ARTICLES of FAITHThe object for which it is formed is: To preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and promote abetter understanding among all brethren.

The Word of God alone shall be the Doctrine, Practice, and Discipline of this Boardof Members: it being understood that we receive it as the inspired Word of God and theDivine rule of faith and conduct.

We believe in God the Father Almighty. Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ,His only begotten Son, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, sufferedunder Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried and arose on the third day accordingto the Scriptures, afterwards ascended into heaven where He is now seated at the right hand ofGod the Father, from whence He is come again to judge the quick and dead.

We believe in Water Baptism and that it should be administered to every believeraccording to the Scriptures given by St. Matthew 3:17;28:19; St. Mark 16:15; Acts 8:36-38.We teach that the Blood of Jesus Christ cleanseth from all sin, and sanctifies the believer, thusmaking him or her eligible to receive the gift of the Holy Ghost which is given to themthat obey (Acts 5:32) and the evidence of such experience shall be according to Acts 2:4.

We believe in the resurrection of the dead and the Communion of the saints, the Lord’sSupper and washing the saint  s feet. We believe that divine healing for our physical bodieswas included in His suffering as mentioned by the prophet Isaiah 53:5. It is still available toall who meet conditions and according to His will (James 5:14).

We believe that all ministers should be of good report (1 Timothy 3:7-12) includingPastors, Evangelists, Deacons and Elders (Titus 1:5-7); and husbands of one wife.We believe the Church of Jesus Christ to be a living Organism. The Body of Christ, andhabitation of God through the Spirit (Ephesians 2:20-22), and that each true believer is a memberof the Body (1 Corinthians 12:14; Acts 2:47). -By Brother Ira J. Roberts

Editor’s Desk“...My tongue is the pen of a

ready writer.” Ps. 45:1

After visiting America, theDuke of Windsor was

asked what most impressed himabout America. He replied,“The way American parentsobey their children.” The regret-table reality is that he was right! In many homes, it is the littleones who are doing the leading. As the title of one book onparenting asks, Who’s in Charge Here?, this reflects ourculture.  Rather than being taught that they are part of thefamily circle with Christ in the center, children are beingtreated as if (and thereby being taught that)  they  are thecenter of the circle. A child-centered home is one in which achild believes and is allowed to behave as though the entirehousehold, parents, siblings, and even pets exist for onepurpose—to please him. Not good! There has never been amore needful time for the leadership of fathers and men.General Eisenhower would demonstrate the art of leadershipwith a piece of string. He'd put it on a table and say: "PULLit and it will follow wherever you wish. PUSH it and it willgo nowhere.”

Of all people, God uses Jacob in Genesis 35: to teach us a bitabout Fathers and Leadership. Gen 35:1 And God said untoJacob, Arise, go up to Bethel, and dwell there: and make therean altar unto God, that appeared unto thee when thou fleddestfrom the face of Esau thy brother.Gen 35:2 Then Jacob said unto his household, and to all thatwere with him, Put away the strange gods that are amongyou, and be clean, and change your garments:Gen 35:3 And let us arise, and go up to Bethel;

Note that Gen 35 teaches 3 things to a fathers: God can Takean Imperfect Man and Make a Good Father. Jacob wasliving in disobedience when God spoke to him. Don’t let pastfailures intimidate you from being the leader God wants now.To be a leader one must Learn How to Interpret God toThose Who Follow You. Notice that God “said” to Jacoband Jacob “said” to His familyTo be a leader one Give Something to Imitate to Those whoWill Follow You. Not that Jacob said, “Let us arise and goto Bethel. He didn’t instruct. They didn’t know the way. Hehad been there. He had the map. He got out in front and gavethem some footsteps to walk in.

lost brother, my lost sister, etc. However, this particular daywas different. Dan 2:17-18 Then Daniel went to his house, and madethe thing known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, hiscompanions: That they would desire mercies of the God ofheaven concerning this secret; that Daniel and his fellowsshould not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. He told his choice men that today we must have a focusedattack on this need. We must have arevelation and interpretation of the dream.. We must pray andfight for this victory. If we do not get a victory death will becertain. Let us leave the other requests alone today and pursuevictory and mercy of God concerning this need. Going to the New Testament Acts 12 records how Jameswas killed with the sword and Peter wasapprehended. A prayer meeting of desperation was started bythe church. The church’s other needs did not go away. Thereremained requests such as: pray for my lost children, pray formy son or brother who is in trouble with the law, pray for myAunt that needs healing, pray for rain, and the list went onand on. However, on this particular night, these needs did nottake priority. Priority number 1, we need to see Peterdelivered. It is now or never because his death is certain. Theprayer meeting was a focused attack on the enemy’sstronghold. I could not say, based on the scriptures, that thechurch was filled with faith. As a matter of fact, when Peterwas delivered they did not believe the messenger, Rhoda.(Isn’t it strange that Sovereign God had women deliver themessage of deliverance to the church several times in the NewTestament) Yet, praise God, for a focused attack that wroughta great victory. I just heard a report of an event on the beaches ofNormandy on D-Day, 1945. At one location severalAmericans had landed on the beach; however, they werepenned down by Germany fire power from the cliffs. Noleader was present and no one was sure how to proceed until

a private spoke up, “I remember being taught that when youdon’t know what to do, charging your enemy is an option.”The group of men charged the enemy, and established abeachhead. Can we get together and charge at the enemy’sstronghold? Can we unify as a body and charge as a singlearmy under the command of Almighty God? What about examples from our generation. I heardBrother Ben Shaw say that if he had trouble getting a prayerthrough, he would get choice soldiers from his church(widows) and have them help him pray until victory was won. On another occasion, Sister Shirley Lester was holding arevival in Texarkana when an all night prayer meeting wascalled. Sister Shirley, in her honesty, said she had wonderedhow this long prayer meeting would go. Sometimes, if theSpirit of God does not help, these prayer meetings prove tobe very difficult. During the night, somebody organized theprayer meeting. Everyone stood in a circle as someonementioned a lost soul needing saved and the entire groupwould pray for that person until the power of God fell. Severaltimes James and Tina Williams' names were called and theywere saved in that revival and they are still on their way toheaven today. Several years ago our church needed a focused attack. Onthis occasion, as we arrived at church at about 6:40 PM, oneof my boys, a toddler at the time, had his eyes rolling to theback of his head. My wife picked him up, carried him in, andsat on the altar. I brought another child and followed with thediaper bag. That night, as it did all other nights, the churchhad widows with unsaved children, sisters with unsavedhusbands, saints that needed healing, etc. These needs wereall present; however, that night we needed to have a focusedattack for one need. As we walked into church, my wife said“We are needing prayer!” Immediately, a focused prayermeeting started. Most of our church gathered around my wifeand my son, who had gone unconscious and was simply layingin my wife’s arms. After about 20 minutes, he stoppedbreathing, turned blue around the mouth, and urinated. At thatvery moment, the Holy Ghost fell and those around the altarwho were baptized with the Holy Ghost started speaking intongues simultaneously. Thank God for the genuine HolyGhost. As the Holy Ghost fell, my son started breathing againthough still unconscious. In about 20 more minutes, with thechurch still praying, once again, the Holy Ghost spoke, myson regained consciousness and opened his eyes. Thank Godfor people who knew how to fight in prayer. I still feel that, as pastor, I can help my church obtain morevictories by having a focused attack on theenemy. Can we take a day in which have everyone in thechurch pray only for backsliders and in every service pray forbacksliders until we see one get saved? Yes, we aresurrounded by enemies of the cross and yes, we fight on everyfront; however, can we encourage our people to focus on onearea until victories are won? Pastors, can we lead a focusedattack through prayer and fasting that will cause us to win thevictory through our Lord Jesus Christ?

Torch of Truth

As we conclude the series about Calvinism, Brother GrantRalston addresses the Calvinist idea of the Perseverance

of the saints. This is the idea behind the “P” in the Calvinistacronym “T.U.L.I.P.” This idea is more commonly referred

to as the “Unconditional Eternal Security” doctrine, or,“once saved, always saved.” You can read more about this

in his recently published book, Tackling Tulip, (GrantRalston & Ed Ralston). This book and others by the author

are available on Amazon. -JKL

I have been asked to pen a short article dealing with theCalvinistic doctrine of the inevitable perseverance of the

saints. I consider it a great privilege tocontribute to the Holiness Messenger. Ihope to accomplish two things in thisarticle: (1) explain what Calvinists actuallybelieve about this aspect of their theologyand (2) offer sufficient evidence that thisdoctrine is, indeed, contrary to theteaching of Scripture. Simply put, Calvinists think that everyperson who has been saved by God willnecessarily persevere to the end. Anyonewho falls away from the faith before hedies verifies that he wasn’t truly saved inthe first place, regardless of how zealoushe might have been for the Lord. In hisprovocative book Stop Asking Jesus intoYour Heart, J. D. Greear gives analliterated adage that summarizes thistheological position: “Faith that fizzles beforethe finish was flawed from the first.”According to proponents of Calvinism, true believers whopossess saving faith (not just professing believers) will neverfall away from the faith, because God has chosen them forsalvation in eternity past and will preserve them until the endof their lives. Before I articulate some problems with this erroneousteaching, I do want to clarify something. I believe thatChristians are secure in their relationship with God. I firmlyagree with the biblical affirmations that nobody can pluck usout of God’s hand (John 10:28,29) and that nothing canseparate us from God’s love in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:38,39).However, neither of these passages addresses the issue offalling away from the faith. As New Testament scholar BenWitherington writes, these passages are intended to “reassure

that no outside force or being can snatch one out of the firmgrasp of God. They do not address the issue of apostasy.” What that means, then, is that we can emphasize thesecurity that we have in our relationship with God while alsorecognizing the tragic possibility that this relationship can beforfeited if we depart from him. We are secure insofar as weabide in Christ. This security, though, applies only to thosewho are in Christ Jesus. If we walk away from the faith andthus deny God with our beliefs and actions, “he also will denyus” (2 Timothy 2:12). The first difficulty with the Calvinistic doctrine of theperseverance of the saints is that it eliminates the possibilityof Christians having any assurance that they are truly saved. Why? Think about those who have fallen away from the faith. You probably know individuals who were passionate for Godbut have unfortunately walked away from the Lord.According to Calvinists, these individuals were never savedin the first place. This creates a problem: Did these individuals think thatthey were saved during the time of their Christian profession? In their own judgment, did they consider themselves to be ina right relationship with God? John Calvin certainly thoughtthat reprobates (those who haven’t been chosen by God for

salvation) could be influenced by God’sgrace to such a degree that they consideredthemselves to be saved: “Experienceshows that the reprobate are sometimesaffected in a way so similar to the elect, that even in their own judgment there isno difference between them.” Calvinmaintained that “an inferior operation ofthe Spirit” could take place in the life ofan unbeliever, so that he was enlightenedwith “a present sense of grace, whichafterward prove[d] evanescent.” Besides the fact that assurance ofsalvation is limited to believers (Romans8:16; Galatians 4:6), Calvin’s position hasthe potential for producing severe anxietyin the hearts of Christians. The reason isquite simple. As Robert Shank asks, “How

can it be known whether one’s experience ofGod’s grace is divinely intended to be

permanent, or only temporary?” The only way to know is topersevere in faith until the end. However, until we die, it isalways a possibility, under Calvinistic premises, that God hasgiven us “evanescent” grace and that we aren’t actually saved. As I write in Tackling TULIP, “According to the implicationsof Calvinism, a person could persevere for many years, holdpositions in the church, lead souls to Christ, experienceanswers to prayer, and consider himself to be saved, yet fallaway from the faith and demonstrate that he had deceivedboth himself and others in spite of the evidence to thecontrary.” So, if Calvinism is true, then it is impossible to havegenuine assurance of salvation. As problematic as this is, it

It’s time to Re-focus… If you are feeling like themajority of women, then your sick of hearing negative andfearful scenarios. Yes, we realize the legitimacy of thesecurrent situations, and are not without sympathy to the

hurting, but we’ve got torefocus! You might say,“Refocus on what?”Let’s start with this, “I willlift my eyes unto the hillswhich cometh my help- formy help cometh from theLord!!”(Psalms 121:1,2) Letsrefocus on THE LORD!When you read this verse, then you realize that it istalking about an act of thewill. “I will”, determines thepsalmist. Sometimes we have

to “get control” of ouremotions, and say, “I will”.

Obviously, David needed to encourage himself andremember where his help came from. We’ve got to lift UP our eyes! Have you ever been troubledabout a situation, and you looked up into the sky to realize,“hey, I’m out of Focus here.” There is a GOD who madeheaven and earth and who hears our prayers. Ladies, we aresurrounded by negativity. Yes, there are threats. Yes, our

county is in horrible shape! Yes! yes! yes, we aresurrounded by trouble. Its time to REFOCUS ! I WILL liftup my eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help. Now I can see my help in battle, my help in sickness, myhelp in everything. I can see this help COMING!Here comes my help in financial difficulties, my help withlost loved ones. This help comes only from THE LORD!Who? THE LORD, Which made heaven and earth! Get youreyes on your only help, who is the Lord. We’ve got torefocus. Pray to him with a fervency. Seek his face. Weshould let our request be made known unto God, throughprayer, supplication and thanksgiving. Turn off the radioand pray! Turn of the phone and pray! You may say, Sis.Kim, do you realize what is going on? Yes I do, and I feellike the enemy has tried to back us into a corner. When wedrop our heads, the devil tries to throw a Knockout punch. So, lets ask ourselves, “who are we serving?” The LORDwho made the heavens and the earth! He hears our prayer. Also, we have a promise. “If my people, which are calledby my name, shall humble themselves, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I Will hear fromHeaven, and will forgive their sins, and will heal their land.”It’s time to tear the idols down, build up the altar again, turnfrom worldliness and worldly ways. Proud and worldlyways are the opposite of humility. You can’t be humble withpaint on your face or your fingernails, or even in your hair. All of that is a focus on self and the world, not a focus onGod. Do we really want to hear from Heaven? I believe theanswer is, “YES!”I challenge you to pray without ceasing. Refocus, and lift upyour eyes because our help is from the Lord! Oh, what apowerful help that we have from Him; He made theHeavens and the Earth!

isn’t the only complication. There are at least two additionalerrors. First, the warning passages in the New Testamentseem to be contradictory to a theology that insists that it isimpossible for true believers to fall away from God’s grace. Why would Jesus and Paul and Peter and John stress thenecessity of continuing in the faith if it was inevitable thatthey would continue in the faith? The Calvinist’s typicalretort (that the warnings are God’s means of ensuring theends) does not make much sense in light of the fact that theCalvinist subscribes to a theology that says that everythingthat comes to pass has been ordained by God and literallycould not have been any different. The warnings aboutapostasy are better understood if taken at face value and notmerely as hypothetical, empty threats.

Second, the New Testament describes individualswho have departed from the Lord and have thus severed

From Page 5 their relationship with God(1 Timothy 1:18,19; Romans11:17-24). Paul writes to the

churches of Galatia that some of the members in thesecongregations have “fallen from grace” (5:4). Peter reportsabout false teachers who have become “entangled” again inthe “pollutions of the world” (2 Peter 2:20). According tohim, it would have been better “for them not to have knownthe way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, toturn from the holy commandment delivered unto them”(2:21). These passages, and others, depict the sad reality ofthose who once knew Jesus Christ in a saving way but havedeparted “from the living God” (Hebrews 3:12). The recordof apostasy in the New Testament thoroughly contradictsthe Calvinistic contention that every true believer willnecessarily persevere in faith until the end.

Called From Condemnation

Do you remember as a kid getting in trouble with your parentsfor something you shouldn’t have done? You know they’refrustrated and disappointed- rightly so. To make mattersworse, you suddenly remember you needed to ask your parentsfor something. Permission to go to a friend’s house, a newtoy, or help with a project. Kids(selectively, of course) seem to havea built in mood sensor. At times likethis, red lights are flashing and awarning message is blaring, “Don’teven think about it.”

A kid with any experience at allgetting in trouble will know it’s bestto wait- there are more importantthings that need to be taken care offirst. Apologies need to be made, changes need to take place, consequences have to be faced. Notfor the sake of getting what theywant, but to restore that damagedrelationship.

Imagine with me the scene as arepentant child sincerely asksforgiveness for their wrongs. A Lovingand gracious father offers forgivenessand support as his child makes an effort to change theirbehavior. All is well again.

Fast forward six months. The child lives in constant fear. Fearof messing up again, of losing their Father’s love. They oftenhide from their Father, wanting to blend into the background. In these long six months, they have asked for nothing. No toysor treats. No attention. Not even love. Though their Fatherstill gives them these things, they often cringe back from it.Sometimes they don’t accept it at all, but just stare wistfullyas if it was meant for somebody else. It’s not that they don’twant it. But they remember that they did and said, and theyhave deemed themselves unworthy. One look at this situation, and any of us could tell that something is wrong. Six monthsago, what they felt was healthy and necessary to rebuild therelationship. But now, it is destroying it.

This is not my story, and yet it is. My mom and dad are thegreatest parents, and I grew up in a healthy Christianenvironment. But my relationship with my Heavenly Fatherwas once this very picture.

The acknowledgement of our sin is a vital step of salvation-what we know as conviction. We are completely convincedthat we have wronged the holy God of heaven. Though oursin may have been words or actions against another person,we realize that they were ultimately against God. And our“godly sorrow”, as Paul tells us, “worketh repentance”. Uponconfession, we are cleansed from our sin, turn away from ourold life, and begin a relationship with a loving and graciousHeavenly Father.

But sin was a cruel taskmaster, and it left us with scars. Toour shame, we may find that we cannot forget who we wereand what we are guilty of. Guilt haunts over sins alreadyforgiven. We compare our dark, hidden past to the shiningpresent of our brothers and sisters. We can’t hear the voice

of God because we shrink backfrom it, afraid He might think of usas we think of ourselves. Ourprayers become shallow andsurface. To listen, you would thinkwe were a slave, not a child.

In all humility and love, this is notto make anyone comfortable intheir sin. If you are living inviolation of God’s Word, thegripping you feel is conviction. Itis a lifeline of God’s Spirit, thrownout to save you from certaindestruction. Grab onto it, and turnto Him.

However, the burden of my heartis one whose sins are covered inJesus’ blood and who is striving to

live pleasing to Him. But you live infear. Fear of failing. Fear that your

past has marred you beyond repair. Exhausted frompretending that your spiritual life is fine, when deep downyou know it’s not supposed to be this way. You have beenfreed from sin, but now you feel the sting of a different whip. This is condemnation.

Sit for a moment and listen. These words are not mine, butyour Father’s.

And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assureour hearts before him. For if our heart condemn us, God isgreater than our heart, and knoweth all things. (1 John 3:19,20)

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which arein Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after theSpirit. (Romans 8:1)

Rev. Jamin & Allison Martin

Page 7: “A Focused Attack”

Page 7

Therefore if any may be in Christ, he isa new creature: old things are passedaway; behold, all things are becomenew. (2 Corinthians 5:17)

There is a greater authority than whatyou feel or what the enemy whispers inyour ear. Jesus did not bear yourcondemnation on the cross so that youcould carry it too. The same Spirit thatdrew us to salvation has made us a newcreation.

Under the weight of our sin and shame, the garden echoed Jesus’ cry: “Abba,Father.” Because of His sacrifice andour trust in it, we now have the receivedthe spirit of adoption, and have theprivilege to cry for ourselves, Abba.Father. God’s Word is very clear. Thisis not the spirit of bondage that wouldcause our heart to fear. This is adoption.Father.

We are invited to experience the HolyGhost’s transforming and renewingpower. And here is the power in freedomfrom condemnation- Beloved, if ourheart condemn us not, then we haveconfidence toward God. (1 John 3:21)

In freedom from condemnation, there isconfidence. Confidence in your calling. An assurance of your Father’s love andpower. Trust in His plan and your placein it. Faith to bring Him your fears andstruggles and hurt.

If you are God’s child, your Father hascalled you out of condemnation andinto freedom- and “whom the Sonhath made free is free indeed”.
