Catholic Campaign for Human Development
The second collection next weekend Nov 17 and 18
will be taken for the Catholic Campaign for Human
Development which was founded 40 years ago by the
bishops of the United States when they realized that
the lives of those in need would not improve until the
systems and policies that keep people in poverty were
changed. For 40 years , CCHD has funded many
community groups that seek justice and create lasting
change. Fight poverty in America. Defend human
dignity. Give to the CCHD Collection.

and for the last twelve very involved in multiple family ministries.

the same opportunities to experience a strong, spiritual parish
community.” Elizabeth and Billy Burden

Parish social ministry Sr. Christine Sammons, O.P., 731-6074
St. Vincent de Paul:
Our staff and volunteers are hoping that the worst of
Hurricane Sandy is just a memory and that everyone is
safe and sound. We continue our prayers for those who
have lost so much of what matters to them! So many
are extremely grateful that through our pantry we have
been able to provide food and other necessities during
this terrible crisis. As a result, our basic needs remain:
Paper goods: towels, tissues, toilet tissue, napkins Toiletries of all kinds Laundry and dish detergent Pampers and wipes for our babies
Cereal (hot and cold) Peanut butter and jelly
Canned meat and fish (tuna) Chef Boy-ar-dee pastas Hearty and regular soups Pasta, macaroni and cheese
Tomato sauces, canned tomato products Rice, beans, potatoes Canned vegetables and fruit Dessert mixes (Jell-o, pudding, cake, icing, muffins,
brownies, etc.)
As always, please remember to
“Buy one, get one free!” Many thanks!
Please remember the poor boxes~~your donation helps us
help our visitors with the basic needs of daily life~~like a
bed, oil, electricity, medicine, a roof over their heads. Hur-
ricane Sandy has made us conscious of life without these
necessities!
Thanksgiving~~How You Can Help!
We are in the process of sending letters of invitation to
our visitors to the pantry to participate in our Thanks-
giving gift-giving. We are offering our families a few
options:
1. A traditional American Thanksgiving basket with
turkey OR
2. An Hispanic Thanksgiving basket with ham OR
3. A $25 supermarket gift card OR
4. A Thanksgiving meal prepared and delivered by
Runyon’s, Seaford OR
5. A Thanksgiving meal prepared and delivered by
Miller’s Ale House, Levittown.
Please call our office if you would like to participate in
this Thanksgiving endeavor of sharing with our low-
income neighbors. You can choose to:
Prepare a basket for a particular family (we will
let you know the number in household and sug-
gested items) OR
Donate $25 toward a supermarket gift card (we
will purchase cards in advance for you to pro-
vide—this worked very well last year!) OR
Donate a turkey or a certificate for a turkey.
It would be very helpful if we could hear from you
Monday, November 12th so we have a sense of how this
endeavor is coming together. We plan to serve approxi-
mately 125 families so your help would be most wel-
come! Thanks in advance!
The Heart of Christmas:

Monday, November 12. As a young man, Saint
Josaphat (1580-1623) was excited about the possibility
of the Orthodox metropolitan city of Kiev, comprising Belarussians and Ukrainians, reuniting with the Church of Rome. When he was elected Archbishop of Polotsk, Lithuania, he worked tirelessly to continue the efforts to bring the Orthodox communities of Kiev in full communion with the Catholic Church. Many people were strongly opposed to this reunion. His commitment to ecumenical relations was eventually realized in the Byzantine Rite of Catholicism. Saint Josaphat, the martyr, is the first Eastern saint to be formally canonized.
Tuesday, November 13. Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini was the first American citizen to be canonized. Born in Italy, she studied to be a teacher and wanted to join a religious community but was rejected because of ill health. When the orphanage she managed closed in 1880, Frances and six others took religious vows and founded the institute of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Her work brought her to the attention of Leo XIII, who sent her to New York in 1889 to minister to Italian immigrants. She founded institutions all over the United States of America, as well as in South America and Europe. She died in Chicago in 1917.
Friday, November 16. Saint Margaret of Scotland
(1045-1093), the wife of King Malcolm III of Scotland, managed to raise eight children while promoting Church reform, especially in the area of liturgical practice. As a woman of great faith, she founded and restored monasteries, provided hospitality to pilgrims, spoke out on behalf of the falsely accused, and fed the poor from her own dining table. All of her charitable activity was grounded in a strong prayer life.
Saturday, November 17. Saint Elizabeth of Hungary (1207-1231), the Queen of Hungary and mother of four children, had a special love for the downtrodden. She built a hospital in the basement of her castle, nursed the
sick, fed the hungry, and provided life-giving work for the poor. After the death of her husband, she took the habit of a Franciscan tertiary (Third Order Franciscan), devoting herself of a life of simplicity and almsgiving. Saint Elizabeth is the patron saint of Franciscan tertiaries, bakers, beggars, brides, the homeless, and charities.

Saints of the Week
THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME November 11, 2012
S ometimes we find ourselves surrounded by people who do
things only that will further their success. Often, we ourselves
do things just so others will think highly of us. But in today’s
liturgy Jesus warns against vanity, and he praises the humility
of the poor woman who, from her poverty, offers her whole live-
lihood to God in sincerity rather than vainglory like the scribes
and Pharisees.
First Reading: The widow’s powerlessness in her pov-
erty had reached its ultimate limit. Only death re-
mained. She nonetheless gave the last crumbs of what
she had to live on, with total trust in the word of the
man of God that God would provide. Her trust was not
mistaken.
Responsorial Psalm 146: Today’s response of praise
highlights the Lord’s special care for the poor and pow-
erless – our response - Praise the Lord, my soul.
Second Reading: the Letter to the Hebrews points to the
ultimate realities: the heavenly temple of God and the
reality of the now, the present time, as the end of time
already begun and moving toward its final consumma-
tion when Jesus comes again to gift his faithful ones
with the salvation he has accomplished.
Gospel: Like the widow in the First Reading, the
widow in today’s Gospel gave from her substance, from
what she had to live on. Meager as it was, it was worth
more in the eyes of God than all the sizeable donations
of those who did not suffer as she would for her gener-
osity. Literally, the Greek reads: “She gave her whole
life.” Is this not what Jesus would later do?
