Induction Heating-For Forging
TOPIC ABSTRACTSBasics of Induction Heating This section covers a brief review of induction heating principles andRulesofThumb(ROTs).ROTsarethenapplied, throughseveral examples, to show the attendees how they can determine the approximate KW, frequency, and coil line length for a given heating application for an Induction heater for carbon steelbillets.AdditionalROTsforcopper, aluminum, andbrassare also discussed.
Induction Heating Power Supplies This section will discuss the various types of power supplies used for heating stock for forging along with the advantages and disadvantages of each. Also included will be information for the user as to power requirements and what should be discussed with their power company prior to purchasing any system.
Material Handling Systems This section will review the different types of material handling systems available for feeding cut billets to an induction heating system, equipment for feeding billets through an induction coil, and the different types of equipmentavailableforinterfacingwithpresses, hammers, upsettersandimpactors.Severalexamplesofequipment layouts will be presented.
Induction Coil Design and Repairs Basiccoildesigncriteriawillbediscussedalongwithhowandwhycoilsofvariouslengthsanddiametersareused.Basicmaintenanceproceduresfromsimpleinplantmaintenancetosendingthecoiloutformajorrepairs.
Electrical Control Systems This section will review the different levels of electrical controls available on an induction heater for operators and engineers. This will include the different types of controls available for part run setups, operator interface controls, engineering setup and monitoring screens and methods for controlling the heating process.
Water Cooling Systems This section will discuss the various types of water cooling systems employed with induction heating systems. Water characteristics and maintenance requirements will also be discussed.
Preventative Maintenance This section covers periodical maintenance recommendations for both end user and OEM personnel. End users in partnership with an OEM can significantly increase uptime and enhance overall system performance. We will cover coils, power supplies, and typical material handling in predefined intervals.
Energy and Economics In the world of hot metal processing, efficient use of energy and proper technology selection is critical to return on capital equipment investments. The focus of this section is to provide all known contributing economic factors to aid in purchase justifications and energy improvements on induction systems. The scope will cover proper coil design, frequency selection, enhanced automation, individual zone/coil technology, and an economic comparison of gas to electromagnetic induction.
