CMD's MessageDear Colleagues,

I wish you and your family members a Happy and Prosper-ous New Year! May 2013 usher in peace, progress and pros-perity for all Air Indians! As we welcome the New Year, we can look back at the year gone by and introspect on our suc-cesses and challenges. We need to strive for further improving on our performance.

The New Year is dawning on us on a rather positive note. Since May, our concerted efforts to win back passengers have resulted in our market share heading north. Despite stiff com-petition and high ATF charges, we have shown a lot of char-acter and determination to soar towards a brighter horizon.

It is indeed heartening that we are well on our way to turn-around. Our on-time performance in the first half improved to over 85 per cent from below 80 per cent last year. In the domestic sector, it was 89 per cent while in the international sector, it was 81 per cent. Our passenger load factor has also improved significantly. Our average fleet utilisation has also improved appreciably. The number of passengers in Novem-ber and December showed a substantial increase, with an average of over 46,000 passengers flying daily – resulting in enhanced yield as well. Route rationalisation continues to be a significant part of our strategy to return to profitability. We have been able to bring down our cost substantially in the first half of this financial year and this cost-conscious approach will have to continue. We have also focused on monetisation of our idle and surplus assets to shore up our bottomline.

Our hard work has been recognised, with Air India figuring amongst the top 50 service brands in India in the latest edition of 'Most Trusted Brands' survey by the Economic Times Brand Equity. We are the only airline to have made its mark in the list. This is the seventh year that Air India has been honoured with this award. Besides, the IQS International Quality Sum-mit Award and the Reader's Digest Trusted Brand Gold Award stand testimony to the growing passenger confidence in us.

We all know that on September 8 the first factory-fresh Boe-ing 787 Dreamliner flew into Delhi from the US fulfilling the dreams of an emerging nation. The state-of-the-art aircraft is the first of 27 that we will induct into our fleet. The Dreamlin-ers are expected to achieve great performance levels at lower fuel costs maintenance and operating costs. The Dreamliner has the optimal size and range not only to operate Air India’s current routes more profitably, but also to open up new mar-kets in Australia, Europe, the Gulf and the Southeast Asia. The Dreamliners have started their long haul operations from October 15, connecting Delhi to Frankfurt. We have to utilise these strengths to surge ahead. And, in this endeavour – both machines and men – will have to complement each other.

Let me conclude by wishing you and your family members once again a Happy Festive Season!.

The city of the Taj was abuzz with excitement on December 26. That day the local travel and tour-ism fraternity gathered to welcome Air India’s

flight at the Agra civil airport at Kheria. The airport itself was bedecked with a pandal to host the ceremo-nial launch of the event while the airport counters were decorated with flowers and standees of the Ma-harajah mascot. The Minister for Civil Aviation, Ajit Singh, along with local MPs, CMD, Rohit Nandan, Ex-ecutive Director (Northern Region), Vineeta Bhandari, GM Commercial, Anil Mehta, and other senior officials were there to mark the momentous occasion.

The introduction of this much-needed flight will link the three cities of the golden triangle for most interna-tional tourists – Agra, Khajuraho and Varanasi – and facilitate their movement to these destinations.

The flight AI 406, commandeered by Capt. Rajneesh Dhawan, landed at Kheria Airport as a step-ladder with floral decorations was rolled into the airport bay for the passengers to disembark. The first five arriving passengers had a surprise in store as they were offered accommodation at a hotel of their choice by the Hotel Association of Agra.

The departing flight AI 405 to Khajuraho and on-ward to Varanasi was seen off by the Minister for Civil Aviation. Mr Ajit Singh flagged off the departure from Agra by cutting a ribbon before the passengers board-ed the flight. All passengers boarding the flight from Agra were presented rose buds and a small memento. On board, the passengers were served meals with spe-cially packed chocolates. Earlier, passengers boarding from Varanasi were also presented with rose buds and served sweets.

At the function organised to mark the occasion, Mr Ajit Singh laid emphasis on Air India’s efforts to en-hance air connectivity within the country into tier two cities which will not only boost the hotel industry but encourage local traders too by promoting tourism. He also pointed out the need to strengthen airport infra-structure within the country.

Air India CMD, Rohit Nandan, in his welcome ad-dress spoke about Air India’s initiatives in providing convenient connections to various cities of tourism in-terest to promote travel and tourism.

The launch was followed with the Minister’s interac-tive session with mediapersons at the airport.

Air India has linked Dhaka, the capital of Bang-ladesh, with New Delhi with a direct daily flight from December 3, fulfilling a long-standing aspi-

ration of the people of the two neighbouring countries. The flight AI 0231, operated by an Airbus A320 air-

craft, leaves Delhi at 0545 hours to reach Dhaka at 0845 hours. On the return leg, the flight AI 0232 leaves Dhaka at 0945 hours to land Delhi at 1145 hours (all times local).

The inaugural flight coincided with the launch of the India Show – a conference organised by the trade and industrial bodies in Bangladesh – to explore and strengthen commercial relations between the two coun-tries. The meet is expected to lend a fillip to the socio-cultural, commercial and diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Air India has launched an all-out initiative to ensure success of this new sector. To prepare the groundwork, create awareness and generate goodwill, Executive Di-rector (Eastern Region) R Dayal along with the then GM (S&M) D Kishore and Country Manager (Bangla-desh) D Sanyal held a series of meetings with the Indi-an High Commissioner at Dhaka, top officials from the trade body FICCI, Bangladesh civil aviation authori-ties as well as with local travel and cargo agents.

A media conference was organised at Dhaka a week before the launch, which resulted in extensive coverage and led to increased awareness about Air India's activi-ties. Customised advertisements, backdrop and other publicity material on the flight were created to gener-

ate interest. Attractive brochures, highlighting the on-ward connectivity of this flight to the UK, Europe and the US were widely distributed.

Air India also put up an attractive pavilion at the India Show exhibition and conference, which led to a lot of enthusiasm and interest among the travel and tourism fraternity.

On December 3, a simple function was held to mark the inauguration of the Dhaka-Delhi flight at the VIP lounge of Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Air-port. As the flight from Delhi landed at Dhaka, a cake was cut by Bangladesh Civil Aviation & Tourism Min-ister Muhammad Faruk Khan in the presence of Indian High Commissioner Pankaj Saran and R Dayal. Later, the Minister cut a ribbon at the departure gate to cer-emonially inaugurate the flight. Subsequently, the dig-nitaries were taken inside the aircraft to give them a feel of the interiors of the Airbus 320 and Air India's services. The launch of the aircraft was also extensively covered by the local media.

The convenient flight schedule offers direct onward connections from Delhi to London, Paris and Frankfurt besides direct flights to the US and the Gulf countries benefiting passengers intending to travel abroad from Bangladesh.

The high levels of trust and confidence that the Bang-ladesh Aviation &Tourism Minister and other industry officials of Bangladesh have in Air India was clearly evident from the spontaneous support that the airline received from every quarter.

September 8, 2012, 5 PM: The sky over India changed forever as the world’s most

advanced aircraft – the Boeing 787 Dreamliner VT-ANH – touched down at Delhi from Charleston, US, fulfilling the dreams of an emerging India and a resurgent Air India.

The factory-fresh 256-seater B787 Dreamliner, in vibrant red and orange Air India livery, flew into Delhi’s IGI Airport, lending a fillip to the burgeoning domestic aviation sector. This is the first of the 27 Dreamliners – which was earlier handed over to us on September 6 – to be inducted into our fleet. Since then, three more Dreamliners have arrived out of the six scheduled to be delivered this year.

Our long wait for the Dreamliner was finally over when the majestic flying machine touched down at Delhi Airport amidst spontaneous celebration. Piloted by Capt A S So-man and Capt Amitabh Singh, the Dreamliner was given a traditional water-canon salute at the taxi track before being received by Air India CMD Rohit Nandan at the park-

Delhi on September 13. A hearty welcome was extended to this so-phisticated aircraft and a special function was organised to receive it with the customary water-cannon salute and a puja. Our CMD, Rohit Nandan and senior Air India execu-tives, who came to Mumbai on the new aircraft, were given a warm welcome at the old airport prem-ises by MRO SBU Head K M Unni, ED Western Region R Harihar and other senior officials. The aircraft was also showcased to the media who were present to cover this historic event.

The B787 Dreamliner’s first commercial flight to ChennaiAir India operated the first com-mercial flight of its B787 Dream- liner on September 19 between Delhi and Chennai. The flight from Delhi took off on schedule at 0710 hours amid cheers from the 116 passengers on board amongst whom was our Deputy Manager Corporate Communication P Bhat-nagar, who shared his experience with Magic Carpet. The flight was commanded by Capt Soman with Capt Andrews as second-in-com-mand. The journey was made mem-orable for passengers right from the check-in counters, where they were warmly greeted by smiling employ-

ees from behind dedicated counters decked up with fresh flowers. The passengers were presented with bookmarks – designed by three of our airport employees – along with their boarding cards. The first commercial flight of the Dreamliner to Chennai was given a warm flag off at Delhi airport when all the employees made a human chain and gave a grand salute at its departure. The passengers were welcomed by the cabin crew with a rose bud complementing the tradi-tional namaskar.

The lofty, aesthetically designed archways and ceiling inside the air-craft – the ambience of which was heightened by soft LED mood light-ing made the flight more enjoyable. The large windows ensured an air of openness with more natural light and visibility – the tint of which can be entirely controlled by the passenger with the push of a but-ton from bright to dark in 60 sec-onds. The passengers were given a brochure highlighting the features of the Dreamliner and mementoes on board. The cockpit and cabin crew announced the highlights of the Dreamliner to passengers throughout the flight's duration which was well appreciated. Pas-sengers were served special meals on board, including fresh fruit, and

south Indian delicacies – spinach upma, molagaipodi idli and pessa-rattu – while chocolates along with a breadbasket made the tea and cof-fee that much more lip-smacking.

On landing at Chennai, the air-craft was greeted with a water-cannon salute and later a coconut was broken by Capt Soman and ED SR (Actg) A N Parthasarathy in the presence of senior officials. The media at Chennai was thrilled to see the aircraft and gave exten-sive coverage to the event. Passen-gers at both boarding points were given chocolates and a small me-mento each to mark the occasion. The return flight landed at Delhi at approximately 1330 hours. Inciden-tally, the evening also saw Air India receive its second B787 aircraft (VT-AND) at Delhi from Charleston.

…To Bangalore…Bangalore received the Dreamliner on the auspicious Ganesh Chatur-thi day, as the 'Queen of the Skies 'flew into Bangalore International Airport as AI 403 from Delhi at 2105 hours with 170 passengers on board. The aircraft was welcomed into the garden city with a water-canon salute. To mark the occasion,

The Dreamliner was officially unveiled at a launch event held on September 12, 2012 at T3, IGI airport by Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Ch Ajit Singh. The 112 passengers to Delhi on the returning flight AI 404 who checked in through the decorated check-in counters at BIA were present-ed rosebuds before boarding and special mementos and dinner on board the brand new aircraft. AI 404 left Bangalore at 2205 hours.

… And to Kolkata…Air India ushered in the festive spirit to Kolkata on the eve of Dur-ga Puja by operating the Boeing 787 Dreamliner from Delhi to Kol-kata on September 23. Flight AI022 landed at Kolkata at 1625 hours amidst spontaneous cheer from the team of senior management, our employees, top officials of AAI, BCAS, Customs et al along with a large contingent of mediapersons. The flight back to Delhi took off from Kolkata as AI701 with 242 enthusiastic passengers. The Com-mander of the flight was Capt W L Ridenour while Capt J M Joseph was second in command.

A dream run: Wherever it flew to, the Dreamliner cast a spell on our passengers with most flights operated by this aircraft going chock-a-block. The aircraft seems to have rekindled passenger enthusi-asm during the initial phase itself when it will fly on domestic routes before spreading its wings on the long-haul international routes.

The creative trio of T3An unparalleled enthusiasm was shown by employees and in par-ticular by Diwakar Mani, Assistant Manager (Commercial), Ms Neerja Sodhi, Assistant Manager (Com-mercial) and A Srinivasan, Senior Traffic Superintendent, who on their own designed, printed and distributed bookmarks showing the

Dreamliner with a congratulatory message. In his note of appreciation the CMD, thanked the initiative taken by these individuals, saying it speaks volumes of the calibre and attitude they have for the company.

What makes it a real dream? The inside story of B787Dreamliner – the next generation flying machine – is the ultimate in terms of passenger comfort, offer-ing an unparalleled feeling of spa-ciousness with roomier cabins and higher head clearance. This state-of-the-art aircraft is configured to accommodate 256 seats – 18 full flat Business Class seats, with flat-bed recline and 238 economy class seats. The windows are 60 per cent larger (18-inch– largest in any com-mercial airplane flying today) pro-viding openness and natural light and better view for every passen-ger. They are electronically dimma-ble where passengers can select the perfect level of light at the push of a button, from lightest to darkest

shade taking only 60 seconds. The cabin has less noise and the air is cleaner as the Boeing 787 system includes a High Efficiency Particu-late Air (HEPA) filter. The state-of-the-art in-flight enter-tainment system (Top Series i8000), capable of AVOD (audio video on demand) in all classes has been sup-plied by Thales – USA. The system, with large LCD display screens, is designed to provide advanced fea-tures and enhancements to the pas-sengers. It is built upon the latest generation industry standards for network architecture and technol-ogy to provide passengers with au-dio, video, games, entertainment and communication features better than the latest in-home capabili-ties.

The Dreamliner is powered by GE's next generation advanced commercial turbofan aircraft en-gine – the GEnx engine for medium and large-capacity, long-range air-craft that deliver up to 15 per cent better specific fuel consumption

and a maximum thrust of 75,000 pounds. Its innovative twin-an-nular pre-swirl (TAPS) combus-tor will dramatically reduce NOx gases by as much as 56 per cent below today's regulatory limits. The combustion section of the engine is state-of-the-art geometry which ensures very low emissions and clean compliance.

The GEnx engines used in these aircraft are the quietest, most environment-friendly commercial engines ever produced. From the operations perspective, the Dream-liner has the optimal size and range to allow airlines to not only operate their current routes more profitably, but also to open up new markets giving the B787 operator a true 'first mover' advantage. It will offer superior economic per-formance with 20 per cent lower fuel consumption than any current aircraft, 10 per cent lower oper-ating costs and 30 per cent lower maintenance costs.

The first ‘fair’ commander of the Dreamliner is an Air IndianThe second Dreamliner to land in India at the T3 in New Delhi on September 19 was piloted by Capt Nivedita Bhasin, who happens to be the only woman pilot for the B787 commercial aircraft in the world, a first for Air India. Capt Bhasin joined the then Indian Airlines in July 1984, the only woman in her batch and the third woman pilot to

join IA after (late) Capt Durba Ba-nerjee and (now retired) Capt Sau-damini Deshmukh.

After aeromodelling and glid-ing in Delhi, she started learning flying at the Delhi Flying Club in 1980 and got her solo on Push-pak aircraft in April 1981. There-after, she became eligible for the Commercial Pilot's Licence from Patna in 1983. The follow-ing year, she underwent instructor training at the Patiala Flying Club and became an Assistant Flight Instructor.

The first commercial flight oper-ated by her was on May 22, 1985, as a co-pilot when she flew a Fok-ker Friendship F-27 aircraft. On January 1, 1990, she operated her first flight as Captain on B737 on the Bombay-Aurangabad-Udaipur sector.

Reminiscing about her expe-

rience of training and flying the Dreamliner in the US, she says: “Travelling to the US to Charles-ton, South Carolina, has indeed been a great honour and a mat-ter of pride for me, as it is very rare that one gets a chance to fly in the aircraft from the delivery centre itself. We got the unique opportunity of seeing the delivery centre and also the assembly line where our Dream-liners are being assembled. After years of waiting, Air India was to finally get its second Dream-liner.

Finally on the 18th, we took off from CHS after perform-ing a traditional Indian puja. What was so heart-warming was the fact that Boeing of-ficials had a framed picture of Goddess Lakshmi, flow-ers, coconut, roli and all other Puja stuff for us.......to pray for a safe journey on the brand new aircraft.

“After 18 hours (via Frank-furt), we landed in Delhi on 19th September at 6 pm. It was the most beautiful setting at IGI Airport, with the sun low on the horizon and light winds welcoming the new Dreamliner. It was a dream come true for me, and indeed an emotional home-coming as I landed the aircraft at Delhi. The dream had finally taken shape!”

NEWS & EVENTS

Our City office at 39 CR Ave-nue is a prominent landmark – located at the heart of the

city. Popular as Airlines House, the building was constructed exactly 50 years ago, in June 1962. An extract from the then house-journal of erst-while Indian Airlines, The Trim-sheet, details the work in progress at the site just three months prior

to its completion: “Designed by the firm of Master, Sathe and Kotha-ri of Bombay, the eight-storeyed IAC building in Calcutta is well on its way of being completed by June this year.... Work had com-menced in March 1959 and the total cost of the project has been estimated to be in the neighbour-hood of Rs 36 lakh. In addition,

a few offices from Dum Dum are likely to be accommodated. The total floor area will be 98,325 sqft, including that of the mez-zanine and the basement.”

In a fitting tribute to this ar-chitectural heritage, the Airlines House has received a facelift in the year of its golden anniversary.

Resplendent with a fresh coat of red and yellow – the building has reinvented itself, reasserting the national carrier’s prominent pres-ence in one of the busiest locations of Kolkata. In sync with the corpo-rate identity of Air India, the red and yellow external façade of the building now sports a LED backlit signage at the main reservations entrance while a giant backlit Ma-harajah – our popular mascot – greets passersby.

The highlight of the makeover is a series of windows aligned towards the main entrance. The windows have been effectively utilised to display various promotional offers, connectivity and other USP of Air India viz. Our Jaldi Jaldi scheme, the Dreamliner, etc. So, over a pe-riod of five decades – the evolution of Airlines House in sync with the changing times – shows the dynam-ic quality inherent in the national carrier’s soul.

the nation proud by bagging the bronze medal in the 10-metre air rifle event.

Kudos to major maintenance deptThe major maintenance division, Kolkata Engineering, took the responsibility of replacing all the three main landing gears of two Airbus 319 aircraft recently. Re-placement of landing gears is a key factor to ensure the aircraft remains in flying fit condition. The aircraft VT-SCD and VT-SCE are amongst the oldest in the A 319 fleet. The original landing gears were removed and fresh landing gears were put on the aircraft so that the planes can keep flying. While VT-SCD was grounded at Kolkata, the major maintenance department was set a target of six days to remove and dispatch the ‘loaned’ gears to avoid heavy financial penalty. The team not only replaced and dispatched the whole set in six work-ing days but the aircraft was made ready to fly as well. This was the first such work undertaken by the team. Subsequently, major checks and gear replacements for VT-SCE was also undertaken successfully. Team-spirit and determination to succeed drove the team to achieve this feat. In fact, the morale was so high that an em-ployee who injured himself during the work wanted to rejoin despite being advised bed rest by doctors. Kudos to the Kolkata team!

Air India's Gagan Narang became the winner of the

first medal for India in the 2012 Olympics held at London when he clinched the Bronze in the 10 metre air rifle event.

This was India's 10th indi-vidual medal in all Olympics. Gagan Narang, an employee of Air India from Hyderabad a two-time world record setter, had earlier won four gold med-als in the 2010 Commonwealth Games and two silver medals in the Guangzhou Asian Games. He was the first Indian to qual-ify for the 2012 Olympics.

Gagan Narang makes AI proud

Air India team was runners up in Hockey India Sr. National

Championship held in Bengaluru from September 23 to October 2. The tournament was played on a league cum knock-out basis.

The AI team consisted of Gur-preet Singh, Adrian D’souza, Ajmer Singh, Prabodh Tirkey, V S Vinaya, A.B.Cheeyanna, Sandeep Singh, Vikram Pillay, Sanjeev Ajmani, Vi-kas Pillay, Vinod Pillay, S Pradhan, Shivendra Singh, Arjun Halappa, Sameer Dad, Birender Lakra, Naveen Sangwan, and Joga Singh.

In the league phase, out of the three matches, AI was able to win two of them with huge margins. In the semi-finals with Karnataka, the AI team was able to overcome a two-goal deficit to win.

The finals between AI and Pun-jab saw both the teams show some excellent combinations, coordina-

tion, speed and skill-based hockey. With the match ending at 1-1 draw, the golden goal rule was applied and here an unfortunate self goal gave Punjab the win.

Arjun Halappa was declared the Best Forward of the tournament and received a Nano Car.

In the MCC Murugappa Hockey Gold Cup held in Chennai from Sep-tember 6-16, the Air India Hockey team were Joint Winners.

Even though the AI team lost its last pool match against IOC, because of good scores in the ear-lier matches, the team qualified for the semi finals. In the semi-finals against ONGC, the AI team won by a single goal.

The finals against IOC saw the Air India team overcome a two-goal deficit to draw level. In the extra-time, due to some misunder-standing between the two umpires and the IOC team, both the teams were declared joint winners. Three AI players – Gurpreet Singh, Best Goal Keeper; Vikas Pillay, Best Mid Fielder ; and Joga Singh, Best For-ward – were selected as outstanding players of the tournament.

The team was well managed by Dhanraj Pillay - Chief Coach, and Vineet Kumar, Manager.
