February 6, 2019 Mouse River Journal Page 4 around the County: locals Kongsberg News by Don Wunderlich DEVILS LAKE BULL SESSION Beginning in April of 1990 an all Navy reunion took place in Devils Lake, North Dakota, a three day affair hosted by Carl Bloomquist. They arrived from North and South Dakota, Minnesota, and Canada. This car- ried on for twenty years, and Veterans from all branches of the Armed Forces were soon included in that annual get together, first at The VFW and Elks Club down- town, and when the attendees num- bered up in the hundreds, to the new Elks Club east of town. As time went on and numbers dwindled, the KC facilities were utilized, plus the City Hall auditorium. The 1993 picture seen here shows attendees from the Velva area who enjoyed the three-day event that year. They are, from left, Clifford and Leola Hystad, Ernest and Helga Haga, Don and Ursula Wunderlich, Hilton and Caroline Sollid, and Walter and Marlys Gjellstad . Charles and Doris Christie also attended for several years. Labeled a “Bull Session” from the beginning, that is exactly what it was, for the most part. A Saturday night banquet always featured a keynote speaker, with former Governor Bill Guy as the first one. A publication labeled simply “The Log” described events of the previ- ous year, and a lot of “sea stories” submitted by those who attended. Carl Bloomquist remained the chairman of the group, and Bob Lindblom of Butte became the offi- cial poet Laureate, coming up with many good and unusual narrations each year. Ursula Wunderlich served as Chaplain for most of the twenty years of the session, presid- ing at the Sunday morning memori- al Services. Carl, Alta, Dale, and Betty Bloomquist, Darlene Zimmerman, Duane Carter, and many more volunteers from the Devils Lake area spent countless hours getting each annual event in place, which took a lot of effort year around. Sadly, Chairman Carl passed away more than a year ago. Going to the Session was the high- light of the year for many of the attendees that arrived from far and wide, thanks to Carl. The group lives on, as the board of directors has met several times a year since the last annual three-day event took place. Over the years a large Maritime museum was creat- ed and is still in place at the Civic Auditorium. Beginning in the com- ing summer, many of those artifacts will be on loan to the Devils Lake Historical Society, to be viewed in the old downtown Post Office museum on a rotating basis. With lots of room at that location, and an elevator in the offing, those items will be more easily accessed. It is worth a trip over to that Lakeside destination, with lunch at the Old Main Street Café as an added incen- tive. Sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Ernie Kouba who passed away in Minot. I’ve been going and doing diamond art at Lillian Domres’ Midwest Printing. It’s fun and time consuming, and the pictures are very n ice when finished. Lillian Domres was in Minot this weekend for Dru Domres’ 4th birth- day. Dru is Lillian’s great granddaughter.
