Editorial

Welcome to our February / March edition of the Talkabout.

We hope everyone had a wonderful New Year and you are all ready for

a brand new start.

This year marks the 10th Anniversary of the opening of the

Innisfail Multi Service Hub.

We are planning an open day event on the 21st March, 2019 to

mark this anniversary.

Keep an eye out for this event as we get closer.

If you would like to donate your 10c refund on containers to the

Community Support Centre Innisfail, we would be very

grateful.

We could use the funds to help add the extras needed

to run the programs and workshops for the

community.

To do so you can tell them the code C10007097

when taking the containers to MAMS at Dickson Rd. This is then put into an

account for us. Many thanks!

SELF-CARE SUGGESTIONS The following self-care activities have been developed and collated to demonstrate the huge variety of activities which you can do to spend time looking after yourself. We hope you enjoy some of these activities and it encourages you to explore the many potential activities you can undertake. There are many self care activities which you can do to look after yourself. Whether it be at times of crisis or just in your daily life. It is important to take care of yourself and participate in activities that make you feel happy, healthy and well.

Here are just a few:

Progressive Muscle Relaxation This is a great technique for reducing overall body tension. As you practice tensing and relaxing all the muscle groups in your body, you can move into a shortened procedure. Here’s how to get started:

1. Find a quite place and sit or lie down and make yourself comfortable. 2. Begin by tensing all the muscles in your face, close your eyes as tight as possible, clench

your teeth even move your ears up and down if you can. Hold this for the count of 8 as you inhale.

3. Now exhale and relax your face completely. Feel the tension seep from your facial muscles and enjoy the feeling.

4. Next completely tense your neck and shoulders, again inhaling and counting to 8. Then exhale and relax.

Continue this procedure all the way down your body repeating the procedure with the following muscle groups: Abdomen, entire right arm, right forearm and hand, right hand, entire left hand, left forearm and hand, left hand, buttocks, entire right leg, lower right leg and foot, right foot, entire left leg, lower left leg and foot, left foot.

Laughter Research has shown that the health benefits of laughter are far-ranging. Laughter can help relieve pain, bring greater happiness and even increase immunity. Positive psychology names the propensity for laughter and sense of humour as one of the 24 main signature strengths one can possess. Laughter is free, convenient and beneficial in so many ways. You can get more laughter into your life with the following: Relax by watching TV and movies, laugh with friends, find humour in your life; there are so many ways you can make yourself happy. It’s the little things.

Develop your logical thinking Sometimes we know immediately what we need to do to fix a problem, but sometimes we get stuck. Here is a structured

approach to use to move along when we feel stuck. Six steps you may use to solve the problem are:

1. Identify and select the problem – what exactly is the problem? 2. Analyse it – why is it the problem? 3. Generate potential solutions – all the ideas you could use to fix it. 4. Select and plan the solution – here is the game plan to put into action. 5. Implement the solution – focus on the tasks you identified and stick to it. 6. Evaluate the solution – didn’t work? Try a different approach.

Structured problem solving skills give shape to thinking and enables you to focus on the problem at hand.

Saying NO is OK Doing everything for everyone else can be a huge stress but how do we rid ourselves of saying “YES’ to everyone and never to ourselves. First, we need to acknowledge that it is OK to say ‘NO’. It does not mean that we don’t care, it means we need to look after ourselves first.

Here are a three ways to get there:

1. List the top 10 things you can say no to. These need to be eliminated from your life.

2. Think of a situation where you need to say “no” and practice it out loud, in front of a mirror! Practice makes perfect!

3. Whenever you are asked to do something, think to yourself “do I really want to do this?” rather than “should I do this?” If the answer is no than let someone else do it.

Cassowary Coast Camera Club Kunobert Schmidt – President

A very warm welcome to the new year of 2019 and to all photography enthusiasts in Innisfail and the Cassowary Coast Region.

Our Monthly meetings are held on the first

Monday of each month in the Meeting Room at CSCI(Community Support Centre Innisfail) at

6:30 pm. Visitors and new members are always

welcome to come along.

The first meeting of the year is on February 4th 2019 which is also the Annual General Meeting - for the election of a new

management committee.

All positions are open.

The members’ photography skills range from beginner to professional and all levels in between.

Mini workshops, power-point presentations and informative discussions on all topics photographic at the meetings keep members actively interested in

their chosen hobby.

At the end of the monthly meeting we usually have a show – and – tell, where members bring in some of their recent photos which are projected

onto the screen for all members to enjoy and maybe, constructively critique. Although this critique may sound denigrating to the photographer, it is in no way so intended; it is designed to aid and assist for future improvement to

their photography. Many images are praise-worthy and do not require critique at all.

Members also have the opportunity to go on monthly outings/field trips to improve their photographic shooting skills. The venues for these are chosen

by the members at a meeting and agreed to by consensus. These events can be combined with picnic lunches so as to make it a social occasion as

well. As a club, we try to make them fun-events for the enjoyment of all.

For further details, please I can be contacted on 40654660 after 7:00 pm.

New Year’s Resolutions So, who started all this craziness?

The Babylonians get the blame. They made promises to their gods at the start of each year that they would return borrowed objects and

pay their debts. They were also the first to hold recorded celebrations in honour of the New Year.

4000 years on, the idea of making new year’s resolutions has entrenched itself in our society. Unlike the Babylonians, however, it

seems we are not very good at keeping them. We are all familiar with the eat healthier, lose weight, exercise more resolution. Which is in fact the most common resolution made in the USA each year. A more worth while resolution might be, Save Lives – Donate Blood, the Red Cross would like more of that. Maybe you are the creative type who

pledges to watch ten movies written or directed by 10 women. Whatever way we choose to go, most resolutions are “out the window” and forgotten by month’s

end. So, we have a good laugh and wait till next year rolls round when we’ll do it all again. If we were serious about the matter, we could try a different approach. Identify the right resolution to improve your life. Start small, keep it

realistic, make sure you own the idea and it is not something a well-meaning friend has imposed on you. More than half of all resolutions fail, yours does not have to be one of them. Create a plan on how to reach it and become a part of the small group of people that successfully achieve

their goal.

Happy New Year!

• 2 cup plain flour

• 1 1/2 cups desiccated coconut

• 2 cups rolled oats

• 1 cup brown sugar

• 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda

• 1 1/2 cups white chocolate chips

• 1/2 cup dried apricot (chopped)

OATY CRISP BISCUITS

• 1/2 cup wholemeal flour

• 1 tsp baking powder

• 1 1/4 cups rolled oats

• 90g butter, cubed

• 2 tbsp honey

• 2/3 cup milk

• 1/2 cup raisins

BANANA BISCUITS

• 3 large ripe bananas, mashed • 125g butter • 1 cup sugar • 1 1/2 cups self-raising flour • 1/2 cup coconut • 1/2 cup rolled oats

1. Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced). Cover 2 baking sheets with baking paper and set aside. Cream the butter and sugar together until pale.

2. Add egg and vanilla and beat well.

3. Add flour and salt and mix well.

4. Roll teaspoonful-sized balls of batter and place on the baking tray 2 fingers apart. Using the end of a wooden spoon make a well in the centre of each ball.

5. Fill each indentation with a quarter of a teaspoon of jam. Bake for 10-15 mins.

1. Line a slice tin with baking paper and set aside. 2. Process the biscuits and melted butter in a food processor until you have fine crumbs. Press into the base of the slice tin and refrigerate while you are making the topping. 3. In the food processor, combine the cream cheese, sugar, vanilla extract, thickened cream and melted chocolate until smooth. 4. Dissolve the gelatine in the hot water and add to the cream cheese mixture and combine well. 5. Pour the mixture over the biscuit base and sprinkle chocolate chips over the top. 6. Refrigerate for 3 hours or overnight. Slice into squares taking care to wipe the knife in between cuts.

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Stir the butter, golden syrup, honey and water in a small saucepan over a low heat for 4-5 minutes or until the butter has melted. 2. Remove from the heat, add the bicarb soda, and stir. The mixture will start to foam up like a bubble bath! Cool for 10 minutes. While you wait, add the flour, coconut, oats, and brown sugar to a large bowl, and stir with big wooden spoon. 3. Once the butter mixture is cool, add to the dry ingredients and mix well and then stir through the chocolate chips and dried apricots. 4. Roll tablespoons of the cookie mixture into balls, place on a tray lined with baking paper and then flatten slightly with the palm of your hand. You might need three big trays because there are a lot of cookies! 5. Transfer the cookies into the oven for 12 minutes or until they turn golden. 6. Once baked, cool the cookies for 10 minutes on the tray before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely ... or eat warm if you can’t wait!

1. Preheat oven to 200 C. Cover a baking tray with baking paper and set aside. 2. In a bowl, sift flour and baking powder and stir through rolled oats. 3. Rub through butter with your fingers until the mix resembles crumbs. Stir in honey, milk and raisins until well combined and chill for 2 hours. 4. Remove from fridge and roll into balls, place on tray and slightly flatten with a fork. 5. Bake for 15- 20 minutes.

1. Preheat oven to 230°C. Line baking tray with baking paper and set aside. 2. Using an electric mixer, cream the butter and sugar. 3. Stir in the bananas until combined. 4. Add the flour, oats and coconut and stir until thoroughly combined. 5. Place teaspoons of the mixture on the baking tray, leaving room for each biscuit to spread. 6. Place in the oven and turn it down to 200°C. 7. Bake for 10 minutes.
