Dear Parishioners, Fr. Julio and I had a very busy week at our Provincial Chapter in Buffalo. In addition to electing friars for various responsibilities, passing legislation and a new Four Year Plan, we also celebrated the ordination of four friars. Three of those friars are members of our Province and came to the community during my time as vocation director. It was truly a day of celebration. The Bishops of the many (Arch)dioceses we serve will be receiving letters this week with the names of those we propose as pastors, associate pastors, etc. Once the Bishop has made those appointments we will be able to announce the names of those coming to our pastorate. We finally received the updated proposal for the replacement of the Church roof. The cost of the roof has escalated to $156,795.00 due to the fact that the project has become complicated. In order to meet present day standards, plywood will need to be added to the roof deck and as a result, a ventilating system needs to be installed. The most recent report from the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal indicates that we have $132,530.00 in gifts/pledges. In addition, some donations were given directly to the Church totaling almost $16,000. That gives us a total of 148,530.00. This sum represents the participation of about 240 households out of 323 registered households. It’s wonderful to see that 75% of the parish has participated in this campaign. The bottom line is, due to the increased costs, we will only be able to afford to replace the Church roof. Our need to upgrade/replace the HVAC system for the Church and hall will need to be put on hold. Please know that gifts and pledges can still be made to the Archbishop’s Appeal or to the Church. A 100% participation would be a wonderful 50th Anniversary gift to the Church of Annunciation. Peace and all good. Fr. Vincent
This weekend we bid farewell to Fr. Julio. It has been a short year and a half since we said hello. How we wish he could have stayed longer. What a difference he has made in our lives. His homilies have caused us to ponder perhaps new ideas or confirmed what we wondered about, but were afraid to ask. Fr. Julio has been so prayerful and yet playful, making all of us feel a little younger. We send him forth with our blessings and our grateful hearts that our paths have connected. Sr. Sue
Congratulations Fr. Max! : Eight and a half years ago, our council recruited a young Franciscan seminarian named Moises Avila into the Knights of Columbus. Over the years, he stopped by whenever he could and steadily advanced in his degrees until he became a 4th Degree Knight. His most recent visit to our parish was on May 6th to take part in the First Holy Communion Liturgy for five of our children at Annunciation. As all Franciscans do, when he started the journey to his final vows, he took the name of a Saint to replace his given first name. Friar Moises took the name of Saint Maximilian Kolbe. From that point on, he was “Friar Max”. We are pleased to report that on Friday, June 22nd, in Buffalo, NY, “Friar Max” was ordained a Franciscan Priest. On Sunday, July 15th, Father Maximilian Avila, OFM Conv., will celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving at 11:00 am at the Church of the Annunciation. Please pray for Fr. Max and for all Vocations. Meeting: The Knights of Columbus will hold an Officer’s meeting on Monday, July 2nd at 6:30 pm in the Annunciation Board Room. Bingo: Our next Monthly Cash Bingo will be held on Saturday, July 7th at 6:00 pm in the parish hall. The Jackpot will be played for 51 numbers or less. Tickets are $12 in Advance or $15 at the door and may be purchased in the parish hall after all masses this weekend, or call John at 410-812-2114. An Invitation To Join: The Knights of Fr. A. Leo Abendschoen Council invite all practicing Catholic males 18 years of age or older to join our Order. We are a volunteer organization that places no special requirements on any of our members, and we offer a wide array of opportunities for you and your family to get more deeply involved in your religious life, your parish life, and your community life. DID YOU KNOW? God is mentioned in the Declaration of Independence but not in the constitution. Independence Day commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The Continental Congress declared that the thirteen American colonies regarded themselves as a new nation, the United States of America, and would no longer be part of the British empire. Congress actually voted to declare the independence two days earlier when they approved a resolution of independence that had been postponed in June. After debating and revising the wording of the Declaration, it was finally approved and signed on July 4th. Religious freedom in America is a fundamental right that is guaranteed to United States citizens by the Constitution.
