1909 made it necessary to adopt lighting
systems that had been used for streetlighting, which had
progressed from mercury-vapour lamps to sodium lights.
The low film sensitivity of the period however required
large energy sources to power the many lights or lamp
clusters –right up to the genuine ceiling fittings with the
already known neon tubes. Use was even made of the
light emitted by large, slow-consumption carbon arc
lamp sand with different-coloured flames.
gran parte quella considerata sviluppata.
colori.
4
l’evoluzionethe evolution
With the arrival of sound recording techniques, in 1930 a
second watershed event took place which was the
advent of tungsten filament bulbs. These were usually
used in homes, replacing the arc bulbs because of their
silent operation.
Projectors were thus developed having Fresnel
concentrator lenses, which went on to become a
permanent feature of film and television sets.
Also the revolutionary quartz bulbs of 1959 used the
consolidated apparatus.
These still had a tungsten filament which survived inside
a quartz bulb (to give a higher performance consistency)
and having a halide, which rebuilt it without dispersing
it onto the bulb. These solutions contributed to much
reducing the size of lighting apparatus.
The 1970s brought gas discharge lamps using mercury
and halogen and rare earths, all producing luminescence
and making a substantial contribution to the
development cinematography and television.
After the initial phase of adaptation and acceptance by
the lighting engineers these lamps produced a suitable
light which was long-lasting, gave 5,500°K colour
matching and a constant colour and flux.
The 1990s saw the reappearance of common neon
tubes, renewed in their characteristics and in a
colourcorrected version to meet the
lighting needs of film and television shooting. With
enhanced film and video sensitivity becoming available,
these lamps partly solved the issue of “suitable light
matched with low energy levels”.
stessi corpi illuminanti.
Negli anni '70 appariranno le lampade a scarica in miscela
di gas e sostanze come mercurio, alogenuri e terre rare,
producendo luminescenza ed apportando un impulso
sostanziale nello sviluppo della ripresa cinematografica e
televisiva.
colorimetria a 5500°K e colore e flusso costanti.
Negli anni '90 riappariranno, rinnovati nelle caratteristiche,
i comuni tubi al Neon, in versione riveduta e
cromaticamente corretta per le condizione luminose nel
settore cine -televisivo.
energetici”.

Today, for the first time, the previous equation seeks a
balance between light yield and acceptable energy
consumption with the latest revolution: the high-power,
colour-consistent light provided by LEDs.
The latest-arriving type of light sources, the LED, is set to
play a major role in lighting in both technical and civil
contexts.
LED technology is by now clearly carving out its role also in
cinema and television lighting.
The LED abbreviation stands for Light Emitting Diode.
Light is given off during “conduction” when a Positive-
Negative (P-N) junction is polarised and converts the
movement of electrons from the Negative pole towards
the Positive one, releasing photons (light).
As the conduction threshold is low and as light emission is
proportional to the conduction current, LEDs can be
adjusted with continuity - and with a response time in the
order of nanoseconds.
The LED should not be confused with the Photodiode.
Unlike the former, the latter is a P-N junction DIODE built in
such a way that it increases the inverse dissipation current,
televisiva.
Definito DIODO OPTOELETTRONICO (giunzione a

switching an electric current according to intensity changes
in the light striking it.
The simplest LEDs have a arsenide or gallium phosphide
P-N junction. When crossed by current, they give out a
red and green light respectively. Depending on the
materials on the LED chip, you can produce light in a
variety of colors. As mentioned, the commonest LEDs
produce colours that are visibly strong and full. Some of
them give out Ultra Violet (UV) and Infra Red (IR)
wavelengths for scientific use.
The LEDs instead that are higherpowered and that have
more complex structures produce wavelengths that are
very close to that part of the CIE Colour Space which
identifies the region of the colour temperatures, or BLACK
BODY LINE (BBL). The light of these LEDs gives the
impression of white. There however remain many
distinctions among the products selected during
construction before one can define them as LEDs calibrated
for cinema and TV photografic use.
The colour group zones of the various LEDs are called
Bins, and are very wide horizontal neighborhoods on the
BBL line and with tendency towards green at the top and
magenta towards the bottom. Two preferential spaces
can be distinguished: one for the warm colour
temperatures from 2,950°K to 3,500°K, the other from
5,350°K to 8,000°K.
In both cases the 16 Bins overall can be identified, in which
high-power calibrated LEDs may be chosen. It is worth
noting that the LEDs do not emit in the ultraviolet range,
luce rispettivamente rossa e verde.
ottenere variazioni dell'emissione spettrale luminosa.
I LED più comuni producono come detto colori visibilmente
decisi e saturi.
thus assuring greater safety during use. The careful mix of
high power LEDs from Bin of different zones means the
IANIRO products achieve characteristics of homogeneous
chromatic emission for use in recording images, and are
especially suited for the various tones of human
complexion.
This special feature alone has required long and careful
study, and for the first time has made it possible to not
filter the LEDs upstream, thus reducing their brightness.
The CRI (Colour Rendering Index) objectively measures
the ability of a light source to reproduce colours of its
subject. It ranges from 0 to 100.
For the LEDs used by IANIRO the CRI is 70, with the final
assembly reaching over 80 as a value necessary for filming.
The very effective cooling is achieved with no aid of fans.
During the working life of LEDs the response of colour and
light emission is the highest overall, giving total safety
during filming sessions.
The LED units give off no infrared rays which are not in the
visible spectrum and produce only heat on the subject,

illuminante complessivamente raggiunga emissione elevata
luminose diverse.
thus allowing for a more relaxed atmosphere for the
filming.
Besides the general advantages of LEDs, the Ianiro led
systems offer additional and essential benefits, as the LEDs
can work at their peak of efficiency only if integrated in
effective packages that include the mechanic design and
the electronic control.
The design of Ianileds largely exceed the technical
standards required by the LED manufacturer to ensure a
long life and the best performance to the diods with no
colour variation due to overheating.
The low power consumption also allows for savings on the
power sources and longer battery life.
The advanced Driver that we especially designed will dim
up and down the light keeping the same colour
temperature through the whole scale of dimming.

The latest LED generation by CREE has been entrusted with
the task of being the constituent element of the first
SOLARIS LED Fresnel lens spotlight by the company IANIRO.
This product is the result of a long research studies, which
took in both the aspects regarding the LED used, and for
the structure of the spotlight itself.
As mentioned the LEDs are the latest, most efficient
evolution in terms of luminous response (20% increase in
Lumens), color response (CR – 80 of the single LED
component), electrical powering and heat dispersion.
The final assembly results in a light that exceeds even the
design expectations.
The chosen “bin” coding of LEDs, in the Cool–White band,
has a color temperature of 6,000°K to allow for an easier
use in all shooting situations with the new digital sensors.
This color temperature standard is indeed by now
recognized almost worldwide by light manufacturers as
the most reliable way to represent daylight color
temperatures. This choice has become popular especially
when compared with other light sources often found in the
environments, which are used for movie and television
shooting.

The colorimetric response results as having no significant
deviation in the zones of the green and magenta above
the BLACK BODY LINE point. The flows result as suitable in
relation to the issue of heat dispersion generated by the
array that supports the LED assembly.
The SOLARIS LED represents a genuine evolution in the LED
sector of focusable spot-lighting fixtures.
RECOMMENDATION
The many measurements and tests performed allow us to
state that it is now more essential than ever that final users
carry out the chromatic tests using their own shooting
systems.
Most of the Thermocolorimeters available on the market
apply only to the “average” of the chromatic curves of
cinema films.
The filtering values resulting from measurements made
like this entail the risk of confusion and a moving away
from correct results, precisely in the case of digital sensors.
As non-tungsten lighting systems have discontinuous
emission spectrums, they require particular attention in the
approach, precisely in consideration of the the chosen
image’s shooting system.
I flussi risultano adeguati in

Average correlated colour temperature of the tristimulusand colour values equal to 6.000°K.Deviation values (magenta green) from the line of thecolour temperature of the black body, neglected becauseirrelevant.
Due to the spectral distribution of emitted light, LEDs cangive different responses depending on the recordingmaterials; we therefore recommend performing theexposure tests using one’s own photographic system.
Please note that the thermo-colorimeters found on themarket and by now no longer updated, especially if notadjusted for digital sensors, can give inadequate filteringvalues.
In decades past these filtered values were conceived onthe integrated average of the colour response curves ofthe sensitive materials in films. Also in the case of film there are no reliable values onfiltering of LEDs used for lighting. The scientific data used for the measurements isconsidered appropriate and internationally recognized, both for assessing individual LEDs and the assembled andfinished luminous bodies.
The choice of LEDs that produce a colour temperature of6.000°K is based on the utilitarian concept whereby, toheat the light sources, a correction filtering poses lessproblems that the one suitable for cooling sources with awarm colour temperature.

The popular Ianiro On Board 12V lights, ALADDIN andDVCam_light, have been renewed and based on LED
technology. Many lights in this segment use older-generation LEDs, whichare not efficient for professional television productions.Ianiro has put together a more careful selection of LEDs andhas better engineered the PCB layout. The resulting packageis unique in the market; and one exclusive to Ianiro. The experience gained with IANILEDs has taught us thatthe selection of precise LED colour groups, suitable for TVproductions, combined with custom-designed PCBs thatare not commonly available on the market, is a winningchoice. Only very specific selections of LEDs and the customizationof their assembly arrays will ensure real efficiency andthe right balance between consumption, performance andlongevity. The customer receives superb value for moneyand avoids the disappointments from inflatedexpectations of non-professional LED marketing.Ianiro Assembly provides a mixed configuration with 6white LED with Cx and Cy chromaticity coordinates selectedin the group of greatest light output, and an amber LED -also fully tested - to supplement the native spectrum ofwhite LED. All while maintaining a colour temperature thatis ideal for video shooting. The mix combines the highestpossible flux with a natural skin tone and apleasant light. The decision to develop a moresophisticated assembly compared to off-the-shelf packages stemmed from Ianiro’spriority to deliver quality products tocameramen - even for quick and simple ENGshots.

• 6 cool white and 1 amber of Cx and Cy selected groupsfor a final package colour temperature of 5600°k (+/-200k°) and HIGH CRI >90. Placed on Ianiro custom PCBs.
• Anti-droop improvement The droop is the progressive decrease of the luminousefficiency in respect of an increase of the driven current:doubling the current, the luminous flux is not doubled, but just 50% more. This behaviour makes it inefficient todeliver small LED fixtures at high current. The Leds usedin Alladin brings this ratio to an excellent 1:8, making itconvenient to offer the cameramen a light with both350mA and 700mA option, by just a simple and quick onboard dimming.

E’ previsto a breve
The lighting fixtures IANILEDs was the first LED rangeintroduced by IANIRO in 2007. It’s going to be
updated soon.
IANILEDs range represents a fresh concept in the field ofLED tv and film lighting, having introduced an effective, functional and adjustable system to perform high CRIvalues and homogeneous chromatic emission calibratedfor use in recording images; they are especially suited forthe various tones of human complexion and ambientconditions in the world.
The idea inspiring the design of this first family was tooffer DOPs and cameramen a powerful and controllablekey light with long distance throw, rather than just aclose-up soft fill light as it is generally available from theindustry so far.
IANILEDs are accurate in every aspect. They feature highquality components, improving substantially theelectronic transparency, the reliability and the heatdissipation. Last but not least they feature an innovativedesign that ensures an excellent conventional coolingand an eye catching look.IANILED 54 in fact is the first fixture on the market, divisible in three modules by 18W each and totallyindependent, that allows for multiple use, as singlepowerful unit or as a typical 3 lights set.
IANILEDs are patented products.

no fIctIon, JuSt factSIanileds PHOTOMETRICSIt is worth reminding the end users that CIE (CommissionInternationale d’éclairage) the responsible body forsetting the lighting standards, has clearly excluded thatthe existing instruments for halogen, discharge andflorescent sources are adequate to measure LEDsemissions. The measurement of Chromaticity, Colourdifference, Correlated Colour temperature and Illuminanceof these new light sources demand for last generationChroma meters with calibration and correcting functionsthat are not available on most of the commonly used Luxmeters and Colour meters used with conventional sources. We suggest you to choose the IANILEDs module that bestmatches your lighting need on the field, testing the light withthe specific camera and lens on use. The IANILEDssophisticated electronics and the filtering options will alwaysallow for the right adjustments on the production set.

• The colour temperature average values resulting fromthe use of the various lenses and diffusers, are withinthe range of 5100°k-5600°k (+/-10%).
• Photometrics expressed in Lux are measured at 2m, atypical distance of use.
• The values were taken in absolute dark and reflectionsfree room.
• The field is calculated at 50% of the peak value.
• The colorimetry, resulting from an accurate selection ofLED, presents minor fluctuations that are irrelevant inthe practical use of cine photo and television systems.
• Rarely it can be found a presence of 5-7 green tonevalues; also these are insignificant in practice.
• The peculiar spectral emission of LED can showdiscrepant data with various thermocolometres. Therefore we suggest to test the lighting fixtures withone’s own equipment and operational methods.
• The samples that show substantial variations from thedata taken are immediately excluded from theassembly and distribution chain.

FieldPlease note that as “useful field”, we mean a surfacewhere the photometrics are uniform. So an area withinwhich the colour temperature is constant, and the outputdoes not drop more than 10% of the peak value. Conventionally the field is also calculated at 50% of thepeak value: in this case the field almost doubles. Pleaseconsider this when you make your evaluations.
Colour temperatureIt's interesting to note that even from where we start tohave a 10% drop to the edge of the beam, the CCTremains constant. The factory Normal preset is at5150°K. This because the DOP has always the choice toto tune IANILED 54 white tone with the electronicred/amber-red mix Custom control. The Cool set is 6.300°K +/- 200°K. The Warm set is4.400°K +/- 200°k.
Different applicationLooking at the data, you will notice as the system isversatile in terms of output and applications: forexample the IANILED 18 Single Module Large (the outerring) is very useful at approximately 1,50m of typicaldistance for close ups, it gives 5150°K with 450 Lux, 500ISO 25 Fps and iris 4. But using the 3 modules together, you obtain a powerful key light. For example we could test that using 800ASA, with HDcamera the iris of lens didn’t have to be changedcompared to the settings with a frosted 1200 HMI.
Diffuser filtersThe diffuser filters brings a reduction of 1 stopapproximately.
Use without lensesThe use of Ianileds without lenses and bounced by Litedisks, is very useful for lighting in very small spacesbecause the field becomes much larger. Ideal for close ups.
Power to consumption ratioThe LED power to consumption ratio in IANILED compared totungsten is very good, approximately in the region of 1 to6 (18w=108w).This thanks to the efficiency of LEDs sources (no infrared, noUV), to the special selection of LEDs used in IANILEDs andtheir overall array design that enhance the light output.
