Interoperability: Challenges & Tools

• Information about the same films and persons coming from different sources

Complex data schema, FRBR- and CWS-oriented (Cinematographic Works Standard)

Match & Merge tool for finding and merging records describing identical film works or persons: „Authority File Manager“ (AFM)

An example of the use of theEFG Metadata Schema

• Title: “Metropolis”• Record Source: DIF• Identifying Title: “Metropolis”• Country of Reference: Germany• Production Year: 1925• Keywords:• Description: “Metropolis – the city of the future.

Do different types of AV material require a fundamentally different approach?

• e.g. Television archives vs Film archives

• Different primary purposes, different traditions

• Production vs. Exhibition

• Different metadata

• Description of and access to individual sequencesof a program vs. Contextualisation of whole filmswith film-related objects and information

At which levels should agreementsrelating to metadata, qualitystandards and criteria be concluded?

• „Data Provider Agreements“

• Europeana-DPA vs. EFG-DPA

• Europeana-DPA vs. EDM & Linked Data

• Changes in concepts Changes in contracts

• Insecurity for archives, projects, Europeana

Clear metadata licensing requirements alreadybefore start of interoperability projects needed!
