Seven Schools Named Top Schools for Student Voices in Education Technology The OTS Office of eLearning would like to announce that the following Chicago Public Schools have been selected for the NetDay Speak Up 100, America's Top Schools for Student Voices in Education Technology:

Bouchet Elementary Math & Science Academy

Bridge Elementary School

Gray Elementary School

Louis Pasteur Elementary School

Northwest Middle School

Twain Elementary School These schools have been recognized because of the importance they place on including students' ideas in education and technology planning. One hundred schools nationwide were named as Top Schools for Student Voices in Education Technology on March 6 at the Consortium of School Networking's 11th Annual K–12 Conference in Washington, D.C. The list of the 2006 Speak Up 100 schools can be found at http://www.netday.org/news_speakup_100_pr.htm. Net-Day Speak Up is an organization that promotes the effective and appropriate use of science, math, and technology resources in K–12 education, so that every student has the opportunity to fully participate in today’s global economy and community. Congratulations to these schools for their leadership!

Bridge Named In Top 100 Schools Nationwide

Room 214’s Folktales Room 214 has been very busy in the last few weeks writing our own folktales. A folktale is a story made

up and handed down by the common people. It usually explains a phenomenon or how something came to be. We

had to think of many different types of topics to write about. Some ideas included why penguins don’t fly, how

tigers got their stripes, how the Milky Way was formed, and many more. We were inspired to write folktales by a

story we read called Her Seven Brothers, a Native American folktale. The project took us four weeks to com-

plete, but we finally finished the stories, and they turned out just how we wanted them to be. I know that 214

had fun writing their own folktales, so you will probably enjoy reading them, and maybe even writing your own.

Dr. Christopher Brake, Principal Mrs. Margaret Moore-Taylor, Assistant Principal

Dear Parent/Guardian:

This subject of internet “blogs” has received increasing attention in the press, here at Bridge Elementary School and at schools

throughout the country. You might ask, what exactly is a blog? “Blog” is short for Web log. It is an on-line journal or diary. Teen-

agers can create blogs for free on such sites as MySpace.com, Xanga.com, LiveJournal.com and FaceBook.com. Students tend to

use the same service used by friends. Blogs usually include profiles, pictures and personal entries of the person keeping the blog.

Blogs are generally social in nature and are another “place” for teenagers to hang out with friends.

What seems quite benign at first glance can become a problem when a teenager:

Gives out personal information and/or pictures;

Makes inappropriate comments:

Falsely attributes words or pictures to another person;

Posts inappropriate material;

Describes in words or pictures behavior which is illegal such as underage drinking.

The dangers include how this information can easily be obtained by strangers and used for unintended purposes, even to make con-

tact with children. There is clearly a safety issue here. Blogs have also been used in ways which promote poor decision making

about such things as drugs and alcohol as well as in ways which are bullying or threatening to other children.

We are concerned for our students’ safety and well-being. We suggest that you check these websites for information that may be

written by or about your child. This is the surest way to protect your son/daughter from poor decision-making stalkers and the bully-

ing that can happens o easily in cyberspace. There have been several occasions this year in which information from blogs has been

brought to our attention and we have used that information to enforce existing school policies. Bridge has blocked carious “blog

sites” on its network. Two very helpful websites with additional information about blogging and internet safety are:

www.blogsafety.com and www.isafe.org.

Thank you for allowing us to be your partners in the formation of our children and students. Together we will help them be more

aware of the benefits and dangers of the internet and blogging.

Sincerely,

Dr. Christopher Brake

Indirect Calorimetry By Jennifer Lopez room 210

Over the last few months rooms 210 and 212 have been

working hard to answer the question: How can we change

school lunches to better fit our body’s needs? To find the an-

swer, we had to conduct a number of experiments. From burn-

ing tortilla chips to discover calorie content to watching video

clips to discover how oxygen travels to body cells. We are now

close to answering our question. This past week you might

have run into eighth graders running up and down the hallways

wearing a strange contraption on their face. We are now trying

to collect data to find out how much energy we use up from our

energy stores. To do this we have to measure the amount of

oxygen we use up. This is called indirect calorimetry. In a few

days we will have our results and finally have the answer to our

question. I can’t wait to see our results!

The Trojan Horse The “Trojan Horse” was a good play, per-

formed by the sixth grade classes. You could

tell that the sixth graders studied and practiced

hard. To perform this play, the sixth graders

had to learn about the Trojan horse, memorize

their lines, and make their own costumes.

These sixth grade students are an example of

all of the many hardworking students at

Bridge. We should all give a big bulldog

“Thank You” to all of the sixth grade teachers

and students that worked hard on this wonder-

ful play. Written by Jaleesa L Medina, Room 214, Fifth Grade

On Thursday and Friday, April 27th and 28th, Bridge School was treated to a performance

of the play HOSPITAL. HOSPITAL is a comedy about all the crazy things that go on in a

hospital, including some ditzy, loud, hungry, and silly doctors. A lot of the characters

were played by our own 8th grade students, Razan Abuhashish, Mark Gorzkowicz, Mi-

chael Tutka, Brandon Liciandrello, Shantea Cruz, Natalie Ficek, and Kristine Castillio as

part of the stage crew. Thanks to the director, Mrs. Green, the production of HOSPITAL

was a big hit!
