Several years ago, I found an old collection of Christmas carols on the I nternet, originally p ublishedin the l ate s, called Christmas Carols, New and Old , the m usic ed ited by S ir J ohn Stainer and the

words by Henrey Ramsden Bramley. book through Lulu.com, and I e njoyed some o f its more o bscure ca rols enough that I t hought Imight combine t hem into a s ingle vo lume con taining C hristmas carols from several different sources.

So in early , I set about creating su a b ook by s imply t aking p ages f rom several old collectionsof Christmas music a nd combining t hem into a s ingle vol ume. I thought briey o f taking t he t roubleof m aking n ew engravings of all the m usic, but i t s eemed an enormous t ask: though I had used a

program called Lilyd would take many days o

I h ad this c ollection ready (an d in its third edition, the rst ed ition having b een merely a dra, andthe second edition laing Gaudete ) i n time for C hristmas , but a er giving a f ew away asChristmas gi s, I d ecided that t he book in its cur rent f orm was n ot ideal, and worthwhileimprovements could be made by m aking new engravings of all the music. us, I have taken thetrouble o f transcribing ev erything i nto Lilypond for t his new edition. In this way, I have also beenable t o add nearly more s ongs t o the col lection, including a h andful of A dvent hymns and twosongs, Ring Out Wild Bells and Auld Lang Syne , in celebration of the n ew year, whi always begins a

week aer Christmas. To make instead of Lulu, and in hopes that others m ay al so nd it us eful, I have m ade i t available f or pu raseon Amazon.com, where i t should be easier to nd.

In selecting th e s ongs, I have t ried to include al l the p ublic d omain carols that are w ell-known, as wellas those whi I have found appealing. Some songs I sought out specically, and others I had never

heard before nding them in older c ollections while p reparing the p resent vo lume, having lookedthrough several su books, including The Cowley Carol Book ( ), The Cambridge Carol Book(), the af orementioned Christmas Carols, New and Old ( ), as w ell as t he sever al Christmascarols f ound in Favorite Songs and Hymns for School and Home ( ). In a f ew cases I have sl ightlyedited the m usic f rom the s ource ar rangement, and in rarer cases I have s lightly m odied the t ext. I n

In ordering t he s ongs, I have a ttempted to interleave the m ore well-known songs with those t endingfurther toward obscurity. However, the ob scure ca rols seemed to outnumber those I expect to be

well-known, whi led to entirely o f carols of relative o bscurity. is is followed by a h andful of carols of foreign origin, whiare f ollowed by a few more car ols a nd part s ongs. However, these s ections a re r ather nebulous a ndsongs may occas ionally s eem out of place w ithin the b ook.

In laying out t he music, I h ave tried to avoid setting lyrics f or ad ditional verses t oo far b elow themusic itself, because of t he difficulty involved in continually glancing ba and forth between themusic and the words. us, some songs have t he exact same m usic pri nted several times, sometimes

with a orus also doubled.

In a f ew cases I have i ncluded the o riginal foreign-language words as well as an English translation,but i n other c ases t his was i mpossible, for Bramley and Stainer, while noting whi texts weretranslations, were n ot so thoughtful as to include t he names o f the o riginal texts, and I hav e o nly b eenable t o nd the source t exts for a f ew of them. ere a re al so a f ew foreign-language ca rols for whiI have n ot included any E nglish translation.
