The NSW Government’s ‘Art of Ageing’ photographic ex- hibition comes to Twin Towns from 13 to 24 February to coincide with the 2019 NSW Seniors Festival, formerly known as NSW Seniors Week.

Featuring war veterans to proud L-platers, sports enthusiasts, artists and refugees, the exhibition com- prises thirty images taken by five talented photographers from regional NSW.

Each image will be pro-jected onto the giant 17

metre by five metre screen on the exterior of the Twin Towns building.

The exhibition celebrates the value, experience and contribution older people bring to our communities and proves older people are anything but clichéd.

It reminds us that older people are not all the same and everyone’s experience of ageing is unique.

Member for Tweed Geoff Provest said the exhibition demonstrates the diversity and experiences of older

Spend Australia Day 2019 at the coolest spot on the Tweed.

Oasis Pools at Club Banora will hold their annual Pool Party on Saturday 26 January, so round up a group of family or friends and get together to celebrate how lucky we are to live in this great country.

Pack the fold-up chairs, the picnic rug and beach towels and relax by the pool while the kids enjoy a swim and play on the giant inflatables (weather permitting).

Australia Day party would not be complete without the traditional Aussie BBQ. Oasis Pools has it covered and the BBQ will be sizzling in true Aussie style with steaks, snags, bacon and egg burgers and more available for purchase.

The Oasis Pools Australia Day Pool Party is always a popular event for local families so plan to arrive early to grab your favourite spot.

The pool opens from 7am NSW and the Pool Party takes place between 11am and 5pm NSW. Admission is $4.50 for Twin Towns members ($5 for non-members) and $4 per child.

Oasis Pools is also open for the public holiday on Monday 28 January from 7am to 4pm NSW.

Australia Day Pool Party Twin Towns and ACE Community Colleges are offering a free course to help seniors unlock the mystery of smart phones, iPads and tablets, learn how to shop and bank online, and engage with family and friends via social media and skype.

Delivered in partnership with the NSW Government and Telstra, Tech Savvy Seniors provides free training to help older people learn to make the most of the digital world.

The Tech Savvy Seniors program proves age is no barrier to learning about the online world, with one graduate and Twin Towns member, Harry Birkin, completing the course just a few days shy of 100 years young.

Training modules in each five-week course include an introduction to the internet, cyber safety, social media and online shopping.

Robyn Keenan from ACE Com-

munity Colleges said the course is aimed at beginners and no experience is necessary.

“We hope our Tech Savvy Seniors course helps take away the fear and shows seniors just how easy new technology is to use and how it can improve their lives.

“Our participants will learn to communicate via email and we’ll also show them how to set up a facebook account and use it to communicate with family and friends.”

Each Tech Savvy Senior course runs for five weeks and all classes are held in the ANZAC Room at Twin Towns. Courses are available during March, April and May and bookings are essential.

These courses are extremely popular and will fill quickly so register now to avoid missing out. Call Maria at ACE Community Colleges on 07 5520 3026 to discuss the dates book your spot.

Happy New Year

On behalf of Twin Towns Board of Directors, management and staff, I wish all members a happy and prosperous 2019.

We look forward to a year of reinvigorating facilities, stream-lining services and continuing our financial assistance to the invaluable local community or-ganisations and junior sporting clubs that need a helping hand.

Members and our local community are the character and backbone of Twin Towns, and without their support and enthusiasm, we would just be ‘another Club’.

Our internal sporting and social clubs are integral members of the Twin Towns family. So many individual personalities

pour passion and commitment into their sub-clubs to create camaraderie, sportsmanship and friendship for all to enjoy.

Twin Towns is pleased to provide the tools they need - a golf course, Olympic pool, tennis courts, bowls greens, meeting space and more - to ensure the best possible facilities are available to every member.

If you are not a member of this great Club, make 2019 the year you join.

My message may be brief this month, but it comes with my sincerest wishes to one and all that this will be a year of good health, happiness and success.

I look forward to catching up around our Clubs and Resorts.

FEATURED CLUB

Twin Towns Seniors Social ClubIn 2019, Twin Towns Seniors Social Club begins its 37th year with more planned coach trips to near and far and fun, friendship and camaraderie for all our members.

From February to November, the Seniors Social Club has two trips each month, on the first and fourth Monday. There are also two extended trips during the year and a Christmas luncheon in December.

Day coach trips are reasonably priced at $35, including morning tea and a two-course lunch. All day trips commence at 7.30am Qld.

Day trips start from Tweed City with a few stops along the Gold Coast Highway to Miami when travelling north and leave from Miami when travelling south. Extended trips leave from Twin Towns.

Trips coming up in 2019 include a day trip to Beenleigh Artisan Distillery on 4 February; a mystery trip on 25 February; a day trip to Brisbane on 4 March; and a Mount Tamborine Coffee Plantation tour on 25 March.

We are currently exploring some possible destinations for extended trips this year, such as Lightning Ridge and the Fraser Coast based at Hervey Bay. If we cannot get these destinations for the dates we have in mind, we have some other options we can investigate.

The Seniors hold their meetings in Visions on the Mantra side of Twin Towns on the third Monday of the month. All tickets for trips are sold at the meetings.

New members are always welcome! Membership forms are available from the Membership desk in the main foyer at Twin Towns.

Phone calls Tuesday to Friday

10am to 4pm. To enquire about

membership, contact Del on 07

5534 4756. The Seniors Club Tour

and Social Organiser is Dot on 07

So far, the forties have been a decade of achievement for Twin Towns electrician, Lachlan Elliott.

He’s come a long way over the past four years. He started working on irrigation at Club Banora’s golf course before joining the Twin Towns Maintenance Department. Despite his age, Lachlan was quick to put his hand up when an apprenticeship became available.

Lachlan recently passed his Capstone theory and practical exams to become a fully qualified electrician at 46.

The apprenticeship entailed one day of study each week, as well as four days working at the Clubs.

The fourth and final year was spent working under the watchful eye of Twin Towns Head Electrician Phil Dwyer.

Phil said he admires the determi-nation and effort Lachlan has put in to complete his studies and achieve what he set out to do.

“Both Lachlan and our other mature age apprentice, Brad Lang, do an exceptional job.

“It is great that Twin Towns can offer these opportunities that are quite often only open to school leavers,” said Phil.

If you spot Lachlan’s happy face when he’s working around the Club, be sure to say gidday and congratulate him on completing his studies.

Newly qualified electrical tradesman, Lachlan Elliott.

Capstone milestone for Lachy

Feel like something is missing in your life? Maybe it’s that wave of joy that sweeps over you when you hear a really great pop song.

Well, come February, you’re in luck because FIVE + S CLUB 3 + Big Brovaz will bring the fun time party vibes to Twin Towns with their 2019 Poptastic Tour.

The 90’s were the decade of boybands. One of the biggest boybands and for many, their absolute favourites, were the hit machines known as FIVE (or 5IVE).

They changed the way we looked at boybands – they didn’t wear matching outfits or sit on stools. They released a series of great pop songs including Keep On Movin’, If Ya Getting Down, Everybody Get Up, When the Lights Go Out, Got The Feelin’, We will Rock You and Slam Dunk, to name a few.

S CLUB 3 (Jo, Tina and Brad) will perform all their biggest singalong hits including Bring It All Back, Don’t Stop Movin’, Reach, Two in a Million, Never Had a Dream Come True and of course S Club Party.

But wait, there's more! BIG BROVAZ will also join FIVE and S CLUB 3 for this massive event in the Showroom. BIG BROVAZ had one of the biggest selling singles in Australia in 2002 with Nu

Flow, followed up by Favourite Things and Baby Boy.

Plus, the one and only Levins joins this ultimate party as DJ and host for the night.

Twin Towns Showroom, Friday 15 February, 8pm Qld; tickets $70. Call 1800 014 014, go to www.twintowns.com.au or book on the Twin Towns app.

Show and Stay Packages are available from $392 for two people. Call Mantra Twin Towns direct on 1800 19 20 20.

Members Money, the most popular members only cash promotion ever, is BACK! From February through to April, members will again have the chance to win $5,000 or more every week.

With the old Members Badge Draws at Twin Towns, chances of your membership number being drawn were around 40,000+ to one. With Members Money, the odds are determined by the number of entries in the barrel. So, better odds and more chances to win the cash.

To enter, a cumulative spend of $10 on a qualifying purchase (food and beverage at the nominated monthly club venue) will give you a ticket in the draw.

The draws alternate each month between the three Clubs – Twin Towns, Juniors and Club Banora. The first Members Money draws will take place in February at Twin Towns.

Be at Twin Towns on Thursday 7, 14, 21 and 28 February at 6.30pm Qld (that’s 7.30pm NSW) and you might go home with $5,000 in your pocket.

If the Members Money isn’t claimed, it will jackpot by $5,000 each week until the cash is won. If the final week’s prize is not claimed, a second chance draw will take place.

At the second chance draw, ten individual entries will be drawn from the barrel and each member has four minutes to claim their place in the second chance draw. If they’re not present, the draw will continue until 10 members who are present are drawn from the barrel.

If the second chance is activated in the final week, hold onto your entries when you make a purchase and put them in the barrel before the draw on the last Thursday of the month.

MASTERS SWIMMING

Where has the year gone? No doubt it is because we are a great club with lots of ‘social’ outings as well as competing. I must mention how great it is to have Andrew as our coach. He is keeping us on the ball and correcting lots of bad habits, especially our turns where we lose time when competing. Paul Mayberry represented our Club at the Northside Carnival and did exceptionally well in his five races achieving 3 gold and 2 bronze. Congratulations. Sue and David live in Limerick Avenue so hold the ‘Limerick Cup’ on Melbourne Cup day, holding races with each riding a hobby horse. Much fun and laughter. Janet was the winner after three races. We all take a plate and Dave Maynard is the bookie taking bets on other races. A real fun day! Last Birthday morning for the year was a real feast and Santa sack time was enjoyed by all. Thanks to Sue and Barb for buying all the presents and wrapping them - quite a job! Happy 2019 everyone.

SNOOKER

What a great year we have had. The culmination of our year was the Presentation Night held on 8 December at Club Banora which was supported by approximately 50 members and their guests. A great social night had by all. The year just passed saw two new initiatives undertaken. Firstly, the Club’s first junior coaching program since 2009 was well attended over a period of 9 weeks. Secondly, the Maximum Handicap start (20) competitions on a Wednesday commenced in October with good numbers. During 2018, the Club maintained all its competitions, visits and representations as in the past and these were well supported by members. The 2019 Calendar will be forwarded to members soon. A visit by Casino RSM Snooker Club is scheduled in January which is a first. Wishing all members a very happy and healthy 2019.

MENS BOWLS

I hope everyone had a nice Christmas and you are ready for bowls again. From accounts expressed to me, the Christmas break up dinner was a great success and enjoyed by all. With the New Year upon us it is time to think about elections for the AGM. I am sure there are some eager and talented people out there, so I am only too willing to propose or second your nomination. By the way, the AGM will be held in March which is not that far away. Wednesday morning social bowls has proven to be very popular and prior to Christmas, morning fields were outnumbering the afternoon fields. Welcome to the new members who have taken advantage of the Club’s Social Membership deal. Ross O’Leary has been busy once again and thank you to our Sponsors who have come on board again, including a new sponsor, The Skin Care Clinic. Welcome. Make sure you support them when you can. See you on the green.

GARDEN CLUB

Wishing a Happy New Year to all our readers. Quote: Where but in a garden do summer hours pass so quickly (unknown). That’s because we can just sit and look in our hot time of year; hold up an empty picture frame and see your garden as an oil painting. Here’s a great tip for January, prune euphorbias such as poinsettia and snowflake shrubs for an increase in flowers as each cut produces two new stems. Another tip: pot up a herb garden; basil, chives, coriander, dill, mint, parsley, sage, tarragon and thyme. These herbs all do well in pots. Garden Club diary runs from April to March being produced right after the AGM and newly elected committee. Members consider taking a turn on the committee, be ready to put up your hand for nomination. Next meeting is 5 February at 9.45am. All enquiries to President Maria on 0448 531 055. Visitors welcome.

EUCHRE & 500 CLUB

Our games are held upstairs at Twin Towns Juniors which is located on the corner of Leisure and Fraser Drives, Banora Point. 500 is held on Tuesday nights and Euchre on Thursday nights with both commencing at 7pm NSW. The winner of 500 for the month of November was Tom Ohlschlager with Sheila Leiper 2nd and Jo Hortle 3rd.  Any new residents to the area and holiday makers are quite welcome to come

along and join our happy group of players. If you would like to brush up your skills, please come along 15 minutes before our starting time to have a few practice hands. The fees to play are $3 members and $4 non-members and there are prizes for placegetters as well as a Lucky Door prize on each card night. For further information, please contact Pat Lesina on 07 5534 6188.

LADIES BOWLS

Our Presentation Day, spon- sored by B Well Physio-therapy, was enjoyed by all. Championship and competition winners and runners-up received their glittering trophies, and we

acknowledged three of our members: Maud Tate, Dorothy Howell and Bev Coleman for outstanding Club service. Maud and Dorothy reached their 15 years of service, and Bev her 10 years. Ladies such as these have kept the TTSLBC functioning as a strong and successful bowls club. The inaugural winner of the Player of the Year Prize, a privately donated award based on attendance and win/loss points, was a delighted and surprised Robyn Ralston. President Julie Johnston wishes everyone a healthy, peaceful and Happy New Year, and looks forward to seeing you all back at the Banora greens when we resume social bowling on Tuesday 15 January. Our first special day will be Australia Day Bowls on Friday 25 January.

GOLF

Happy New Year golfers. The long-anticipated rule changes to speed up play are now competition rules. Please check the local notice board for the ruling on how to play your ball going out of bounds. Some circumstances allow a two strokes penalty and the opportunity to play the ball from where it crossed out of bounds. Congratulations to our Veterans Tony Waller and Merv Evans who won the 2018 Northern Rivers Veterans 4 Ball Championship and also to our Ladies for their outstanding effort to win the Boomerang Shield away at Mullumbimby. Terrific way to finish 2018. At the end of this month, nominations are called for President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer and also notices of motion for the Golf Club AGM on 16 March. Good golfing to all in 2019.

President Ken

TRIATHLON

We are now halfway through our racing calendar and have continued to see strong numbers coming along each week. We are open every Saturday during the holiday period and are always keen to see visitors coming along. We have a dedicated team that will escort those people around the bike course if needed to save getting lost. We will celebrate Australia Day with our once a year Joe Kelly Memorial Teams Event. Joe Kelly, a former member, was tragically killed whilst participating in an event in Brisbane where he was hit by a falling tree branch. This event brings out the best in everybody, with costumes, a few pranks and friendly rivalry.

Twin Towns has a range of sporting and social clubs. Join today, get out and about, exercise, make new friends or try something new and exciting.

What are you doing today?

BRIAN CADD & RUSSELL MORRISFRIDAY 25 JANUARY

Karise Eden’s voice can move a nation.

The young singer who grew up on the Central Coast of NSW began singing blues and rock from an early age. She began playing guitar at 13 and also picked up the double bass.

After busking and playing community festivals around her home town, Karise shot to fame in 2012 at just 19 years of age, winning the first series of The Voice Australia.

Her debut album My Journey shot straight to number one on the national ARIA Chart, was certified double platinum and went on to become the biggest selling album by an Australian artist in 2012.

Karise made ARIA Chart history in the same year, taking out the top three spots on the singles chart with #1 Stay With Me Baby, #2 with her breathtaking cover of Hallelujah and #3 I Was Your Girl. Her single You Won’t Let Me was #5. She became the first artist since the Beatles to have four songs in the top five in just one week.

Karise’s second album Things I’ve Done charted at #6 on the ARIA Chart, achieved gold sales status and was followed up by a sell-out Australian tour.

Karise’s influences vary from blues through to bluegrass, rock and soul: Janis Joplin,

Jimi Hendrix, Guns ‘n’ Roses, Doc Watson, Joan Baez, Deep Purple, Etta James, Robert Cray, Joss Stone.

She might sing a Janis Joplin song in a powerful husky voice, followed by a beautiful Joan Baez song next, but her songwriting is always emotionally driven original material.

In 2018, Karise Eden released her third album starting with the first single Temporary Lovers.

In her Twin Towns show, Karise will perform soul classics she is known and loved for, plus a couple of original tracks from her new album Born To Fight.

At 26 years of age, Karise says she is the fittest she’s ever been, and is reaping the rewards.

“Since working out and developing on my core strength, my high notes are stronger and my lower register is thicker and richer.”

Prepare to be mesmerised by one of Australia’s best soul and blues voices when Karise performs in the Twin Towns Showroom on Friday 22 February, 8pm Qld time. Tickets are $40 plus booking fee.

Call 1800 014 014, go to www.twintowns.com.au or book on the Twin Towns app.
