Evocative and lyrical, the human beings inhabiting Gaffar's world appear in a state of introspection, gently inviting the spectator to be party to their thoughts. The artist's small town background still grips him., inspiring him to delineate the very ordinary lives of these men, women and children rooted in his subconscious. Occasionally, an eloquent verse metamorphoses into a pivotal theme. Relationaships are explored through subtle body language in idylic landscapes of copious trees and flowring shrubs=Mother and child, a young lover promising the moon to his bashful beloved, two adolescents sharing a secret... The dialogue between mand and nature is highlighted by Gaffar's painterly
treatment and rich orchestration of emerrald greens, azures and crimsons.

Almelkar was rooted in the folk art tradition and took his inspiration from Ajanta's mural style. His water colour
works are striking for their depiction of rural life which he portrayed with great feeling . His eye for details, costume and manner gave his art a rich resonance.
He achieved great harmony in expressing folk forms with a modern approach. He took great pains to study Adivasi art and incorporate it in his oeuvre. He used dynamic forms with rhythmic strokes and bright colour schemes in thick impasto which resonated with vibrant energy. His art was very textured and he worked almost obsessively in this idiom.
Among his most famous creations were "Fishermen", "Adivasi" and "Village Road". A large body of his work can be seen in the collection of the National Gallery of Modern Art in Mumbai.
