Double and Single Acting
Operation
Double and Single Acting Actuators
Both the double acting and spring return MRP actuators feature a compact design with the sameenvelope dimensions. This flexible unit can be converted from double acting to single acting inthe field without special charts to decipher color codes on which springs to use. The springreturn actuator is available with spring sets from 40 pounds to 80 pounds in 10 poundincrements. The springs are manufactured from heavy gauge wire to assure long life andcorrosion resistance.
Standard Double Acting
To OPEN ValveIn a double acting application, air pressure isintroduced to Port 4, pressurizing the spacebetween the pistons and driving the pistonsout towards the actuator ends. The volume ofair above the piston heads is exhausted toatmosphere. This causes the piston racks todrive the pinion in a counterclockwisedirection, resulting in a quarter-turn rotation.This rotation is transferred to the valve shaft,opening the valve.
To CLOSE ValveAir pressure introduced to Port 2, pressurizingthe spaces above each piston head and drivingthe pistons inward. The volume of air betweenthe pistons is exhausted to atmosphere. Thiscauses the piston racks to drive the pinion in aclockwise direction, resulting in a quarter-turnrotation. This rotation is transferred to the valveshaft, closing the valve.
Spring Return
To OPEN ValveIn a single acting application, air pressure isintroduced to Port 4, pressurizing the spacebetween the pistons and driving the pistonsout towards the actuator ends while at thesame time compressing the springs.
This causes the piston racks to drive thepinion in a counterclockwise direction,resulting in a quarter-turn rotation. Thisrotation is transferred to the valve shaft,opening the valve.
To CLOSE ValveWhen the air pressure is relieved, the springtension moves the pistons inward and exhauststhe air through Port 4. This causes the pistonracks to drive the pinion in a clockwise direction,resulting in a quarter-turn rotation. This rotation istransferred to the valve shaft, closing the valve.

ISO/DIN Valves Shaft Adaptation
The Morin MRP Rack and Pinion actuatoroffers unsurpassed flexibility in mountingoptions. The design provides a commonsense approach to the multiple shaft designsallowed by ISO. The MRP addresses thecomplexity of this standard with a standard ofit’s own and offers a comprehensive range ofadapters to suit many of the ISO “standard”shafts on the market today.
This allows the MRP to be used on differingvalve shaft designs in the same plant withouthaving the same size actuator models withdifferent pinions.
Actuator Mounting pad of the Morin MRP: Thedual-keyed input shaft allows parallel orperpendicular mounting to the valve flow andis designed to accept the desired ISOadapter sleeve. A comprehensive range ofadapter sleeves is available to suit manyvalve stems.

Double and Single Acting
Travel Adjustments
Within the mechanical connections of the drive between the valve and the MRP actuator there areseveral points of manufacturing tolerance, including valve disc or ball to stem, stem to adapterand adapter to actuator that must be compensated for in the operation of the assembly.Therefore, adjustment is necessary to ensure that valve operation is as precise as required. Withthe MRP, Dual travel stops allow adjustment at both ends of the stroke. Maximum adjustmentrange of 82° to 98° rotation, including an over travel of +/-4° and an under travel of +/-4°.

Resilient seated butterfly valvesShut-off occurs before the disc has rotated afull 90° from the open position. Traveladjustment is therefore desirable to preventover travel, which would result inunnecessary operating torque and prematuredeterioration of seat life. In the open position,adjustment is necessary to ensure maximumflow through the valve and minimum dynamicforces acting on the disc.
High performance butterfly valvesThe double offset design of high performancebutterfly valves results in the disc moving intothe seat with a camming action. It is importantthat the disc does not travel beyond the seatposition, otherwise damage to the seat willoccur.
Ball and Plug valvesThe ball or plug must be precisely in line withthe valve port to prevent damage to the seatin the open position.
Adjustment at the closed position isnecessary to ensure that complete shut-off isachieved. MRP actuators have over traveladjustment of 4° +/- one degree and undertravel adjustment of at least 4°, making themideally suited for all quarter turn valvedesigns.

8Optional Special Nickel Protection (SNP)
For those harsh environments where even ourtough, standard electrostatic powder coatingcan be overcome, MRP offers the option ofSpecial Nickel Protection. Used in difficultservices including caustic wash downs infood and beverage operations, salt airenvironments in coastal regions, highhumidity zones such as cooling towers, andmany others, this option provides some of thehighest levels of protection obtainable inpneumatic rack and pinion actuators. TheMRP with SNP is protected by the nickelprocess both inside and out, including thepinion, using a proprietary chemical process.
Double Acting ModelsUsing the chart opposite, selectthe actuator, which will provide thenearest torque output above theanticipated torque of the valve (+ safety factor).
Spring Return ModelsDetermine the desired ‘failuremode’ (fail open or fail closed),then determine the critical torquepoints for the subject valve usingthe table below. Using the chartopposite, select the appropriateSpring Rating (far right columns),according to the air supplypressure. Select the actuatorwhich will provide the nearesttorque output (both ‘start’ and ‘endof spring’) above the anticipatedvalve torque (+ safety factor).
