About Face Practice: Daniele Caradonna “I write entirely to find out what I'm thinking, what I'm looking at, what I see and what it means.” - Joan Didion Description of the practice: This practice is a hybrid of a list making activity and a variation on an “I Am” poem that I was introduced to through Writing Project classes. I have observed that many students often create artwork just to meet the requirements of the project, and when the project is complete they seldom take time to look back on the work they have done. When students take the time to reflect upon their work, they form a deeper appreciation for their accomplishments and their art takes on a deeper personal meaning. This time for reflection is also an opportunity for students to learn how to express their ideas with more eloquence. Students who would normally fall back upon sterile descriptors such as good, nice, and pretty can use technology as a tool to help them discover language that is rich and profound. Steps of the practice: Students will: 1. take a moment to review their artwork. 2. fill in the brainstorming chart with descriptive words that correspond to their artwork. It is acceptable to use technology. *Words we will avoid: smile, happy, sad, mad, scared, nice, mean, pretty, ugly, open, closed, shut, big, small, little, long, short, up, down, normal, okay, crazy, cool 3. create an “I Am” poem about their face changer by completing each line with words from their brainstorming chart. 4. share their work.

Description of the practice: This practice is a hybrid of a list making activity and a variation on an “I Am” poem that I was introduced to through Writing Project classes.

Steps of the practice:Students will:

1. take a moment to review their artwork.2. fill in the brainstorming chart with descriptive words that correspond to

their artwork.
