A Future Neutrino Oscillation Experiment at the SNS Search for & Measure Physics Beyond the Standard Model
(probably contingent on MiniBooNE confirming LSND) SNS provides "FREE" neutrinos! Build a duplicate copy of MiniBooNE with a few changes:
Higher PMT coverage: 10% -> 25% (~4000 PMTs)
Addition of ~0.03 g/l of b-PBD to the oil
Distance of ~50-100 m to cover Dm2 < 1 eV2
Detector design and R&D have been completed! Cost ~ $11.3M (including contingency & escalation) Schedule ~ 2.8 years construction Estimate performance by scaling up from LSND (x5 larger)
~400 oscillation events after ~1 year (28K C)
~10 background neutrino events
Oscillation Background Much Lower Than LSND!LSND
SNSOSC
Signal 87.9+-22.4+-60 ~440
DAR BKGD* 20~10
DIF BKGD 10~0
* DAR BKGD is much lower due to 75 m (x6) & less ne(x2)
Conclusion
A "duplicate" of MiniBooNE at SNS can probe Physics Beyond the Standard Model!
Neutrinos are "FREE" Detector cost ~$10M Design, R&D, & Prototype Are Completed
