The European Technology Platform for Sustainable Chemistry, ETP SusChem, is a multi-stakeholder platform that bridges academia, industry, SME’s, NGO’s, the civil society and other relevant stakeholders;
ETP SusChem seeks to boost chemistry, biotechnology and chemical engineering research, development and innovation in Europe;
Jointly initiated in 2004 by Cefic and EuropaBio.

Why Why ETP-SusChemETP-SusChem??
The EU Chemical industry is world leader and a major contributor to the EU economy in terms of revenues, trade balance and employment. It supplies chemicals but also new products/materials for other industries.
However, the sector's competitiveness is at risk due to relatively high cost of production, low market growth, and delocalisation of customer industries. Innovation and sustainability are key drivers for the chemical industry’s future competitiveness and for fulfilling Europe's vision of a sustainable and competitive knowledge-based economy.
Better use and integration of chemical, biotechnology and chemical engineering sciences will enable the Chemical Industry to become more sustainable, with the generation of new, improved and more environmental friendly products and processes that supply new and existing products more efficiently. This requires R&D driven by competitive EU chemical and associated industries that can capture their value and spread their use.

IT-SusChem Vision Document (available in English and in Italian at: http://www.unibo.it/Portale/Ricerca/Servizi+Docenti+Ricercatori/finanzeuropei/ITSuschemPlatform.htm)
It was developed through a 3 months national consultation.
It has been recently submitted to:
a) main Italian Ministries and Scientific Authorities
b) DG Research offices, ETP-SusChem & related ETPs
• Development of new bio-catalysts of specific industrial interest, and improvement of the existing ones, in order to boost their utilization in the industry, while at the same time improving their sustainability.
• Implement the bio-refinery concept through a multi-approach transformation (integration of chemistry and bio-technology) of the biomasses more related to the italian industrial production (e.g., wastes and surplus from agro and food industry…)
• Intensify the R&D in the bio-ethanol production sector, optimization of the medium, large-scale production of bio-methane and bio-hydrogen from biomasses.
