The theme of this year's Week of Prayer is "Reconciliation-The Love of Christ Compels Us." 2017 marks 400 years since the Reformation. Therefore, the week of prayer has two accents: on the one hand, a celebration of God's love and grace, and on the other hand, the pain of deep divisions which afflicted the Church and an opportunity to take steps toward reconciliation. The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity has a history of over 100 years, in which Christians around the world have taken part in an octave of prayer for visible Christian unity. By annually observing the WPCU, Christians move toward the fulfillment of Jesus' prayer at the Last Supper "that they all may be one." (cf. Michigan Opera Theatre’s first cellist, Nadine Deleury, violinist Velda Kelly and harpist, Patricia Terry Ross are giving a special concert as a Community Outreach Program; also performing is well-known Brazilian-born pianist, Maria Meirelles (who helped with her concerts at Orchestra Hall, to save and establish this wonderful venue for Detroit). In addition, award-winning saxophone player, Christopher Sacco will perform music by Saint Saens, Bizet and more modern composers, with collaborative pianist, Kathryn Goodson from the University of Michigan. To conclude the event, gifted 12- year-old Tuesday Musicale Student Leaguer, flutist, Ian Plansker, accompanied at the piano by his teacher, Sharon Sparrow, (Assistant Principal Flutist with the DSO), will play the charming Waltz from Suite de Trois Morceaux by Benjamin Godard. This will be an extraordinary concert with some of the most prestigious musicians in our area. Music from Handel to Prokofieff will be heard. The concert is free to the public. Candidates and their sponsors will be asking for your prayers and support. Please pray for them. On Monday, January 30, from 6:30-8:00 there will be a Confirmation student and sponsor/parent meeting in the social hall.

To Parents of Students for First Holy Communion and Confirmation: We would like you to locate your child’s Baptismal Candle so we can use them for our ceremonies. Also, if you could locate a picture of your child’s Baptism we would love to make a collage with them. Please label the back of the picture with child’s name and family name, and bring it to the religious education office. Children’s Religious Education: Sunday family began last week and Monday classes begin this week, Monday, January 23. FAITH FORMATION: • Monday Morning beginning January 30. The Wild Goose: This is a series dealing with different experiences of the Holy Spirit

and hopefully awakening in our hearts God’s love and transforming power. Come journey with the Wild Goose starting Monday, January 30 at 9:00AM in the St. Clare Whittier Room. There is no cost for this program. For additional information, contact Rosemary Campbell at 313-549-0433 or [email protected]

• Monday evening beginning January 23. Alpha. Alpha is a series of sessions exploring the Christian faith. Each talk looks at a different question around faith and is designed to create conversation. All are welcome. This program will be held in the St. Clare Teacher’s Lounge from 6:30-8:00, PM.

• Thursday evenings beginning January 26. Two different ten-week programs on Catholicism and Sacraments. Join us at 6:30 for dinner (free will offering ($5-7). The program will begin at 7:10. Catholicism by Bishop Barron: Journey around the world and deep into the Faith. For the first time, in breathtaking, high-definition cinematography, the beauty, goodness, and truth of the Catholic Faith are illustrated in a rich, multimedia experience. Journey with acclaimed author, speaker and theologian Bishop Robert Barron to more than fifty locations throughout fifteen countries. Be illuminated by the spiritual and artistic treasures of this global culture that claims more than one billion of the earth’s people. From the sacred lands of Israel to the beating heart of Uganda ... from the glorious shrines of Italy, France, and Spain, to the streets of Mexico, Kolkata, and New York City, the fullness of Catholicism is revealed. Journey deep into the Faith as you watch each episode. Sacraments by Edward Sri: In the Catholic Church, there are seven sacraments that are part of a Christian’s spiritual life from birth to death. They are signs of grace instituted by Christ to give his diving life to us through the work of the Holy Spirit. But what are these sacraments? Why are they necessary for a relationship with Jesus? And how do the sacraments affect our lives on a daily basis? This course will delve into the sacraments and refresh our understanding of them. Friday mornings, 9:00. Continuation of the Epic Journey through the Bible. These sessions are held in the Whittier room. SUMMER BIBLE SCHOOL/CAMP: If you love children and you love your faith, perhaps you could think about assisting with the summer bible camp here at St. Clare. There will be a meeting on Monday evening, February 1 at 6:45 in the religious education office. If you have any questions or if you cannot attend this meeting and would like to help, please see, email or call Sr. Kathy: [email protected].

the Mass. Sunday is the St. Clare open house from 2:00-4:00. If you are interested in the school, or just curious or want to reminisce please stop by.

• Monday is spirit day. Students will show their St. Clare spirit. • Tuesday, we have student appreciation day. There will be an assembly, popcorn and other ways to show our appreciation to our students. We will also have the induction of new members to our chapter of the National Junior Honors Society.

• Wednesday is Mass and the special person breakfast afterwards. Our students will be able to invite a special person to attend Mass and have breakfast with them. The cost is $5 per guest.

• Thursday is our community service day. Throughout the year our students do community outreach to various organizations. Some include making Christmas cards for the residents of the St. Joseph Convalescence home, some classrooms have made cards for our parishioners who are shut-ins. This is also the day when the NJHS goes to Mass at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament for the Catholic Schools Week Mass. This year the Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Cepeda.

• Friday is teacher appreciation day. Our parents volunteer to transform the Social Hall into a beautiful dining experience for our teachers. Other parents volunteer in the classroom so the teachers can enjoy their lunch and have a little extra time.

Thank you for the support you all have shown St. Clare school over the past year. It is much appreciated. Have a great week! Geoff Fisher I Principal

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTS Third Sunday in Ordinary Time In today’s Gospel passage, St. Matthew reflects on Isaiah’s prophesy in the First Reading: The people who walk in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shone. This foreshadows what is accomplished in Christ Jesus. In the Old Testament, the “land of gloom” is where Israel’s trail to Babylonian captivity began. In this same area, in the fishing village of Capernaum, Jesus begins His public ministry and calls the first Apostles. As Christian stewards, we know that Jesus is our joy and the “Light of the World” Who dispels darkness. We are called to a personal relationship with the Lord and, in turn, are commissioned in a spirit of evangelization to share Jesus’ joy and light with all of our brothers and sisters. Many parishes evangelize through processes like Alpha and ChristLife, which give you an opportunity to draw closer to Christ while professing His Good News of salvation to others.
