In the PYP, the Unit of In-

quiry is a sort of driving force

for the entire course of the

academic year that sets the

context of learning for all

other subjects as well. These

units are constructed meticu-

lously and comprehensively

around six trans-disciplinary

themes of global significance,

providing a framework of

exploration and study.

These themes are:

Who we are

Where we are in place

and time

How we express our-

selves

How the world works

How we organize our-

selves

Sharing the planet

Every grade studies six UOIs,

each lasting for an average of

six weeks, that fall under each

of these six themes, thereby

creating a vertical and horizon-

tal alignment across all the

grades.

These themes are trans-

disciplinary because students

are taught all other subjects

(English, Math, 2nd/3rd lan-

guage, Sports, Art, Music etc.)

in as close a link as possible to

the theme currently being in-

quired into.

Unit of Inquiry thus becomes a

fine blend of the social scienc-

es, arts and science creating a

certain academic atmosphere

for six weeks that maximizes

learning of the subject (and

therefore the theme), allow-

ing the child to gain a deeper

understanding than other-

wise possible.

In these few weeks, activities

are planned pertaining to the

themes and subjects that will

help them acquire skills of

inquiry and research.

Activities such as quizzes,

project work, power point

presentations, guest lec-

tures, skits and many more

are planned to make their

learning both effective and

fun.

Discussion on their own personality types

Grade 5 students learnt about different People’s

behaviour patterns and the ways they project their

identities. They read various case studies on differ-

ent personalities and compared their behaviour

using T Charts.

They took an online and offline survey to find out

about their own multiple intelligences and personal-

ity trait.

Math

Using manipulatives to record their findings

Using different colours to compare quantities

In maths, concepts of fractions and decimals was

covered where students learnt about addition sub-

traction , multiplication and division of fractions and

mixed numbers. They learnt that decimals are an-

other way to represent fractions.

The concept of Ratio was also introduced using

manipulatives.

English

Learning a Poem

Recount writing was introduced as an integrated

activity with English to get familiarised with autobi-

ographies of different personalities. They also read

different autobiographies in the class.

Poems were introduced as a standalone topic

where students used different Graphic organisers

to structure and learn poems.

To integrate further students were introduced to

descriptive writing and its features.

Students using manipulatives to learn Division

To understand the concept that Division means

sharing in equal groups, the children took manipula-

tives and made equal groups. They proceeded into

adding symbols and making division sentences out

of the groups they were representing. Some chil-

dren also placed the manipulatives as per the divi-

sion sentence given to them.

This activity was followed by a discussion of key

words on a mind map.

English

Guided Reading session in class Silent reading in class

“Today a reader, tomorrow a Leader”

Grade 3 children have taken to reading with much

gusto. Very often, reading is followed by various

interesting tasks (rather than the usual question

and answer comprehension) which enables to

check the comprehension levels of the children and

to make them develop an interest in deep reading.

As a class, guided reading is a favourite activity

which also focuses on phonics when necessary.

Sometimes children read aloud to their peers and

at other times they enjoy a silent reading session.

After weeks of practice, Grade 3 showcased their

Love and Support for animals by a wonderful dis-

play of Drama, and Dance on “World Animal Day”.

The script for the play was developed by the stu-

dents as part of their routine drama class. Choos-

ing to personally be a part of the script rather than

being told what to do exhibited the attribute of

true PYP students.

Subtraction problems. The students enjoy working

out problems on the whiteboard and with various

math games which leads to better understanding

and caters to the multiple intelligences of the stu-

dents. Math addition and subtraction word prob-

lems are challenging and a story format is used to

help students understand them. Beads and other

manipulatives are regularly used to improve the

understanding of the students.

Food production chain From farm to table

“Food comes from the grocery store, of course!”

At least that’s what my students always told me at

the beginning of our unit. Children understood the

process involved in making a food product and the

human made systems by which it is supplied to the

consumers. Using many strategies like ‘See, Think,

Wonder’ , ‘Think, Pair and Share’ in the class to

study about the functions of these human made

systems created a spark in children to wonder

about the food production chain. Exploring differ-

ent food products and hands on experience of

making some recipes created an enthusiastic

atmosphere in the class.

Math

Using the Place Value Mats Arranging beads to count ones and tens

While all the numbers have a place, they also have

a value. The value of a number is based on the

place the digit is in. Using the place value mats

helped the students to understand the concept of

place value. In pairs, they chose different numbers

and arranged the beads to find the place value of

the chosen number by doing activities like “Place a

pile of them on a table and show that it is easier

to count them in groups of ten.” “ First make

groups of ten, then count the ten-groups and the

individual beads separately. Say, "I have five ten-

groups on the table and four individual beads."

English

Keep cool and drink lemonade Can’t catch me I’m the gingerbread man

Descriptive writing : Capturing an event

through descriptive writing involves paying close

attention to the details by using all of your five

senses. Grade 1 has been making different food

products in class. Popcorn, gingerbread man cook-

ies, lemonade and sandwiches are some of the reci-

pes that the students enjoyed making in class. They

followed step-by-step instructions to complete the

recipe which also helped them to learn procedural

writing.

Halloween

It’s all just a bunch of hocus pocus!

To celebrate Halloween, students came dressed up

in fancy costumes and collected many candies as

part of “trick or treat”. With lots of enthusiasm

they participated in decorating the classroom. We

had a Spectacular story time watching the story of

Mr Froggy and Peppa Pig celebrating Halloween.

“A toothy grin is always fun, why not end it up with

carving a Halloween pumpkin”, students had the

carved pumpkin displayed in the class.

Diwali celebrations

‘The festival of lights’

The celebration of Diwali ,'The festival of lights'

came alive when everyone wore festive outfits to

school. During the assembly, students divulged the

essence of the festival by dancing on the tune of

‘Sri Ram Stuthi’. Besides sensitizing students to the

ill-effects of crackers, they shared the guidelines on

how to be safe while bursting them. Colouring the

Diwali cards added the perfect setting to the festiv-

ities.

Creating the food corner

Food corner

Grade 1 has created a food corner in the class-

room to display different varieties of food prod-

ucts. This corner gave a lot of space for inquiry as

students became curious to know where these

food products come from and how they are

grown? How the companies make so many packets

and give it to the supermarkets?

As a part of inquiry, the process of germination

was shown to the students by putting fenugreek

seeds in a tray and some vegetables in water pots

to see the roots growing.
